I Got My Life Back In 2024, completely out of the blue, I suffered a brainstem hemorrhage. I was fortunate to recover quickly in many respects, including my mobility, but I was left with complex double vision both vertical and torsional which became by far the most disability and persistent consequence of my illness. It affected almost every aspect of my life. Working, driving, walking, sitting around a table, being in meetings or simply looking around a room could be difficult. I had always been a very active and independent person, and although I had recovered remarkably well physically, my vision was preventing me from returning fully to the life I had before. The remarkable thing is that I wasn't looking for a surgeon. I had come to believe that my double vision was simply a neurological consequence of the hemorrhage and something I would have to learn to live with. Through Jacky, my orthoptist in Iceland, my case was discussed with Nadeem, who luckily for me is a Visiting Consultant Squint Surgeon to Iceland Health Authority, that eventually led to my first consultation with him. From our first meeting, I felt I was in exceptionally capable hands. My case was complex and he never overpromised. Before my first operation, he explained very clearly what he believed he could improve, what he could not guarantee, and what the limitations might be. The first surgery successfully addressed the torsional component of my double vision, but a vertical deviation remained. With the second surgery, Nadeem was realistic about what he hoped to achieve rather than promising me a perfect result. The outcome has changed my life. My eyes are now aligned, I no longer need prism, and I am back to driving, hiking, working and living normally again. After more than two years, in which my vision occupied such a large part of my thoughts and dictated so much of what I could and couldn't do, I finally feel that I have my life back. Throughout this entire journey, Nadeem's communication has been exceptional. Before and after both operations he was approachable, responsive and genuinely interested in how I was doing. It has always been clear to me that he cares deeply about his patients and about the difference the treatment makes to their lives. I will always be incredibly grateful to Nadeem and to Jacky for bringing us together when I didn't even know that this kind of help might be possible. Meeting Nadeem changed the course of my recovery, and I cannot thank him enough.

So after 25 years of being diagnosed with vertical double vision, and wearing glasses with prism, I discovered I could have an operation to rectify it. I’m 56 and it was getting progressively worse every year. I did my research and found mr Ali, a specialist surgeon in the field of squint and double vision. It was a game changer and has changed my life. I had 7 prisms in my glasses. I booked the appointment, was assessed and met Mr Ali the same day. I felt listened to and heard. I discovered that rather than being clumsy over the years and having a number of falls and broken bones, double vision had affected my depth perception as well. Within 2 weeks I was booked in for surgery and the following day I had single vision, unbelievable! Healing went well but after 4-6 weeks the double vision came back. It was something that did happen, I was an exception. Mr Ali and the delightful Kelly McKenzie from Moorfields assessed me again and provided stick on prisms because I was struggling with my sight. Mr Ali, unphased recommended further eye muscle surgery on the same eye. Again it was within 2 weeks. Now 10 weeks post surgery I’m still single vision. I would recommend him 100 times over, he is amazing and top in his field. Mr Ali and his team thank you! Top team! I’m so grateful to trust what I see thank you

First I want to tell that Mr. Ali did an excellent job with my right eay. The result was exactly as he explained to me at the first appointment. But that is something that was expected from a surgeon of such reputation. What really impressed me and for which I am very grateful is his warm and kind approach towards me as a patient from abroad. The team at London Squint Clinic were fantastic - really personable, efficient and professional throughout. My journey ended up requiring two operations, the second to fine-tune the alignment, and I was really pleased with the final outcome. Mr Ali is a highly skilled surgeon - a magician in many ways - but also very personable and reassuring. I’m amazed that, despite seeing so many patients, he manages to maintain such a high level of care. If you’re thinking about it, my advice would be not to put it off and to book with Mr Ali when you can.

I had visited Dr Ali last year about my squint. I've had a diversional squint from birth and although it wasn't something others said was noticeable, I noticed it. I noticed it whenever I looked in the mirror. I noticed it when I didn't feel confident making eye-contact. I noticed it when people would look over their shoulder trying to work out who I was talking to. In school, I got bullied because of it and later in life it became an increasing insecurity of mine - I didn't like my picture taking and I didn't like meeting new people because I was always thinking about what others would think especially in the workplace or at job interviews. I eventually reached a point where I wanted to do something about it. I first went to the NHS however the issues with the waiting list and I started to consider going private. I did some research online and out of many options, Dr Ali looked to be the best in his field. When I visited him for the first time he was understanding with all these issues and concerns that come from myself and many patients. Dr Ali was also able to meet me online to answer questions I had after my visit. He answered them and it put a lot of my nerves at rest. For my squint in particular, I had a risk of double vision upon correction and so he couldn't promise he'd be able to get them 100% straight because of this but would do the best he could. He really did. I got less headaches now. I can now feel confident making eye-contact. I no longer get people looking over their shoulder trying to work out who I was talking to. I no longer feel afraid of my image if a picture needed to be taken. I feel confident meeting new people. People close to me who knew I was getting this surgery couldn't believe the miracle Dr Ali performed. There is truly nothing to fear and I'd like to thank the Dr Ali and the team that work at the London Squint Clinic for all they have done for me.

