My partner and I were married in the spring of 2023. That summer, we prepared and filed for my husband’s green card on our own. A year later, USCIS denied my husband’s green card on a technicality that was not our fault. We were promptly sent a “you must leave the country in thirty days” letter.
My husband and I went into full panic mode. I called, researched, and investigated scores of NYC attorneys, all of whom told us that they had no appointments available for at least two months (well past our USCIS deadline date). My immigration journey started when I was 7 years old, when my father was assigned to the US subsidiary of his employer. Fast-forward 11 years, and at age of 18, my parents and I, we received our permanent residency. There, my status stood for 3 decades, because I really didn't see the need to do anything about it.
