On a single-phase residential AC system, there is no line polarity to reverse in the way described — single-phase AC motors are not polarity-sensitive, and no such change would damage a Carrier condenser fan. On our first visit, our technician diagnosed and replaced two failed capacitors on an aging system — a standard, appropriate first step that gave the older unit more life without pushing an expensive replacement on you before it was actually needed. When the unit failed again weeks later, we honestly recommended full replacement because that was the right call for a system that had reached the end of its service life.

A note for anyone reading this: when it comes to major home systems, be cautious about diagnosing your own equipment using AI chatbots or general online searches — these tools often produce confident-sounding answers that don’t reflect how the equipment actually works. And when you shop for a second opinion, look for a contractor whose recommendation is grounded in what your system actually needs, not one whose story simply confirms what you already believe. That’s how homeowners end up spending thousands more than they had to.
