Don't miss this experience!
One of the highlights of our trip! Top notch experience for the whole family: we had 20 year olds up to retirees and everyone in our group had a terrific experience and learned a lot! This is done in an actual DOJO and the teachers are excellent - plus so much fun!!!
Get in your flow in a real dojo! Perfect for adult couple
I looked at many samurai and ninja experiences before booking this one. We are a nomadic couple in our 30s and wanted a fun, slightlyyyyy athletic, and genuine experience. Check, check, CHECK! It was important to us that it wasn’t just a tourist experience, trying on armour or throwing a single ninja star for kids. This blew our expectations out of the water! We entered the dojo and were outfitted in our training robes. Then we got a brief overview and got to spend the majority of the time learning a flow with our sword. (I am butchering all the technical terms). We were split into two groups which made it really fun because you could watch and film your partner you came with, and then get into the zone when it was your turn. You’re given multiple rounds learning the flow before a final (and very low key) performance. We had a blast! Could not recommend more, do it!! (PS SJM fans, I felt like a real life Valkyrie)
A Must-Do Experience in Kyoto
This was a really unique experience. We dressed up in a robe and hakama, and ran thorough a basic kata with practice iai in the dojo, including how to draw the sword, attacking, blocking, cleaning and sheathing. After our training, we got to watch Master Yoshino perform two separate katas with wazikashi and katana, one of which involved fighting multiple opponents. I think compared to other samurai experiences I have seen, this actually gives training for how samurai would fight in an actual dojo rather than just dressing up in armor. Would recommend adding this to the must-do list for anyone visiting Kyoto who is interested in the samurai
Authentic and Memorable Experience
We had a great time at the Samurai Training. It felt authentic, well organized, and truly memorable. The instructors were friendly, knowledgeable, and made the whole experience fun while also teaching us about the history and traditions of the samurai. It was a unique way to experience Japanese culture, and I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Kyoto.
Samurai Training
Hi went to the Yushinkan dojo in Kyoto and done some hands on training with sensei Yoshi was a great experience actual learned how to do the basic moves with a real katana sensei Yoshi and his student Jordan worked with us and by the end we all were doing the moves. If anyone wants to do this sort of thing this is the place as it’s a proper dojo you will have a great experience doing it. Ralph Havard
Can't reccomend it enough
It was a amazing learning from an actual sensei in an actual dojo how to weild a katana - unlike the others this is not just a tourist activity it is a full experience which i can't reccomend enough to anyone! While most people (including myself) wanted to cut something with a katana, this was banned in Japan for tourist. I don't feel however that my experience was dampened at all by not doing that however, if anything it gave us more time to learn way more than I had expected. After the almost 2 hours where we learned the basics of how to weild a katana, it became very quickly clear to me how dangerous any of the movements we learned could be with a real sharp one. We worked in a small crowd of 4 so we felt very cared for. The atmosphere was relaxed and the staff was above and beyond lovely!
Great samurai experience.
My son and I had an excellent time with the team at Yushinkan, learning about the way of the samurai. The katanas we used were very cool, the instructors were knowledgeable and approachable, and the demonstrations were very impressive. I also liked that this was held in a real life dojo. Very much recommended!
The real deal!
We had an absolutely incredible samurai training experience that felt truly authentic from beginning to end. The training took place in a real dojo, not a staged or touristy setup, which made it feel deeply special and immersive. The sensei was the real deal — calm, focused, and incredibly skilled — and you could immediately feel the respect and tradition in the room. What made it even more unique was that there were apprentices assisting throughout the session, creating a genuine training atmosphere rather than a performance. Every movement was taught with intention, and you could sense the discipline and history behind what we were learning. It wasn’t just about technique — it was about mindset, presence, and respect. This is not a tourist attraction. It’s a rare opportunity to step into a real part of Japanese culture and experience it firsthand. If you’re looking for something meaningful, authentic, and unforgettable, this is it.
Really fun experience!
Really fun class with great teachers who taught us a lot about the Samurai culture and weapons. Jordan was excellent and so knowledgeable. Yoshi-SAN’s skills were amazing to watch! Overall, it was a great experience to learn from a true sensei and practice in a real dojo!
Absolutely Amazing
We went with my family as tourists, but it felt like we left as trained students. It was so good. We went for an hour and the atmosphere was amazing. When we first walked in, the staff immediately greeted us warmly and helped us get into our clothes for the training. Once we got into the clothes they sat us down and explained some history of the samurai, and it wasn’t like a class, it was like it was one on one learning, and it was amazing. Then they handed us the Katanas and taught us a formation and we got to do it! I won’t spoil it all but at the end you get to watch the teachers cut through Tatami mats. 11/10, must recommend.
