Happiness at Work - mentoring I worked together with István at Verizon Smart Communities HU Ltd. for nearly 10 years. During this time he organized numerous events, even outside of working hours, that supported team cohesion. One such initiative was the "Happiness at Work" group mentoring program between 2022 and 2023, which he designed based on an international course he had completed, and which he also led as a mentor. The series of discussions ran for a year, with one online meeting per month and about 10 participants. We talked through various topics and workplace situations together and most of the time we were also given homework, such as filling out tests, exercises and meditation. István led and accompanied these discussions with a coaching approach, using guiding questions and they were always spent in a good atmosphere. In addition, István shared some personal experiences and insights and we learned a lot from both his and each other's contributions. I'm glad that I took part in this program, as it helped develop my self-awareness. The feedback I received shed light on some of my blind spots, as well as prompted me to reflect on my work and career. My relationships with my colleagues also improved as a result — I began initiating conversations more boldly, more often, and with more people. I also improved in actively listening to others. It further showed me that I should dare to express my feelings and thoughts more courageously and be more open toward others. I believe that developing these soft skills had a positive effect not only on our workplace relationships, but we also benefited from them in our private lives.

More Than Just a Manager I met István at my previous workplace, where he was my manager. He was deeply respected by the whole team for his outstanding people skills and the genuine effort he invested in each of us, both individually and as a group. I’m particularly grateful for the initiatives he started, such as the happiness workshop, and the growth opportunities he created through well-thought-out professional development courses. Participation was always optional, but no one ever regretted giving their own time after hours. Through his support, I was able to expand my skill set significantly, such as picking up procurement processes and realizing I could quickly master technical areas outside my original qualifications. This gave a huge boost to my self-confidence, making it much smoother for me to adapt and succeed in my next career steps. Throughout our long-term working relationship, István proved to be an exceptional mentor, first offering guidance and sharing his own experiences, then helping me find my own solutions through insightful questions. I would welcome the chance to work with him again in the future in any capacity, and I highly recommend him as a mentor and coach to anyone looking to grow personally and professionally.

Istvan Juhasz - mentor experience I first met István Juhász in 2018, when I was working at Verizon as a student. I still remember presenting the results of one of my projects to him and his team. They gave me very positive feedback, which eventually led to me joining István's team, where I spent nearly six years. Over those years, as one of István's mentees, I learned an incredible amount about myself, about work, and about how to confidently grow and move forward in my career—or even how to find my own voice. István had a unique way of asking thought-provoking, sometimes even provocative questions that helped me uncover ideas and insights I would probably never have reached on my own. My favorite quote from him is something I still carry with me today and try to apply in every aspect of my life: "You can't change your environment; you can only change yourself." I am truly grateful for six years of mentorship and for the meaningful conversations we continue to have to this day. Thank you, István!