Mr Ali fixed my squint in 2019 and everything you described prior to surgery about feeling self conscious in photos and social interactions, I felt the exact same way. When people say they 'didn't notice', I never believed it. because there were too many instances where people did notice and most important of all, I noticed it. It's very hard for most people to understand how debilitating a squint can be day-to-day.

I am extremely happy with the result of my squint surgery and would highly recommend Mr Ali. I am an adult who had never experienced any symptoms or even been aware that I had a squint. However, I suddenly developed rapidly worsening vision and persistent double vision due to a decompensated squint. In less than two months, I went from having perfectly straight eyes to having a very noticeable squint in one eye and significant double vision. Receiving this diagnosis and being told that surgery was required was quite daunting initially. Undergoing eye surgery is a significant decision, and I wanted to make sure I chose the right surgeon. I did extensive research and met with several specialists in London before ultimately choosing Mr Ali because of his extensive experience, focus and high volume of adult squint cases, and expertise with adjustable sutures. I genuinely believe I could not have made a better decision. From my first appointment, Mr Ali provided reassurance and his experience, thoroughness, and the way he cares for his patients made me feel that I was in very safe hands. He was always patient and willing to answer my (many) questions, while providing helpful context and explaining things clearly. I had my surgery less than two months after my diagnosis and had an excellent experience throughout, from the pre-operative appointments through to surgery and recovery. The post-operative suture adjustment to fine-tune the alignment was initially a little daunting, but I felt reassured throughout and the whole process went very smoothly. The care I received after surgery was equally excellent. Mr Ali was very responsive, answered my questions promptly, and actively checked in on my recovery. Knowing that I could contact him directly was extremely reassuring. The cosmetic result has been excellent, but most importantly, my double vision has completely disappeared and my vision has improved significantly. Now, a little over two months after surgery, I am extremely happy with both the result and the healing process. I feel that I am seeing at least as well as I did before my problems began, and possibly even better. My depth perception has also improved, and I have realised that some of the limitations I had previously experienced were things I had simply assumed were normal for me. I am very grateful to Mr Ali and his team for their expertise, reassurance, and care throughout the entire process. What initially felt like a very frightening experience turned into a remarkably positive one.

