We did a sunset island tour from Olhão through the beautiful Ria Formosa and it ended up being one of our favorite experiences in the Algarve.
Our captain, William, was fantastic. He effortlessly switched between English, French, and German for our small group of ten and shared stories about the islands, the lagoon, and Portuguese culture that felt personal rather than scripted. That makes sense once you learn he grew up and went to school on one of the islands. When we arrived, people in the small community greeted him like an old friend — which made the whole experience feel much more authentic.
The water in the lagoon is incredibly clear (almost Mediterranean-like), and along the way we saw several bird species, including an eagle.
William stopped on one of the islands for dinner before sunset, and it was perfect: fresh local seafood, a cold beer for me, and a crisp green wine (Vinho Verde) for my wife — both exactly what the moment called for. We ate just steps away from local fishermen who were finishing their own meals and laughing together after the day’s work. It felt relaxed and genuinely local.
Then William made sure we were in the perfect spot for sunset, which capped the evening beautifully.
Great captain, great stories, great seafood, and a perfect Algarve sunset.
Highly recommend.
