EDITED to respond: This is my first attempt at bleeding bike brakes, hence my ignorance of the Spurs which I held my hands up to. Why on earth would I use any fluid other than that you have sent me? Having been in retail for 17 years myself, sometimes the customer is just right. I did absolutely everything you asked of me, by the book. And to be clear I didn't "threaten" this review, I asked for an explanation which you so far haven't been able to give me, instead opting to infer I am lying. If you can't give an explanation, then I politely asked for a refund. Something things don't work out. In the absence of either I assume me sharing my experience is fine.
ORIGINAL
So I checked with TBS before writing this, as I HATE leaving negative reviews.
I bought a Tektro bleed kit. I'd noted the Syringes weren't very smooth when I first opened it but assumed the Mineral oil would loosen them up.
I proceeded to attempt a bleed, following the instructions to a T, but found it very difficult to push or pull the syringes with one hand. The pipes also kept coming off the Syringes.
I emailed regarding my issues, and credit to them, I got a reply on the weekend. They explained about the pipe spurs in the kit (of which there are no mention in the instructions) which I fitted and resolved my "pipe coming off" issue. However the Syringes were still stiff.
Initially they suggested my brake system was at fault but I explained they were stiff off the bike and without fluid in them.
By now, less than 48 hours after the first bleed, the syringes were impossible to push or pull, with the rubber plungers coming off. TBS then said this was because I hadn't washed them (keep in mind they were stiff from new and even worse after first bleed) so, despite there being zero mention of cleaning in the instructions, I gave them a wash with warm water and some dish soap.
After rinsing and drying thoroughly, the rubber plungers swelled up so much they would no longer fit into the syringes.
I asked again for an explanation as to why they were sticking and not once was offered a resolution. No explanation, no offer to return the syringes for examination or offer to send out replacements.
I wasn't getting anywhere so flippantly asked if I need to buy another bleed kit, to which the response was basically "Yes"
So I did. I bought an Epic bleed kit. Same money but tellingly no rubber plungers and the pipe barbs are pre-fitted. The syringes pushed and pulled smoothly and I performed a bleed quickly and easily and despite me not washing them, 5 days later still moved smoothly. The difference was night and day.
Before posting this review I asked for a reasonable explanation as to why the syringes were so stiff or a refund, as I don't believe they are fit for purpose. I said in my email, if my experience is considered normal, then there should be no issue with me sharing it with others.
I received no reply.
It's only Β£16, it's not the end of the world, but it's the principle of not being able to justify why the kit simply didn't work. I hate leaving bad reviews but don't feel I have any choice.
It's 2 stars because delivery was prompt and despite an unsatisfactory conclusion, the communication was good.
As always there are two sides to every story so in short..
Mike got in touch initially to complain that he had wasted lots of fluid trying to bleed his brakes. As we were in communication with Mike we realised he hadn't put his kit together properly. When he realised this he then complained that the syringes were stiff. Having sold 1000s of these kits around the world this is unusual as a syringe is a syringe. Its a pretty basic bit of kit and for both to be stiff it points to a few things. The brake system is not opened up properly causing a restriction in flow? DOT fluid and Mineral fluid have been used on the same syringes causing the parts to swell? Or the kit has not been looked after properly and residue left in the parts has caused them to become sticky in some way?
We explained all of this to Mike but it wasn't what he wanted to hear. We did recommend that he bought another kit or at least new tube and syringes for his own safety as we didn't know what fluids he had now used them with. Again that wasn't what Mike wanted to hear so he threatened to leave us a negative review if we didnt send him one for free. We love our customers and will always help them however we can as you can see by our reviews. We are always friendly and respectful but we wont be threatened into giving things away for free if the problem is not our fault. We tried to help and explain things as much as we could to Mike but this is the option he chose. There is no bad feeling from TBS, sometimes we just cant please everyone.
