“The Pilgrims Table” offers is a model for interpersonal relationships When I first learned about the Camino de Santiago I had just been named pastor of my very first parish (I am a late-vocation Catholic priest.). I was intrigued with the thought of walking the Way of St. James, but chose to wait a few years. Then life happened: I grew old, got bad knees, and a neuro-muscular disease that permanently derailed any plans for making the pilgrimage. But that hasn’t stopped me from reading everything I can about the Camino. Until I read “The Pilgrims’ Table” everything I read was more about the process and the places of the Camino, viewed from perspective of the author. Kevin Donahue gives the reader a story about the people on the Camino. It’s a snapshot of one moment in time on the pilgrimage. It’s a story about a diverse group of individuals, each walking for their own reason, who meet as strangers. During the course of their brief time together we get to know them. We experience their joys, their sorrows, their challenges, similar to the people we met in that wonderful movie, “The Way.” What I take away from this novel is simply this: when you share your life stories with me, I am enriched. When I share my life stories with you, hopefully you, too, will be blessed. I thoroughly enjoyed “The Pilgrim’s Table” and I anxiously await Kevin Donohue’s next book.

The kind of book you don’t want to end! A beautiful, heartfelt and ultimately hopeful book. I highly recommend it - not just to anyone who has dreamed of walking the Camino, but to anyone who has ever wondered whether it is too late to take a new path. I couldn’t put it down.

It's not the steps - but the love at the end that makes your camino The author takes the focus off the walking and onto the meal at the end of the walk - a fascinating premise that works out well. An evocative book that leaves you steeped in the world of the camino, and pilgrims, via a single meal.

An outstanding Camino novel The Pilgrim’s Table is a novel that weaves together beautiful writing, vivid characters, a sense of place, and an engrossing story. If you have walked a Camino, you will recognize and relate to the pilgrims and their personal struggles and how coming together can be so healing. If you haven’t this is a realistic picture of what the Camino is like and how it becomes such an important part of people’s lives. I found the story and characters riveting and I eagerly await the next book in this series. Highly recommended.

Pull Up a Chair at Chez Mer Caminos are in my daydreams and have been for a few years. As a full-time traveler myself, I'm drawn to stories about people on their adventure, in the many ways people adventure. The Pilgrim's Table follows five pilgrims who arrive at Chez Mer, a guesthouse in Muxía, Spain, at the end of their Camino de Santiago journeys.Kevin writes in a way that had me feeling the ocean breeze, catching aromas from the kitchen, and remembering what it's like to be drenched in a rainstorm. Each character carries a different reason for walking - grief, recovery, reinvention, searching - and joining them as they share one transformative evening together was peaceful and comfortable. I loved the real-life, messy details of each pilgrim's story, and the host's thoughtful care for his guests - a gourmet comfort meal, a garden to relax in, the thoughtful details throughout his home.I recommend this book for travelers, for those who need time alone to process life, for anyone planning a trip to Europe, for walkers (long-distance or otherwise), and for those in service of others. I read it much faster than I normally read. That's how compelling it was.

An intriguing read depicting the spiritual power of The Camino. An intriguing read depicting the spiritual power of The Camino. A very enjoyable Camino de Santiago read. Interesting characters coming together in the spiritually strong village of Muxia at the end of The Camino. An intriguing premise with the 5 diverse pilgrims connecting around Matthieu’s dining table with the power of The Camino and the spirit of the group facilitating powerful changes in each one. Looking forward to their continuing stories.

Reflections on The Pilgrim’s Table I went into The Pilgrim’s Table not entirely sure what to expect, but it ended up being one of those quieter books that stays with you. It’s really about the people and the conversations that unfold along the way, and what surfaces when you finally slow down enough to pay attention. The story is shared across six people, each with their own backstory and perspective. What makes it work is how their paths come together. It starts to feel like they were all meant to meet, each bringing something the others needed. The conversations feel natural, but they shift something deeper for each of them. One of my favorite lines comes from Matthieu: “The difference is that they have decided to walk until the weight changes.” That really captures the tone of the book. It’s not about quick answers, it’s about staying with something long enough for it to evolve.Isabelle resonated with me the most. There’s something about how she processes things that felt especially real and grounded, and her perspective stayed with me after I finished. At times the journey blurs together a bit, but overall it adds to the reflective feel. It’s less about where they’re going and more about what happens along the way, and who you share that space with. Quiet, thoughtful, and easy to recommend.