Years of learning and positive impact I had the privilege of working with István for nine years, and I truly feel that his leadership by example and his guidance had an immensely positive impact on both my professional development and the way I approach problems. I originally joined the team he was leading, and from the very beginning I felt that I was receiving support not only in completing the tasks at hand, but also in understanding how I could continue to grow and advance my career in the future. A great example of this is that everyone from our team at the time went on to make significant progress professionally. Every one of my former teammates eventually led teams of their own and achieved the career milestones they had been aiming for. So this is not just my personal experience—it was something I consistently observed across the entire team. Even in situations that seemed completely hopeless, István never gave up. With remarkable determination, he would patiently revisit the same lessons, sometimes for years, until we finally understood them. I learned a tremendous amount from him about approaching problems constructively. István not only has an exceptional ability to understand complex situations, but also to teach the mindset required to stop focusing on limitations and instead recognize opportunities. He consistently demonstrated this attitude during team meetings, and when a one-on-one conversation was needed, he never held back—he always did everything he could to make sure the message got across. Through his own experiences and examples, I gained valuable insight into how the environment we work in really functions, which meant I didn't have to learn every lesson the hard way myself. It was a genuine mentor–mentee relationship, and over the years I benefited greatly from his consistent guidance in an encouraging and positive atmosphere. Thanks in no small part to his support, I grew from a Technical Support position into a confident DevOps Engineer. Beyond the professional side, whenever I faced personal difficulties, he always made sure to offer a few supportive words and listened with genuine empathy. I am especially grateful for that, because he cared not only about the technical aspects of the job, but also about creating a workplace where people were treated with kindness and respect. What I valued most was that he never approached these conversations in a generic or superficial way. The Sessions I Didn't Know I Needed István is a truly outstanding mentor, and I mean this literally. He is easily one of the most influential people I have had the chance to work with during my time as his mentee. I can still recall most of my conversations with István, which in itself is a testament to how meaningful they were. He offered me great guidance, meaningful challenges, and an environment where I could grow and learn far more effectively than I would have without his mentorship. His approach to mentoring helped me immensely over the course of three years at Verizon. While training to become a Scrum Master, (a role I had no previous exposure to) he guided me through most of the hurdles by sharing his own experiences and insights in challenging situations. In the early stages, he would often tell me how he would approach a similar problem, which gave me a strong foundation to build on. As I grew more comfortable in the role, his approach shifted. Rather than offering direct advice, he began asking me thoughtful questions that helped me figure out for myself how I wanted to tackle a specific challenge. That shift felt natural and empowering. Later, when I transitioned back to software development, we continued our sessions, though the focus broadened beyond work-specific topics. Our conversations touched on personal growth, navigating life outside of work, and at times even deeper reflections on how we observe and make sense of the world. These were some of the most valuable discussions I have had with him. Every session had meaning, even if I only felt it a week later, or even when I did not agree at the time, I would eventually find myself feeling clearer, more grounded, and more capable. From manager to mentor I had the privilege of being mentored by István during the years we worked together at Verizon, where he was my manager and mentor. What started as a normal working relationship quickly grew into a long-term mentoring: we had one-on-one sessions every week, consistently and over a long period, and he took real ownership of my development both professionally and personally. Our conversations focused mostly on people and stakeholder management, both internal and external. Handling suppliers, partner companies, and internal IT were the biggest areas where, as an IT administrator and procurement specialist, I ran into plenty of tricky, real-world situations. István rarely just handed me the answer; instead, he guided me with questions, helping me reach my own solutions rather than simply providing a ready answer. He also helped me to believe I am more capable than I thought. He also shared a lot of his own experience along the way, and I learned a lot from these. What I valued most was how he pushed me (always in a constructive way) a little outside my comfort zone. I came out of that period noticeably stronger, both in my soft skills and professionally. Great mentoring István is one of those exceptional leads who also takes on the role of mentor, someone who changes fundamentally how you think, always leaves you something to sit with, and takes genuine care of his mentees and employees, not solely focusing on the product. Our mentorship spanned a significant period of time, with regular conversations that followed my growth and the challenges that came with it. His interdisciplinary background in engineering gave him a rigor and a philosophy that left a lasting lesson for me as a developer. He would share stories from his own studies, how different the expectations were, how demanding, and why that discipline mattered. Code should be held to the same standards as hardware, where failure isn't just a minor inconvenience but a matter of system-level collapse, which introduces a very real human risk on everything being worked on. That philosophy stuck with me throughout my career. Beyond the technical, he genuinely invested in the wellbeing of his team, sharing resources, recommending courses, and making sure that happiness at work wasn't an afterthought. What sets him apart is everything beyond the technical. He's the rare manager who will name the thing everyone else doesn't dare bring up. Not to stir conflict, but because he'd rather solve a real problem than tiptoe around a fake one. That same directness applies to his feedback. István has a way of cutting through the surface-level explanations you've convinced yourself of and helping you see what's actually going on. And it goes both ways, he genuinely wants to hear how you, as a junior, would approach a problem, and takes the time to help you refine that thinking rather than just handing you the answer. I came into his mentorship notoriously quiet and afraid of authority. The conversations were honest and direct, sometimes challenging, but always safe — I never felt judged, only pushed. Occasionally it was also a little intimidating how well he could read a situation, or read me, but looking back, that was exactly the point. He pushed for that actively, without making it feel like a project, just enough pressure, applied the right way. He also kept tabs on his team the way leaders should. He always emphasised consistent check-ins, genuine availability, and real investment in whether the environment was working for people, not just whether the work was getting done. I'm currently working as an AI research intern at a major company, in exactly the kind of position I had been working toward for a long time. István is the kind of person you don't forget. What stays with you isn't the bar he sets, it's how much he wanted you to clear it.

