If you like authentic, honest Northern Italian food in a warm, sophisticated, but simple and cozy setting, served to you with a light but attentive touch, and you have never been to Osteria Carlina, I suggest you remedy the latter. They have two locations serving the cuisine of Torino. I personally adore the West Village spot. Check it out.
Overall good experience and food above expectations for Italian cuisine in the US. We ordered the pumpkin ravioli which was a bit disappointing: the pasta was undercooked and too thick for ravioli but the filling and sauce were good. Good service and wines.

I wanted to love this place. The ravioli was great, but the experience quickly unraveled. A server swooped in offering shaved truffle like it was parmesan—no mention this “garnish” would triple the tab.
The bill landed with a thud: $36 for ravioli, $65 for truffles. When I pointed it out, the staff shrugged and said it was “on the menu.”
Except I didn’t even have the menu at that point—it had already been taken away. Had I known the price upfront, I’d have passed. It’s a classic old‑school NYC slick trick that feels more bait‑and‑switch than fine dining.
Add the cave‑dark lighting and impossible‑to‑read menu, and the only thing luxurious here is the markup.
I get that running a restaurant in this city is tough and margins are tight, but hustling your guests isn’t the way to make it work.

It’s never our intention to leave any guest feeling blindsided by a charge. We do, in fact, strive to ensure our menu and pricing are clear and available for as long as needed.
That said, I do find it important to note that our team never intends to “hustle” anyone. We’ve been serving this community for over a decade, and our reputation is built on trust and quality. We apologize if the lighting or the pace of service made it difficult to see the pricing clearly at that moment.
We hope you’ll consider this an isolated misstep rather than a reflection of how we operate. If you have any further concerns, I’d be more than happy to discuss them directly and make it right however we can.
I understand the buzz now that I've tried it. The appearance enhances everything. I tasted unknown ingredients of exceptional quality. The staff employed there are among the most cordial and welcoming I've encountered, and they make every effort to ensure your night is enjoyable. This restaurant delivers a delightful encounter.

Saturday night, I made a reservation at Osteria Carlina West Village. We arrived 15 minutes early, took one look around, and decided it wasn’t for us.
Think tourist crowd with groups seated side-by-side on low chairs like a middle school cafeteria. We POLITELY told the host we’d like to cancel, he nodded, no problem. Yet we were still charged $80 for the privilege of not dining there.
When I called to clarify, their solution was to offer us a discount if we came back. I said politely, “Now I feel forced to dine, and I will not come under these circumstances.” and the staff responded "Sure, bye".
For anyone looking for an idyllic West Village night, this isn’t it. I understand if you charge for no-shows and late cancellations. We arrived early and very very politely informed the host that we’d like to cancel. We’ve never been charged in NYC for canceling in person, so this charge is unwarranted.
Sometimes being polite gets mistaken for being passive. So here you go — may this image scream on my behalf.

It was very ok. Mostly because it took 30 minutes after our reservation time to seat us, so admittedly the first impression of Osteria Carlina was pretty bad (they gave us prosecco as an apology, but we don’t drink prosecco). I was hoping the food would have made up for the wait but… the food was just good. It wasn’t incredibly delicious, but solidly good. Unfortunately not enough to leave a lasting impression. It definitely won’t be the spot that comes to mind next time a friend suggests we go to an Italian place for dinner.
Janneta—thank you for the candid feedback, and I’m truly sorry about the 30-minute wait past your reservation time. That’s not the first impression we aim to give. We also should have offered an alternative to Prosecco when you let us know you don’t drink it—point taken.
