Short version: I recommend them—they do quality work, are easy to work with, and are not trying to screw you over. I have already recommended them to good friends of mine, and if I need anything else done on my house, I will be contacting them.
Long version: I hired Maxwell to do essentially a whole home remodel on a 1950s ranch house I bought—bones were good and it was well cared for, but it probably hadn’t had much updating done for 20-70 years or so, depending on the room. They did full remodels on my kitchen, unusually large laundry room (including moving plumbing/HVAC to relocate the w/d units from their original position), 2.5 baths (having to add fans to two of them), and I had them replace all of the window trim in the house. I wish I had had them do some stuff I’d had done by other people, but at this point I just have to count that as learning expensive lessons as a first-time homeowner.
Their estimates are long to read, but they give you a full breakdown of all the expenses, not just some mystery number of what a project will cost. They do their contracts and materials selection on-line, so you don’t have to keep driving out to an office to go through everything.
They are not the cheapest around, nor are they the most expensive; I’d say they’re middle range. I think I’m getting excellent value in quality of the work for the cost of the remodels. Some of that value is the peace of mind that I can trust them to do a nice job.
Their timelines are reasonable. They are easy to get in touch with by e-mail and text.
They do beautiful work—I’m very happy with the quality. I think they are skilled and genuinely take pride in their skill sets—they want it to look good and be done well. That’s… not true of everyone out there, from what I’ve unfortunately had to learn the hard way.
They are very receptive to any issues I had with anything or any changes I made after the fact. Examples- there was an issue with the way the granite kitchen counter had been cut, which required replacing the counter altogether (not cheap), and because it was a miscommunication on their part, they covered the cost of replacing the countertop. I had them pull out the stone base of a shower niche that they had placed because I realized after they had cut it and set it in place that I hated the color (I paid for this change of course, but they were very nice about it when I asked to do it even though it was not a minor request). I changed my mind on where/whether to hang towel racks or mirrors after they were already hung. I added on projects like changing out all the window trim in the house.
They never leave messes either in or outside of the house—to the point that I’ve seen them shop vac sawdust up from my driveway. I really want to stress- I have NEVER had to clean up after them in any way.
They are friendly and nice and not creepy (as a single lady hiring lots of people who are mostly men to do work on various aspects of a house, you’d be surprised how often that gets… weird).
I really don’t have any complaints. The countertop situation was frustrating, but they made it right. I think they’re fair and reasonable, do quality work, and are easy to work with. I’ve certainly made some missteps with other people doing work at the house and it not turning out well. I consider myself very fortunate to have had the luck to find Maxwell to do the vast majority of the work since then. I have already recommended them to good friends of mine. If my coworkers or neighbors needed something remodeled, I would recommend Maxwell to them. If I have to have something else done to the house, I will be contacting Maxwell.

I would give them 10 stars if I could. I have been working with them for the past 6 months doing remodeling of my townhouse. They are always quick to respond, very respectful, and try to accommodate my needs. There have been times I was frustrated for something totally out of their control, and they have been very patient with me to get things work. Their on-site team does amazing job, not just for meticulous construction work but keeping the site clean everyday without leaving any mess after their work. They are very friendly and my cats even opened up to them! They always lock the entrance door every time they go out just for a short time period and I feel safe to leave my fur babies home while they are working, which is not always the case with the other contractors. I'm doing more remodeling with them next year. I highly recommend them to anyone who is looking for a general contractor.

My family has spent the last several years saving and planning a full on gut Reno to our 1920's Detroit Tudor. After an exhausting search for a quality builder we choose Maxwell Construction. The highlights of working with Joe and his team boil down to quality, care, and ability to listen and adapt. Along with general gut Reno rebuild, this project included tearing down a wall to expand the floor plan, install custom cabinets, panel appliances, and several odds and ends including wall mount shelves and specific shelving inside cabinets. All of this took a lot of time and attention which I believe the Maxwell team did an outstanding job at. The team at Maxwell was amazing. We did a complete basement finish with them. Everyone from the owner to the craftspeople who did the work were excellent, mindful and detailed. They were active in helping us figure out what we wanted at every step, from suggestions on layout down to the placement of bathroom tile. They all played a part in helping us achieve an awesome new space in our house that we use every day. Rarely have I found a contracted group of people as invested as we were in the outcome of a project. Maxwell will be our first call for any future improvement to our house.

Kitchen Remodel Nightmare
The absolute worst customer experience we have ever had is the nightmare of having a kitchen remodel done by Maxwell Building Services. We have never spent so much time completely frustrated and absolutely furious with a company and its owner. We have never been threatened with legal action until dealing with Maxwell and have been threatened multiple times with serious legal actions over the course of the two-and-a-half-year ongoing ordeal. Maxwell Building Services filed a lawsuit against us on September 30, 2024, alleging defamation for posting factual, truthful reviews and honest opinions including in Google, Yelp, and BBB reviews.
In June 2022, we were threatened with legal action that would make us pay about $30,000 to Maxwell with no work being done if we cancelled the contract when we were informed of a three-month delay in the start of the project due to the lack of a crew. We were stuck in a horrible position.
We were left without a functional kitchen for over five months for a project that was supposed to take 2-3 months. The project management was terrible during the entire project with the project manager ghosting us when there were issues, and very rarely visiting the job site. The costs ballooned by 55% with no change in scope of the project. Work was done over 10 months, but the job was not finished, and final inspections were not scheduled by Maxwell.
In March 2023, Maxwell’s attorney sent me a letter threatening legal action for defamation against Maxwell if I did not remove my complaints to the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and Michigan Department of Licensing & Regulatory Affairs (LARA) within five days. The complaint with the BBB was closed 3/16/2023. The complaint with LARA was updated on 3/22/2023 to remove verbiage that could be possibly construed as defamation.
On 7/7/2023 I sent a final payment for the correct amount due based on the actual costs of the project. No further balance was due to Maxwell unless they completed the incomplete punch list items to earn the holdback, which they never did.
On 8/4/2023 Maxwell recorded a lien against our property for $8,754.18. I responded saying that the lien was invalid since Maxwell never completed the project and had been paid in full the correct amount and requested the lien to be vacated immediately. I engaged a construction attorney for assistance in removing the lien. The lien was in place for 12 months.
On 7/23/2024, Maxwell’s attorney contacted our attorney offering a settlement of $6,000 to have the lien removed. We declined this offer. On 7/29/2024, Maxwell’s attorney contacted our attorney stating that they would be filing a foreclosure suit. No suit was filed, and on 8/5/2024 I had a discharge of lien processed and recorded to have the lien discharged.
On 9/30/2024, Maxwell Building Services filed a lawsuit (case 2024-210048-CZ) against me and my wife alleging breach of contract, defamation, and tortious interference with a business relationship or expectancy, that we are vigorously defending against. On 10/4/2024, Maxwell Building Services filed for a temporary restraining order to force us to remove all negative reviews, and the restraining order was denied. On 10/16/2024 there was a show cause hearing in the Oakland County Circuit Court, and my wife and I agreed not to publish any false statements regarding Maxwell Building Services.
The remodel job from Maxwell Building Services has been a two-and-a-half-year nightmare that is continuing. We never expected to be treated the way we were treated by a BBB accredited and A+ rated business. We look forward to an investigation of our complaint against Maxwell with the Michigan Department of Licensing & Regulatory Affairs (LARA).