Mentorship That Shaped My Professional Journey István was my manager for more than four years, and during this time he played a defining role in my professional development—not only as a leader, but as a true mentor. I joined an AI development company with a background in the humanities and teaching, which was a completely new field for me, so it was especially important to have someone I could always turn to. István was open to my questions in every situation, he listened, and he provided guidance on how to approach and handle new and often challenging situations. He generously shared his extensive professional and personal experience with me; these conversations were not only useful but genuinely inspiring. He was always supportive, regardless of whether I approached him with a work-related or personal matter. During our work together, there were occasions when we did not fully agree; however, these situations were always handled constructively. István consistently listened to my perspective and, drawing on his own experience, offered advice that helped us find the best possible solution together. I received regular feedback from him every six months, but these were much more than formal evaluations—they were real mentoring conversations. There was always time to discuss topics in depth, even outside of working hours when needed. Our conversations were honest, open, and free of judgment, creating a safe environment where I felt I could speak freely and trust his guidance. Whenever necessary, he dedicated hours to supporting me—the longest of our one-on-one conversations lasted three hours. Sometimes we explored a single issue in depth, such as handling challenging interpersonal situations at work; other times, we covered multiple topics in an effort to find common ground and move forward effectively. I always felt that he truly listened and genuinely cared about helping me. Over the years, while the mentor–mentee roles remained, our relationship gradually evolved into a more collaborative partnership. My experience Over the years, István acted as a mentor to me both professionally and personally. We had regular conversations across a longer period of time, and as his mentee, I felt genuinely supported during these discussions. From a professional perspective, he encouraged me to step outside of my comfort zone and take on more responsibility and leadership roles, even though I did not think I had it in me due to my anxiety, but he saw the potential in me and prompted me to tear down my own self-imposed boundaries. He also helped me think through and develop in different topics such as interviewing candidates, professional development, taking additional education opportunities and leadership roles. What I appreciated most was that he did not simply tell me what to do — especially over time, he increasingly helped me find my own answers through thoughtful questions and nudging me into different directions that I hadn't even considered before. Beyond work, István also supported me during difficult periods in my personal life. He regularly checked in on me, listened to me and offered help and perspective, and openly shared his own experiences and challenges. As time went on, these talks gave me courage and confidence to carve my own path and Istvan's guiding role more and more changed into one of a solicitous listener. Learning and growing Working with István began at the end of 2021, when my student position became a half-time role. At the time, I was also completing my teaching internship at a high school, writing my thesis, and preparing my teaching portfolio. Needless to say, I was under a lot of pressure, and István quickly noticed my tendency to take on too much at once. Even though we barely knew each other, he helped me realize that it was completely normal to feel exhausted, because no one should have to carry that much responsibility alone. He supported me the way a mentor supports a mentee. We had several one-on-one conversations, each of which he always started with a question. He listened patiently to what I had to say, then reflected on it by sharing what he saw from the outside - both in me and in the situation itself. To be honest, at first I found some of his questions too intense, because I often felt that we were approaching the problem from completely different angles, or that he could not fully see what I was going through. However, over time, I came to understand why he approached things that way - at that point in my life, that was exactly what I needed. Through thoughtful questions, he guided me toward looking at my circumstances and emotions from different perspectives and helped me understand that it is not the end of the world if something does not turn out exactly the way I wanted it to. During these conversations, he often shared personal stories as well, explaining what he had learned from them or what he would have done differently. Over time, I noticed that even before he asked any questions, I had already started approaching situations from multiple perspectives on my own during my monologues - something he would always listen to attentively, with genuine care and unwavering focus.

It was my first position in an enterprise corporate environment, so at the beginning I was a little uncertain about what to expect. Even during the selection process, István encouraged me to step outside my comfort zone, which already showed the kind of leader and mentor he was. During the four years we worked together, I could always turn to him with questions, challenges, or for advice — both as my manager and as my mentor.
