The fee I quoted was based on the information provided and the full scope of work required to prepare and file a Capital Acquisitions Tax return. Even when a CAT return appears straightforward, there are still a number of checks that must be completed; reviewing documentation, confirming threshold positions, considering prior gifts or inheritances, ensuring valuations are appropriate, assessing reliefs and exemptions, considering tax efficiencies, planning for payment, and completing the return accurately under the self-assessment system.

I don’t compete on price; I focus on service, compliance and ensuring that clients fully understand what is being filed on their behalf. I take the time to go through the return with clients, answer questions, and make sure nothing important has been missed. In many cases, it is during these conversations that issues or reliefs come to light that would otherwise remain unnoticed. Given that Revenue can review or audit CAT returns years later, accuracy and thoroughness are extremely important to me. The cost of getting it wrong far outweighs the cost of getting it right.

All of this takes time, and I price accordingly. I also try to be transparent about pricing, which is why I publish indicative fees on my website so people can see upfront what to expect. I provide fixed quotes at the outset, as I did in your case, so potential clients know the exact cost and can make an informed decision. I fully understand that every client has different needs and budgets, and I always encourage people to seek quotes from other firms if they wish. That is entirely their choice, and I respect it.

Fees can vary widely between practitioners for many legitimate reasons, including approach, level of review, time spent with clients and the level of responsibility taken on. I don’t comment on any other firm’s pricing, as each practice sets its own fees based on its own processes and standards.

It is disappointing to see a ‘beware’ remark when I have been fully transparent regarding my pricing and approach, but I respect your right to express your view.