I was understandably apprehensive about getting eye surgery, but Mr Ali really lived up to his incredible reputation. I was referred to him by the Belfast Cathedral Eye Clinic, who spoke very highly of his results. From the beginning, Mr Ali clarified expectations and answered all my questions in detail. His communication skills and humanity are plain to see. The whole process was unbelievably smooth. I wish I hadn’t worried at all! Everyone at the clinic was friendly and approachable. I am so pleased with the results and already feel more confident. I had squint surgery a few weeks ago and could not be happier with the results, it has transformed my life. Initially I was apprehensive at having surgery on my eye but there was absolutely nothing to worry about. Mr Ali explained everything in detail to me and was calm and reassuring every step of the way. I no longer have to worry about all the things I did before such as where I could sit when out with a group so I didn’t have to look to my left. I worried constantly that people noticed my squint and it was affecting my confidence. This surgery has had such a dramatic difference to not only my vision but how I feel and see myself. Everything went so smoothly on the day, I was operated on in the morning and home by mid afternoon. For anyone suffering with a squint please go and see Mr Ali, he is such a kind and caring person. It’s hard to find the words to express how deeply grateful I am to Dr Ali for his skill in curing my severe double vision. When my problem became bad enough to affect my confidence and restrict my active lifestyle, I researched ‘double vision surgery’ and found the London Squint Clinic. I checked out Dr Ali’s credentials with a local optician (I live in the North East of England) and was told “if anyone can sort out your double vision, it is Nadeem Ali”. I then had a couple of video consultations with Dr Ali; initially he wasn’t sure whether he could help me, but after seeing my test results and measurements he decided he could. He didn’t over-promise however, telling me that he thought he could correct 75% of my problem. That was enough to encourage me to book the first available surgery date. Because I live 270 miles away I booked myself into the hospital (Spire St Anthony’s) for a post-op overnight stay. The hospital was lovely and once I had met Dr Ali and the anaesthetist any nervousness disappeared. A few hours after surgery Dr Ali removed my bandage and I was excited to find that I had fantastic single vision! There was no pain, just an occasional dull ache for the first few days, after which recovery was straightforward. The pre- and post-op zoom calls, and access to Dr Ali on WhatsApp, meant that despite living hundreds of miles away I always felt connected and well cared for. I understand that I was one of Dr Ali’s more complicated cases, but thanks to his phenomenal skill and years of experience he was able to 95% cure my severe double vision. This man is the best! Before deciding to have surgery, I was understandably nervous and uncertain. Eye surgery is not something you take lightly, but any concerns I had quickly disappeared after meeting Dr. Ali and his team. From my very first consultation, they were professional, reassuring and took the time to answer every question I had, leaving me feeling completely confident that I was in the best possible hands. The surgery itself was far more straightforward than I had imagined. In my case, everything went smoothly, and I was able to leave the clinic early that same afternoon. The results have exceeded my expectations. For many years I had been very self-conscious about my squint, particularly whenever photographs were taken. It was something I was always aware of and often tried to hide. Since the surgery, that self-consciousness has gone. It has genuinely changed how I feel about having my photograph taken and has given me a confidence I didn't expect to regain. What has impressed me just as much as the surgery itself has been the aftercare. Dr. Ali's support throughout my recovery was exceptional. I honestly don’t know how to write this review without sounding dramatic but I think this is one of those times where dramatic is completely justified. I first booked an appointment with Mr Ali at the London Squint Clinic in May 2025. At that point, I had already lived with eye problems for most of my life. My first eye turn was when I was around 4 years old and since then I feel like I have done the full strabismus bingo card: corrective surgery as a child, glasses, patches, Botox, atropine drops, the lot. Before seeing Mr Ali, I had been told on the NHS that nothing could really be done and that surgery was too risky. I was also honestly told that it was in my head by some doctors and that I needed to focus or I was making it worse than it is. I accepted that for a long time because when you are told something is not possible, you believe it. But knowing the outcome I have had now, I genuinely wish I had explored it sooner. I came to Mr Ali knowing that my case was not simple. He operated in June on one eye, then another operation in September on the other eye. 2 months ago I had my third and final surgery with mr Ali - That might seem a lot but we were cautious of over correction because at this point I was already chuffed with the outcome. at one point my eyes looked beautifully straight, but I still had double vision when looking to the left. Anything to the left of my central vision was double and It affected so much more than people realise. I couldn’t drive properly with double vision. If I had one eye patched, even if technically I could legally drive, I didn’t feel safe or confident. I would bump the curb and scratch my tyres because my judgement just wasn’t right. I now drive confidently. That alone has changed my life. I can now sit and have a conversation with someone on my left. I can look someone in the eye without having to alternate between which eye has focus. I don’t have to overthink where I am looking or whether the other person can tell. I don’t feel like I am constantly managing my vision and my face at the same time. Before this, I had tried Botox injections and had drooping eyelids. I had a haemorrhage in my eye that lasted over a month. It is exhausting. It makes you want to hide. What I appreciated from the beginning was Mr Ali’s honesty. He never overpromised. He explained things clearly. I always felt informed and respected. I think he understood that I knew things were complicated, and I appreciated his approach of: we will do our absolute best and I knew he meant it. I can honestly say the result has changed my life. Mr Ali’s post-operative care is unlike anything I have experienced before. He is reassuring, calm and goes above and beyond. I am also one of those rare people who seems to be allergic to absolutely everything, especially eye drops, because apparently I like to keep medical professionals on their toes. So thank you for dealing with me being so complicated again on top of it all. The impact has been far bigger than cosmetic. I don’t feel shy in groups now. I don’t hide from photographs, video calls or people looking at me. My confidence at work has improved. I contribute more. I don’t shy away from being on camera or being seen. For anyone who has lived with a squint, double vision, or a misalignment of the eyes in any way you will understand that this is not vanity. It affects how you move through the world. It affects driving, conversations, eye contact, confidence, work, social situations and whether you feel comfortable being noticed.
