Our son started working with Becky, the Reading Doctor, at the end of Year 5. He had always struggled with reading and would often try to mask it by choosing the biggest books in front of his classmates, avoiding reading aloud whenever possible. Reading at home had become a nightly battle because the books he brought home from school weren’t suited to him. All I knew was that I didn’t want him going into secondary school still struggling to read. Our school mentioned the Reading Doctor and were able to secure funding for a term. We had an introductory meeting with Becky at the school, and immediately she was so understanding of our son’s situation. He has several additional challenges that affect his long-term memory, and Becky spoke directly to him, explaining what the process involved and what we hoped the outcome would be. He walked into that meeting full of apprehension and walked out at ease, even saying to me, “She seems a really nice lady.” Becky got to work with him straight away, and by the end of that school term his progress was incredible. His reading ability had improved so much, and he was beginning to feel comfortable reading in front of us and even his peers. When the new term started, the funding was no longer available, but we chose to continue privately because the results were simply too amazing to stop. Becky now visits the school once a week, and the impact continues to grow. A true testament to her work came at the end of the October half-term: for the first time ever, our son wrote a story and read it aloud to his whole class, their teachers, and the headteacher. The headteacher even wrote to me afterwards to say how proud she was, and that it brought tears to her eyes to see how far he had come. I will forever champion and recommend Becky and the Reading Doctor. They have worked wonders for our son, continue to do so, and we are endlessly grateful that the school recommended her to us.

The work Becky does and Becky herself are both incredible. My daughter has always struggled with learning and has very low self confidence around reading and writing but Becky has worked her magic and now my daughter can not wait to go every week. My daughter's confidence is so much better and she looks forward to showing everyone the progress she makes every time she goes. She has made so much progress in a short time and we can not wait to see how amazingly she does going forward. Becky makes everyone feel so comfortable and ready to learn, plus makes the learning a lot of fun. We would recommend Becky and the Reading Doctor programme to everyone!!!

My son was only meant to go to sessions for six weeks over the summer holidays at the end of Year R, but we found it so invaluable that he’s still going a year and a half later. We found the class often moved on without him when it came to reading and Becky and really closed the gap. She’s so patient and really tailors each session to his strengths, so he doesn’t lose interest . The reward system keeps him motivated, and his progress has been amazing, we went from being quite far behind to completely on track. Initially, I was a bit hesitant about spending the money, but she’s honestly worth her weight in gold. my son never complains about going, which says it all! I can’t recommend Becky highly enough.

Our daughter was refusing to read with us at home and we suspected this was due to her finding it harder than she should be. From a school perspective she was just about hitting her milestones, but she had no confidence and therefore became very reluctant. We wanted her to have a love of reading and do something before she started to fall behind, so approached Danielle. Danielle has found ways to inspire our daughter to read, which stems from her now having confidence. She loves her sessions every week, keen to go in and excited to share what she has been up to. Varied tasks, bespoke to our daughters needs and interests make the sessions so valuable. We would highly recommend Danielle and can't thank her enough for all the progress we have seen!

Couldn't not recommend or appreciate Danielle more than I do for everything she has done with my son. He was very behind at school in reading, spelling and writing when Danielle started with him, and was at a school where he wasn't understood or helped, and he avoided doing anything to do with them the whole time. Danielle brought his confidence back, enabling him to believe in himself. He has come on in leaps and bounds in every aspect and seeing Danielle for his reading doctor session is his favourite part of the week. x

Danielle is amazing!! My daughter was really low on confidence when she started with Danielle and because of dyslexia and needing to work so hard to read she didn’t enjoy it at all. Reading Doctor is now her favourite club, she has bonded so well with Danielle who has given her confidence and skill, my daughter has gone up multiple reading levels and most recently gone back into the mainstream of her class at school for reading and comprehension. We cannot thank Danielle enough for her time and care.

Katherine and the reading doctor group have been fantastic for our son (age 8). Our son has suspected dyslexia and he was struggling to keep up in school with reading and writing. He started regularly weekly lessons with Katherine and after one year his reading had caught up academically and his fluency had seen massive improvements. As Katherine is an ex teacher, she has a brilliant kind way with the children and our son has been happy to attend and learn every week. There are also small incentives like picking a small toy from a treasure chest which our son loves and we get a diary entry each week to show what he's been learning so we feel well informed. Our son being able to spend more time on some of the reading and writing rules on a 1:1 basis has definitely helped and we are continuing for a second year of reading doctor tutoring. We would definitely recommend :)

My son attended sessions with Georgina a few weeks before his GCSEs as he wasn’t feeling confident before his exams. After a few sessions, his confidence improved and his understanding was so much better. He did so well in his results - we are so pleased we found ‘The Reading Doctor. My daughter has been attending sessions with Sally (The Reading Doctor) since January this year. My daughter’s progression has been outstanding and noticed by family members and friends, this has also had a reflection with her school progress. Her teacher noticed a difference in her ability to read from just over a month! It also reflected on her school report too! Sally has made a brilliant and professional relationship with my daughter and she enjoys going for her sessions each week. The recourses Sally provides in order for my daughter to continue practicing at home are brilliant and very resourceful. My daughter is now starting to enjoy to read because now she can! Couldn’t recommend Sally enough, she is patient and kind natured and gets children back stuck into books!

My son has been attending Liz, The Reading Doctor North, since October — and the improvement in his reading has been truly incredible. With Liz’s dedicated support, his confidence has grown immensely. She has helped him believe in his abilities, and he absolutely loves and looks forward to his weekly lessons. I also want to give a special mention to her wonderful learning environment. From the creatively designed storybook wall that greets you as you walk in, to the beautiful garden with comfortable seating for parents, Liz has thoughtfully created a space that caters to everyone’s needs. My son finds it difficult to sit still at times, but Liz’s approach is patient and accommodating. The Reading Doctor programme is clearly designed for children who may need a little extra time and understanding. She even has a calming chair and a stool he can use to tap his feet — small touches that make a big difference. I can’t recommend Liz highly enough!
