One of the best group of humble professionals you will come across. From beginning to end, the best experience you can imagine.
I booked this trip thinking it would be one of the first and last opportunities I would physically be able to go on. It was a bucket list thing for my brother to actually do a legit backcountry hunt. I wanted to be able to share that experience with him while I was physically able to do so.
The crew blew our expectations out of the water! Knowledgeable and kind professionals. That’s the simplest way to put it.
Jaiden, Justin, Nick, & Caren made this the best experience and the support crew enabled some of the most hilarious memories I’ve had in a lot of world travels.
While my brother or I weren’t able to harvest a Bull, it was the trip of a lifetime and we will be back one day. Even if I have to be carried in on a wheelchair, I’ll be back. It is that awesome and the team is THAT amazing at making this a true bucket list adventure of a lifetime.
Much love to all of yall, especially Stanley!

One of a kind experience and one I’ve dreamt of for a long time. Outfitter is prepared in every way. Packing, equipping horses before hunts, all three meals of the day were amazing, beautiful scenery, and of course elk. The only thing you need to worry about is preparing yourself. This place has its on hive minded ecosystem and does not care who you think you are. Do research, get the right clothes, up the cardio, and get ready to embrace the wilderness. To Big R, the elk of my dreams.
Just returned from an unforgettable 7-day roving horseback trip deep into the Bob Marshall Wilderness with K Lazy 3 Outfitters, and my heart is still somewhere out there on the trail.
Our adventure kicked off when we landed in Missoula, MT, and spent our first night in Choteau. On Day 2, we made our way to the Benchmark trailhead out of Augusta and saddled up for Pretty Prairie Camp. From there, it only got better.
Day 3 brought a misty day ride as the rain rolled in, and we packed up and moved camp to Fish Camp—soaked to the bone but grinning ear to ear. One of the most incredible days followed: a 20-mile ride to the North Wall, climbing from 5,100 ft to over 7,100 ft. That lunch break? Shared with a curious mule deer doe who wandered right up to us.
The wildlife was unreal! Signs of bear and elk, a fox trotted through our camp, sandhill cranes (the loudest birds I’ve ever heard and they spooked every horse), a bald eagle, and rainbow trout flashing in the rivers.
Every morning started with the smell of strong coffee over the fire, and every night ended with a warm meal cooked by our incredible wranglers. We logged almost 70 miles on horseback in 6 days, and every step was worth it.
Coming back to a hotel room in Missoula (real bed, real toilet, the “luxuries”) felt almost wrong. Give me the sound of bells on horses, the rush of the river, and the smell of sweaty saddle horses any day!!
Montana is my favorite place on earth, and I’m already dreaming of going back with my family to sleep beside the river again. I’m so thankful I got to share this wild and beautiful experience with my best friend and my God-sent mama, Connie. What an adventure.
We did the Bob Marshall Wilderness with this outfit and had an awesome back country horseback ride. The wranglers were so helpful, knowledgable and took care of all our concerns and made out door life enjoyable. We had a great cook Karen who took great care of us, especially loved the "cowboy" coffee! And don't forget Stanley the camp dog was such a joy! Thank you again for the memories..................Kathy Brennan size M
BEST OUTFITTER OUT THERE!!!!
We went out on a 7-day horseback ride. We were blown away by the mountains, beautiful creek beds, and just that big blue Montana sky! It wasn't just the views that made this trip special. The crew was outstanding! They brought home to the mountains. They all work together to ensure you are having the best time possible. Some of my favorite times were just talking with the crew. It's not just a job for these people they care about you and the rest of you're party. Making sure that this trip is memorable to you. Overall I would do this a thousand times and it would never get old. Thanks for the good time K lazy 3!!
If you are looking for a true Montana backcountry horse pack trip, then this is the place to be. But if you want to be pampered & catered to, look elsewhere.
It took me a minute to post this review because of such a discrepancy regarding the ups & downs of the experience.
So, first the 👎.
My daughter & I booked this trip fall of 2023 for a June 2024 trip into the Scapegoat Wilderness. It was fairly easy to book, albeit they lost my deposit for a time. Questions were asked & answered reasonably fast. Everything from that point on however, was vague & incoherent to a large degree. It was like pulling teeth to even get the most basic information.(Like what time are you picking us up.)
The entire vibe I got was one of “we don’t really give a rip if you are happy with us or not”. Almost as if we were spectators on their private trip. At times, the crew seemed like they were annoyed by us, their paying “guests”. It was so odd.
