I would like to share my experience from a visit a few months ago, as I believe it is important for the hospital to take this feedback into consideration.
I was very disappointed with my interaction with Dr. Akmal. I chose this hospital specifically to be treated by him, and the procedure was expensive. However, I only had the opportunity to speak with him for approximately 3-4 minutes in total.
For most of my time at the hospital, which lasted more than four hours, I was attended by his students or junior staff, who, in my view, did not appear sufficiently experienced. Dr. Akmal only came at the end, briefly spoke a few words that largely repeated what had already been said, and then left. It felt as though I never had a proper consultation with him.
Additionally, I could hear him engaged in conversation with another visitor in a nearby room for a significant amount of time. This gave the impression that his attention was elsewhere, while I was relying primarily on his students for care and communication.
Overall, I am very disappointed. This was not the level of care or communication I expected, especially given the cost and the doctor’s reputation. I hope the hospital will take my feedback seriously and consider improving patient-doctor communication and overall attentiveness in the future.
One Year Post-Op: Life-Changing Surgery.
Today marks exactly one year since my L4/L5 lumbar fusion surgery with Dr. Mo Akmal, and I can say with deep gratitude that it was one of the best decisions I ever made.
Dr. Mo’s surgical work was nothing short of impeccable. After a demanding year of recovery, I have a fully functional life again — so much so that I’m currently enjoying my pregnancy without a single worry about my back. That alone speaks volumes about the quality of his work.
Dr. Mo’s care and expertise throughout the entire process were outstanding. He was thorough, confident, and reassuring, and his surgical precision shows in my results: one year later, all screws and hardware remain perfectly in place with zero complications.
The only area where my experience fell short was the clinic’s post-operative administrative management. My case was complex, and I had a severe adverse reaction to the anesthesia. Despite this, I was discharged the same evening of the surgery — something I was not prepared for and that made for an incredibly difficult night.
For a procedure as serious as spinal fusion, I believe the clinic should have a protocol in place for more vulnerable patients: whether that means arranging a transfer to a hospital for overnight monitoring, or providing a home nurse for the first night. Being sent home just hours after major back surgery, especially when complications from anesthesia were evident, is the one aspect of my experience that I feel truly needs improvement.
That said, Dr. Mo Akmal himself is exceptional. His skill gave me my life back, and I would recommend him without hesitation to anyone facing spinal surgery.
I just hope the clinic refines its post-operative care process so that future patients don’t have to go through what I did on that first night.
I consulted Mr. Akmal following a sudden severe back pain which did not resolve and became gradually worse.
This was possibly initiated by a fall some years previously.
Following an MRI scan it was evident that this would not resolve without surgical intervention.
I was given a steroid spinal injection only 3 days after my initial consultation and having fully discussed the options decided to have surgery only 2 weeks later.
This was immediately transformative as I was pain free and had no requirement for analgesic medication after a couple of days.
Walking was slow for the first few weeks but the pace improved as did my posture.
I commenced gentle exercise after 2-3 weeks and now after 6 months I have returned to my regular exercise and gym regime including weight training having built this up steadily over that time.
The treatment I received from the London Spine Unit was fabulous in all aspects of pre surgical, surgical and follow up care.

Disappointing experience post-surgery
After a year since my surgery, the stiffness in my left leg remains, and I often experience a burning sensation in the soles of my feet. The video consultation with the doctor was unhelpful, and despite sending multiple reminders, my emails were ignored. Additionally, their YouTube videos seem misleading and do not reflect the actual outcomes. I regret choosing this clinic for my surgery and would advise others to consider different options.

I cannot recommend Mr Akmal and the London Spine Unit highly enough. From first contact, the service was exceptional, with rapid access to appointments, imaging, and a seamless pathway to treatment and surgery. Mr Akmal took the time to clearly explain my diagnosis and options before tailoring care to my individual needs. He successfully performed laser surgery on my cervical discs at C5/6 and C6/7, a spine epidural and facet joint injections. His expertise is truly unique and I am extremely grateful to Mr Akmal and his teams continued support to aid recovery and the outcomes achieved to date.
I cannot praise or thank enough the professional, caring treatment I received from My Akmal and his team.
After years of progressive pain in my arms, shoulders, neck and face , his diagnosis of my problems and treatment options brought welcome clarity.
I elected for day case surgery to replace/fuse the cervical discs and it delivered immediate relief. Post the operation I received daily calls to monitor my progress and ensure I had no issues.
As predicted a few weeks later I am virtually back to normal.

The ongoing march of aging once again saw me seeking help from Mr. Akmal and his Team at the London Spine unit.
Having had a very successful disc replacement & fusion surgery back in 2023, further deterioration in other joints resulted in needing another bout of disc replacements and fusion in my cervical spine, and cortex spacers in my lumber spine.
In late 2025 I embarked on another session of surgery and underwent the operation to replace, fuse and insert spacers in the offending areas of my Lumber & Cervical spine.
Both areas were treated in the same surgery and having entered at 07:00, I once again walked out at 18:00 on the same day.
2 weeks later the key hole wounds had healed I was off painkillers and well on the way to full recovery.
My experience again is a testimony not only to the personal skill and empathy of Mr. Akmal, but to all the people who enable such life changing surgery to happen, including the anaesthetist, surgical team, and ward staff.
I have had two consultations at the clinic, both with Dr. Akmal. I must say that I was immensely impressed, firstly, with the level of professional care provided. I was seen by the doctor, referred to an MRI, walked back to the clinic and was immediately able to discuss the findings, diagnosis and the treatment plan. Neck pain is a worrying condition, and the speed and professional care helped me a lot in alleviating my worries. More importantly, however, I found Dr. Akmal to be not only highly professional but also a very kind and compassionate man, ready and willing to listen with genuine desire to help. Thank you very much.

After 30 years of relentless back pain, Mo Akmal fixed it in a day! Excellent service from the hospital, all the way through the procedure from arrival to departure on the same day was managed perfectly. Thank you all for a great job. 4 big screws, 2 rods and a Coflex device sorted everything out. Amazing it was all done through a 60mm incision with no visible stitches. Healed with virtually no scarring. Excellent.

I tried making an appointment here and found the process rather difficult, the response times to emails was slow. I tried to call and could not get an answer. When I asked for someone to call me, they did not.
I had been suffering from lower back pain that had was progressively getting worse. Dr. Akmal performed a Transforminal Interbody Lumbar Fusion surgery.
His technical skill and precision were evident from the moment we discussed the procedure through to my recovery. The surgery was executed flawlessly, and the results speak for themselves.

Very poor service. I have not received my post-scan clinical letter, which was done over 3 months ago. I have emailed & rang on multiple occasions, and received the same shallow promise that it will be attended to immediately - it hasn’t been.
For the considerable cost of consultation and scans, the service is abysmal.
Dr Akmal changed my life
I was diagnosed with BERTOLOTTI SYNDROME in the Spring of 2023. Dr Akmal saw me and made me feel so seen and understood my chronic pain. I've been dismissed by so many doctors but truly felt heard by Dr Akmal.
He performed spinal surgery under GA August 2023 to remove the offending bertolotti bone.
After 15 years of intense pain and consistent analgesics.... I am pain free.
I can't tell you how much this means to me.
