Wonderful day in Champagne. Rafael met us at the train station. We had signed up for a group tour, but we got lucky and it was just me and my husband. So we had a private tour. My husband and I had come back to Reims for our anniversary to taste new champagne, and learn more about the area. We got to do a tour of Reims, Épernay and of house Pommery. Rafael was so informative and glad to answer questions we had. He was knowledgeable in the history of the area, the cathedral, the wars and of champagne. It was a full day of fun. He even took us to a small champagne house. We highly recommend this tour if you’re looking for more than tastings.

Above all our expectations! WWl Our day spent with Rafael was amazing from the pick up at our hotel, La château des Monthairions, until the minute he dropped us off yesterday evening. Our planning and contacting Rafael started months ago. We wanted our tour tailored to follow in the footsteps of my grandfather who has served in the AEF in WWl. We sent Rafael copies of his diary, photographs and letters from a Frenchwoman he had fallen in love with when he was stationed at St. Dizier, south of Verdun. Raphael also told us of the places we could easily visit on our own in four days we would be here, places with all the information there in English, as well as French and German. So, in our first two days we went on our own to St. Dizier, the Verdun Memorial, Belleau Wood, the Meuse Argonne American Cemetery and the St. Mihiel American Cemetery, and trenches up in the hills. So then yesterday we visited More American Cemeteries that we would not have, a trench reconstuction and most impressively the two fortesses in those built for the protection of Vernun, Fort Vaux and Ft. Douaumont! Raphael is not only well versed on the history we were seeing, but also more informative than any tour book or museum could ever be. He made the history of the forts come alive. Two men were so impressed with overhearing that they tried to eves-drop! Not only is Rapael knowledgeable, but he delivers in a captivating way, (which as a retired DOD art teacher, I really appreciated!). Too, his organizational abilities are exceptional, as is his Mercedes van. Now for the pièce de résistance- Today Raphael wrote me on the research he did last night on my grandfather’s French love. He sent me an email on why I was unable to track her down in St. Dizier. He found she had moved to Lyon, and why, and whom she had married and when (her father-in-law was a famous French artist which I loved!), the year she died and her children and grandchildren. Coincidentally, the final leg of our trip takes us to Lyon, so we plan to try to find her grandchildren! Merci from my heart, Rafael! We hope to see you when next in France! We were just in Epernay before this. I wish we had contacted you about that!

Rafael was not only incredibly professional, his knowledge of the areas, memorials and forts was completely tailored to our interests, based upon my grandfather’s service in the Verdun area with the AEF. We had had prior correspondence with Rafael so that he could narrow down what would be pertinent to us specifically. He also helped me to learn more about the French woman my grandfather fell in love with during his time in St. Dizier as he tried to track her down. We really enjoyed our day spent with Rafael and will contact him again next time we are in France. Merci beaucoup, Rafael!

The tour was well planned and thought out. It was a good mix of seeing new places and having some experiences; like taking the cork of the champagne off with a sabre. We covered all of the important things; Notra Dame church in Reims, champagne Dom Perignon's grave, Vineyards, tastings at a large champagne manufacturer Pomeroy, and a small family-owned Chateaux, Pierre Monlet. Where we got to meet his son, the owner. Raphael, our guide was very knowledgeable about the entire champagne making process, the history of the church where Dom Perignon is buried, and even the history of the stained glass windows in Notre-Dame church in Reims. He could answer any questions. It's a great tour you don't feel rushed you cover everything and you learn a lot in the process

We had a perfect day in Reims with Rafael! He showed us the grape vines and explained how they grow and are harvested. The highlight of the day was visiting a small producer who explained the process of making champagne and showed us his chalk cellars. The private tasting was delicious! Rafael was a great host showing us downtown Reims where he made lunch recommendations. After a tour of Vueve Clicquot, Rafael walked us through Notre Dame in Reims and explained the history and details of the church. He was so informed and kind. You are in good hands with Rafael!

I was very happy the whole day with the tour today. Getting a mix of one big Champagne producer Pommery and then a smaller family Champagne Producer. The Pommery champagne cellars were a special treat because in the chalk caves where they store the Champagne, there were wonderful art installations that made the visit even more interesting. I loved getting more detailed information about the history and culture of both Reims and Epernay. Lunch on our own was great so we could stroll around Epernay. Visiting the small family Champagne producer was so much fun because we were able to meet them. And their Champagnes were affordable. And the biggest surprise of all, we were able to learn how to safely Sabre the Champagne bottle AND do it on our own. ❣️🥰 It was a tour full of thoughful surprises.