Then there was the food. It was extremely bland. We get that all foodstuffs must be packed in panniers & loaded on mules, but I have been on week long river raft trips with foodstuffs also having to be packed for the backcountry & the menus were complex and varied. All it would take is a little effort & less bulk Costco prepackaged processed food. Our stomachs all hurt terribly. Each day lunch consisted of white bread, lunch meat, and a slice of cheese. Peanut butter and jelly could’ve worked great for an alternate, but when asked if this was an option, they had forgotten the jelly, (among MANY other forgotten items). One of us was yelled at when we woke up wondering if the coffee was going to be ready & also told “only 2 bacon strips!! Leave plenty for the crew!” We ended up “sneaking” apples & carrots from the camp kitchens because it was the only fresh food available to us. But, we were hungry & generally, there was plenty of food. The “last supper” was wonderful & we were giddy with excitement to see a simple dinner of fresh asparagus, baked potatoes, & beautiful steaks!
There were only 5 paying guests in our group & 3 of us had never really camped or set up tents in their lives. My daughter ended up helping everyone get their tents set up, without the crew offering to help. When all was said & done, we laid out almost 5 K ( EACH) for this trip ( more like 6 K if you count airfare hotels & gear) That’s serious $ for a 6 nite trip & I don’t know about you, but I expected MUCH better customer service for that amount of money.
👍There were so many aspects of this trip that were just sublime. Many of the K lazy 3 crew were just wonderful, polite & gifted people.
At the beginning of the trip the crew seemed incredibly disorganised, but they had a system that ultimately segued into a great working team. The stock used on the trip were well cared for & great mountain horses. I’m really glad that we are very experienced riders, because there was one of us who had never really ridden & we kinda had to take him under our wing. We loved the small group size.
I’m a ranch raised gal & everything that irritated many in our group actually was a plus to me. We were told that they would provide bear spray, but that was just BS, their explanation was a guest had sprayed one of their crew so never mind. ( really?)
The flowers & medicinal plants were epic & the view from the passes will be forever impressed on our hearts & souls. So in the end it was the “Bob” & the scapegoat wilderness that made the trip 100% worthwhile. I would do it again in a heartbeat, but will hire outfitters who actually give a darn about their guests!
From an experienced elk hunter who was there to hunt, not camp or go on a horseback trip. Horrible experience from start to finish. 1. They miss identified their own horse and we had a near miss experience with a poorly broke horse who tried to throw my uncle. And this was only the first of a series of problems with their horses. 2. Their tents were garbage. Ours had holes in the roof, gaping holes in the sides, and no zipper on the door. We had grizzlies in camp almost every night. 3. They talked so much trash about their prior clients. It was incredibly unprofessional. 4. We put forth a massive effort and didn’t see a single elk. No hunters out of the 6 in our group even saw a single elk, bear, or wolf but the outfitter kept pushing all of us to buy more tags. We hiked multiple days over 10-15 miles. Conclusion: This outfitter or possibly just his guides (he wasn’t in our camp the entire week) have no idea how to hunt elk. Their success rate for clients is in the low single digits and that’s generous. We only heard of two hunters out of nearly 50 to fill their elk tags this year. And again, most of us were talked into buying multiple tags for other game. Horrible, bordering on unethical in my opinion.
What an amazing experience!!!!! I just finished my 7 day backcountry elk hunt with Kenny Low and the K Lazy 3 Outfitters... I've never in my life seen people work as hard as these guys did!!! Such great down to earth peaple!!! The camp took me back to my memories of my childhood hunting camp where you hunt hard then come in for a great family style meal and swap stories and enjoy each other's company. The horses are the best I've ever seen!!!! Surefooted as can be going through the mountains and obstacles with ease!!!
Mules hauled in the equipment and was really cool to witness. Two in our party connected with bulls. We all saw some but hey that's hunting...I'm not even close to disappointed... it was the time of my life!!!
Highly recommend!!!!!
Make sure you do have good mountain hiking boots...lol. lesson learned for me!!
My dad and I just finished an Elk Hunt with Kenny and the rest of the K Lazy 3 Group and had an absolute blast. I can confidently say that it was a trip of a lifetime. Kenny, all of the guides, the packers, the cook, and everybody else that works behind the scenes to keep the wheels turning were wonderful and the hardest working individuals I’ve encountered. Kenny and his guides bent over backwards and used their lifetimes worth of knowledge to get us hunters on the elk. Two of us in camp were successful, I myself being one of them. Of course, filling my tag added to the experience, however, had I not filled my tag, it still would have been just as an amazing experience. I went in with the expectation to HUNT not to kill an elk, there are so many variables to hunting that no human can control. I would recommend anyone considering booking with K Lazy 3 for an elk hunt to absolutely do it!!! Keep in mind the hunt is going to be what you make it. You have to be willing and able to hike to where the elk are, and willing to put in the hours to hunt. I’m looking forward to my next hunt with KL3!!
Please take the time to read.
