We had an amazing kayaking tour with Jun from Yakushima Geographic Tour. It was the perfect activity right after our 3-hour ferry ride—fun, refreshing, and very well paced. My two boys absolutely loved it, especially with the beautiful weather and calm waters. Jun speaks excellent English and is incredibly thoughtful. He constantly checked on us to make sure we were comfortable and safe, and his friendly guidance made the entire experience enjoyable and relaxing. A wonderful surprise was the memorable video he filmed and shared with us—such a special way to remember our time in Yakushima. Overall, this was one of the highlights of our trip. Highly recommended tour and an outstanding guide. If you’re visiting Yakushima, make sure to book a tour with Jun!

Junichi is exceptional! Junichi is one of the best guides I’ve ever had the pleasure of traveling with. From the moment we met, he was warm, professional, and incredibly attentive to our pace and preferences. He communicated clearly, planned our days thoughtfully, and always had a quiet backup plan ready in case we needed to slow down or change direction. He balanced history, culture, food, and scenery in a way that never felt rushed or touristy. The first thing you need to know about Yakushima is that the forests on this island is nothing short of magical, perhaps otherworldly. Even though heavy rains and typhoons engulf Yakushima frequently, it is teeming with beauty and history. The island's ancient cedar trees go about their daily lives with quiet resilience and peacefully, unperturbed by the forces of nature and whatever comes their way. My wife and I were fascinated by this - even our Japanese friends in Singapore told us that Yakushima is 'different'. Convinced that we had to visit, we re-arranged our travel dates to discover what the island had in store for us. After doing some research on the various hiking trails, we decided to engage Junichi-san's services to pay a visit to Yamato-sugi. On the day of our hike, Junichi-san picked us up at our hotel at 6.30am punctually, and drove us quietly as we munched on our breakfast in his car (thank you Junichi-san for allowing us to do that!). Along the way, he slowed down to let us get a closer look at some wild monkeys and deer by the roadside. On hindsight, we should have known that this was a preview to Junichi's passion and knowledge of Yakushima's natural environment, and all things flora and fauna. As one would expect, we were greeted by many old trees, both alive and fallen, and moss-covered logs and massive roots. These were magical, but what made it even more magical were the moments when Junichi paused and pointed to small things in the forest that you wouldn't notice. The man also has a sense of humour. At one point, our path was blocked by a tree that had fallen down recently. He said he would be back one day with a chainsaw to clear the path. I remarked 'wow, you have a chainsaw!'. He nonchantly replied 'Yeah everyone in Yakushima has a chainsaw'. I hate to imagine what would happen if everyone in Yakushima were to riot. With Junichi's utmost guidance and patience, we traversed through steep terrain and reached Yamato-sugi safely. He heat up our lunch, made us miso soup and hojicha tea while we basked in the shade of a 3000-year old ancient being. We asked questions about Yamato-sugi and Junichi patiently replied to the best of his abilities. On the way back, he would pause on the bridge and listen to the sound of the river streams gliding past the rocks on the riverbed. "Isn't it peaceful?", he would ask. It was clear to see that this man, who had spent 20-odd years on the island, was very passionate in his craft - a clear embodiment of 'Kodawari'. Over dinner, my wife and I couldn't stop talking about what happened in the day - all this would not have been possible without Junichi. If you ever visit Yakushima with the intention of hiking its almost-mythical forest trails or doing other activities, do give your highest consideration to reserve a slot with Junichi-san. We believe that he has been called to guide visitors on the island he calls home. -Julian and Juliana

We had an amazing time with Jun. He’s truly passionate about Yakushima and the forest. The night before our Tour, Jun alerted us to the weather conditions, the heavy rain that was forcasted and recommend we change to the Yakusugi Land Tour We took his suggestion to go on the safer Yakusugi-Land tour and had an amazing time walking/ hiking in the rain with Umbrella's. Was truely an unforgettable experience. He also took many wonderful photos of us and the forest throughout the tour, which he kindly shared afterward. It was such a pleasure to welcome you back to Yakushima for a second time—and even more so to have you join mus again. For now, overseas guests returning twice is still quite rare, so it really shows how much you love this island. That truly means a lot to me.

At first we planned for Mt. Kuromi, but with the weather looking unstable and the wind direction being clear, I felt Mt. Tachu would be the safer and more enjoyable choice. I’m glad we made that switch—the mountain gave us a wonderful day to share together.

Junichi-san is a phenomenal guide and I highly recommend his tours if you visit Yakushima - I wouldn't hesitate to contact him again for future treks! The night before my tour in May, Junichi-san promptly and understandably alerted me that it was better not to go ahead with my original tour for Shiratani-Unsuikyo due to safety concerns with weather and risk from heavy rain (Yakushima's weather is especially unpredictable). Junichi-san was flexible and professional, and I took his suggestion to go on the then safer Yakusugi-Land tour instead. During the tour it was still raining quite a bit, but Junichi-san carefully assessed the conditions at every stage and clearly communicated how far we could go. Luckily, it was feasible the whole time and thanks to his expert judgement we could complete the hike safely at my own pace. I'm very grateful for both his willingness to accomodate during challenging weather, while being very professional and ensuring safety as the top concern. Junichi-san speaks excellent English and was very accommodating in both English and Japanese. Junichi-san is very friendly and we had many great conversations, and alongside his expert knowledge of nature and Japanese culture, this made the tour highly enjoyable from the car rides to the trek through the amazing forest. Despite having to do a different tour than originally planned, I was very happy with the outcome and the atmosphere of the forest was unlike any other I've seen - especially during the rain which made it seem both unreal and authentic. The tour was an incredible and unforgettable experience, and a definite highlight of my travel not only in Yakushima but Japan in general. Your flexibility and calm attitude despite the heavy rain were truly admirable.

Wir haben eine Ganztages Tour im Shiratani Forest gebucht und Junichi war unser Guide. Leider hat es den ganzen Vormittag geregnet und ein Teil der geplanten Strecke war gesperrt. Das war aber kein Problem für Jun, da er die Gegend sehr gut kennt und wusste, wo man auch im Regen sicher unterwegs ist und viel sehen kann. Er konnte uns viel pber die Natur und die Geschichte Yakushimas erzählen. Wir sind am Nachmittag dann spontan an einem anderen Ort der Insel wandern gewesen und konnten dort sehr viele Rehe und auch Affen sehen. Am Ende der Wanderung hatten wir einen atemberaubenden Blick auf die Küste und die Insel. Wir können die Tour wirklich wärmstens jedem empfehlen, der einen tiefen Einblick in die wunderschöne Natur Yakushimas erhalten möchte!

Jun makes this hike once in a lifetime because of his knowledge for the area and Miyazaki (backed by 25 years doing the same hike), his respect for nature, his attentiveness in providing a campsite like kitchen to reheat lunch and local tea in a trail spot he specially created as a member of the nature preserve team, his attentiveness with photos of you during your tour, and his passion for sharing his knowledge with others. My wife and I cannot wait to hike with Jun again - maybe with our child in tow next time!
