Overall, EBS is a very good school with a solid program and a strong learning environment.
However, I feel that the amount of memorization required is above what I would consider reasonable, which can take away from the enjoyment of a course that could otherwise be more engaging and fun.
I also believe that flair training, while valuable and very much in trend, should be optional. It requires a specific set of skills, and for students who may struggle with grip or fine motor coordination, it demands a level of practice that the school may not realistically be able to provide within the course timeframe. Offering it as an optional certification track would allow students to choose based on their abilities and interests.
I had a great time at EBS Amsterdam. The course itself is very informational, and there is a lot of practical training, all you need to be a great bartender!! The instructors were very helpful, kind, and patient, which definitely helped me successfully complete the course. I highly recommend EBS Amsterdam to anyone looking to up their bartending skills.
I came into this course with basically no bartending knowledge, and have found this to be an all-round uplifting experience. Both the facilities and the instructors were excellent, and we learnt a huge amount of information in an environment that was fast-paced and very supportive. I really appreciated being pushed beyond what I knew, both academically and practically, and I’ve learnt so so much. If you’re a person who wants to do an intensive course, this is definitely your top-pick: you’re not only taught extremely well, but you’re surrounded by instructors and people who are top in their field, and are clearly passionate about this. I can’t speak for every month, but I found that we were surrounded by amazing people doing flair after school, Tom Dyer himself helping us when he was around, and lots of direction to bars in London that we could learn from just by visiting and observing. Everyone’s been friendly, outgoing and at the heart of it all, have been really kind, and for someone who was so nervous to push myself out of my comfort zone, I have found this course deeply worthwhile. As someone who doesn’t consider themself to be particularly athletic, like with flair, I couldn’t believe that by the end of the month I was able to execute two flair routines really pretty well.
Small notes: in terms of the practical bar theory, I would have found it more helpful if we could dedicate more time to that side of the course, even with all the other segments of the course, as I think it helps cement the recipes in your head more practically, but also is just more useful in terms of real world knowledge.
Knowing so much more about alcohol in general, the history, culture and context, has been massively helpful in terms of just understanding its role in the world. Going out into the world with this, I would definitely recommend it, whether you get a job from it or not - it’s a valuable experience, SO much fun, and full of trips, experiences and moments that extend beyond the course. Money well spent.
Shout out to Jay! Thank you for picking up our course so incredibly well, and I wish you all the best.
