If I could give negative stars, I would. Went to see him with my sister, who has used him for several years with confidence— she recommended him in fact. At my second apt, without my sister, and with my husband, he handed me a sheet to fill out with questions. I had written that a prescription hadn’t gone through so I called the office for them to call it in again and again it didn’t go through. In the question that asked how he could help with paperwork/ insurance/ etc. I said I was just waiting for insurance confirmation for an mri that I hadn’t gotten yet. A few minutes later he barged into the room, didn’t look at us and yelled “these accusations just aren’t true” the he handed me his phone and said, “talk to my office manager pearl, leave the phone in the room when you’re done.” Pearl was unhelpful. I was crying while relaying the story and told her I felt uncomfortable. Why hadn’t he just addressed the issues with his patient— especially if it were some kind of mix up? She said he was rude because HIS feelings were hurt bc he cares so much? Shouldn’t he put his patients first? WEIRD, unethical and bad bedside. Next someone brought the phone back in with pearl on it again where we talked a bit more about our concerns but stated we still wanted to meet with him to discuss my last procedure and clear the air.
I mouthed to my hubs “if she’s the manager why isn’t she in this room?” Her side of the phone was put on mute and when she talked again she apologized by saying she was out of the office at the moment? Was there surveillance where she saw me ask my husband that?? WEIRD! I think he is ill and has severe paranoia so I wouldn’t doubt it. Or on drugs?
We were then essentially asked to leave and escorted out of the office— never seeing him again. Although I did nothing wrong but answer his questions, I was mortified!!! The saddest part is that he had given me hope for a future without pain. I would NOT recommend this doctor. Certainly not if you’re driving three hours to see him.
**EDIT** The prescription in question was called in An hour before my visit yet pearl insisted it was 6/5. I called my pharmacy to check it out, it was only called in this morning but the pharmacy thought it was strange that it was predated, by hand, as 6/5. Lying creep! Then he tried to gaslight me? Forget this guy!
I was then harassed with calls and texts, asking for them to pay me for my six hours of time wasted driving to NYC. When I refused, which maybe I shouldn't have! I was threatened with a lawsuit. I wish I reported him for real (this an update as I noticed my review was removed).
He has his computer screen on in the exam room with all his patients names and meds listed, hippa violation. Will be reporting!!! I have pictures to prove all of this.
Dr. Schottenstein is board certified in pain management and neurology. He genuinely cares about the well being of all his patients, and the care factor is a big plus for me. He is, by far, the best doctor I have ever seen. He has also, without a doubt, set the bar for patient care. I most highly recommend him. A well earned and well deserved five star doctor!

I been going to doctor Schottensten since 2013 I think he's one the best doctor out here in NYC I l love him so much he knows who I am by name not many doctor know that but all and all the best ever and until this day June 5 2026I'm still with doctor Schottensten I love this man I just love this doctor there no other like him again this one of the best doctor i know ❤️ when I'm in a lot pain he takes care of me right always ❤️

I have been dealing with chronic pain for almost a year. It has been a journey seeing different doctors and trying all sorts of conservative treatments. I am shocked to see the bad reviews and wonder what happened to them during their experience because that is not the experience I have had so far. I have only had 2 appointments with Dr. Schottenstein so I will provide my initial thoughts in this reivew. Many other doctors are beyond difficult to reach or even contact, tough to get in an emergency appointment. Not with Dr. Schottenstein. I like that it's easy to reach his staff and communicate and they always make sure Dr. Schottenstein receives my message. In addition, he provides his cell number and I have on several ocassions now texted him with any issues I have been experiencing and he has responded with in an hour or 2. My texts are never not responded to same day. From the first appointment, YES, he is a bit frantic, I felt that but not in a bad way at all. I think he has his quirks but he is the first doctor to explain to me what all the other doctors never did with me and provided me with all options available to me with a plan B in place in case plan A fails. When I experienced side effects this week he was able to see me very quickly and addressed my issues right away. I can tell he is very knowledgeable and confident at everything he does and says. Time will tell if I end up getting much better but I am hanging on and hoping this is the key to my pain. Yeah, his office is empty. He has no staff ay the reception desk but that means he is hands on with his patients and takes care of them from the moment they walk in, no time wasted and ensures he reviews the patients records thoroughly before seeing them.

Dr Schottenstein has been an outstanding pain management doctor for me over the last two years with knee pain and Meniscus Tears, lower and upper back pain and pain due to profound sleep loss and deprivation, even severe dry eye pain. He is always an accessible, ready-to help, full of good humor without which the patient pain is worse. He has made excellent referrals to other doctors when needed and endeavors to practice as a first class medical professional. He also has a deep insight into advocating with health insurance companies to cover all recommended procedures and medicines he advises.

I am a retired Emergency Medicine physician practicing for over 30 years. I was an associate clinical professor and department director of a level 1 Trauma center and Pediatric ED. My connections and colleagues were over an hour away. I am so glad I found Dr. Douglas Schottenstien and NY Spine Medicine
I suffered a severely painful L C7-T1 C8 nerve root compression. I was able to diagnose it and manage it myself for a week or two but it soon became unbearable weeks later. Access to care barriers such as specialist scheduling, limitations of MRI forced me to the ER with minimal and disappointing care. With motor weakness beginning I needed to get relief beyond oral steroids in the form of ESI epidural steroid injections. I found NY Spine Medicine.
Dr. Schottenstien proved to be a highly efficient competent and hard working physician that truly cares for his patients. Not only through attentive bedside manner with a communication style that invites the patients input so he know your exact concerns, but also by action.
By that I mean he, not some staff personnel, comes out into the waiting room to see how patients are doing. He, not some staff, makes sure patients quickly get into exam rooms all while communicating with his optimistic high energy style. He, not some staff, came to me with paperwork explaining the logistics and practical details you just don’t want to deal with on your own without the doctor explaining them to you. Especially when your in 8-9 out of 10 pain. His exam was thoroughly competent and focused. He arranged an MRI the very next day. Quicker than ALL the other sites, offices and hospitals I’d seen.
When I return after the MRI he reviewed it and all options including doing nothing. At that point a spine surgeon had finally become available. He graciously supported my decision to see the surgeon first and return right after if the surgeon agreed that ESI would not interfere with any surgical intervention plans they wanted. The spine surgeon concurred that PT had a high degree of success if made tolerable by ESI. I texted Dr. Schottenstien and he immediately arranged a time slot within a couple of hours. After obligatory consent he quickly preformed a surprisingly painless Epidural Steroid Injection. I was immediately relieved. He reviewed the confirmation images of the steroid disbursal pattern and discussed discharge and follow up details.
I still have a long way to go with PT but am reassured that I’ve a competent accessible physician boarded in Neurology and Interventional Pain management with the professionalism. I absolutely recommend him with highest regard.