I just finished a 7 day hunt with Kenny Low and K Lazy 3. A hunt that I almost let the negative reviews on here ruin for me.
There are several things I’d like anyone that is considering K Lazy 3 to be made clear that pervious reviews throw shade on.
1. Kenny Low is a good man and one you can trust to go in to the back country with. He has the experience in that area and knows how the elk live in that area. I had the privilege of seeing his character on a couple of different occasions during our trip. Kenny did things for guest that I dare say no other outfitter would do.
2. There are elk in the Scapegoat, decent numbers based on what I saw, but you have to be willing to hunt them where they are. This is a wilderness hunt on public land. You have to hunt hard and be willing to move. The country is so vast and the elk can move a lot faster than a human can. To the ones that said different then blamed Kenny, guides, wolfs, bears, ect… the one thing we have in common is we didn’t fill our tags. Where I’m different is I can admit that I wasn’t as prepared as I should have been. Kenny and his guides hunted hard. 2 in our group shot bulls (one 350+), I saw bulls and sign. But it’s called hunting not killing for a reason. I booked my next trip as soon as we got back to the trail head.
3. Your experience is what you make of it. I wouldn’t hesitate a bit booking a hunt. It’s a wilderness hunt. It’s hard, but you’ll never hunt with better people. We had good food, good conversations, the best part my outfitter became my friend.
DON'T SCRATCH MY TRUCK
This trip was for people who want to ride horses through the mountains, hike and camp. Let me start by saying the communication leading up to the hunt was a 0/50. Asked questions multiple times and never got a reply, when we did get a reply it was over a week and half later. The excuse was they are in the mountains with no service. An outfit charging these rates should have someone available to answer emails/texts/phone calls. My airport pickup was almost 3hrs late, another hunter wasn't picked up until the day after, forcing him to "figure it out".
They had 16 hunters in 3-4 camps and nobody saw/heard anything. We were told leading up to the hunt that they had heard elk bugling for the last few weeks, also not to worry about getting mule deer tags because they would take care of it when we got there. When we arrived it was past the date to get mule deer tags and they told us to go spend another $400+ on bear and wolf tags because they had been seeing them. Not 1 hunter in any camp saw anything to shoot. The guides were great, did the best with what they had, told us they do no scouting and nobody in the outfit talks to each other in regard to where elk/game are or may be. When we got back and were unpacking we were the last ones to leave, talked to almost every hunter on their way out with the same story. Nobody helped us get out bags/equipment and when I walked over to Kenny to ask about grabbing it out of his truck he replied "yeah go ahead, just don't scratch my truck". Never asked how the hunt was or offered to help. This is a terrible outfit just looking to make money, DO NOT book a hunt with them.
*They seem to do well with fishing/camping trip review. Make sure to read reviews on what you're signing up for. TripAdvisor has more elk hunt reviews.
When scheduling this trip with Kenny over a year before we went, the communication was 0/10. We had questions that never got answered and their excuse was that "they were in the mountains", for the cost of the trip you deserve better communication. When we asked about tags (specifically mule deer) we were told to not buy ahead of time and they would take care of it when we got there. When we arrived we were informed that we could not get mule deer tags anymore because it was past the date to purchase them. There is NO CAMP COOK and NO CAMP SHOWER, that is only one camp, it is a lie on their website. There was zero scouting (told from the guides) and had absolutely no input of where elk may be when we arrived. Out of 4 camps, 16 hunters, over 20 miles deep into the backcountry, averaging 10 miles hiking per day, we were the only camp that saw 4 cow elk the entire trip in one day. We moved camps (2.5hr hour ride) to go "where the elk were", guides had not been there in 3 years. Overall fun trip, great camping, not an elk hunt. DO NOT SCHEDULE A HUNT WITH THEM. Check

K lazy 3 Outfitters is anamazing people to work with. If you are interested on doing a public land fair chase Elk hunt these people are who you want to go with. The meals were prepared by Coley who is a wonderful cook.
Kenny is a great guide and his knowledge of the Scapegoat wilderness area is amazing.
Their horses and mules are very gentle to ride and be around. If you are looking for a Back country Elk hunt to do this is a true Elk Camp.
My dad and I took a once in a lifetime, 7-day Chinese Wall trip with K-lazy 3 in July of 2023. We got to spend at least 2 full days basking in the views of the wall. Conn and the crew were excellent packers, and rolled with what the backcountry throws at you. Horses and mules were very well trained, making for easy days in the saddle even when they were long. Got a lot of time on the horse, as well as time off to explore, fish, and disconnect. This is a genuine Montana experience that you are not going to get at those expensive, fancy-shmancy lodges. Definitely be prepared to be out in the wilderness and pack for it. I appreciated everyone's kindness, positivity, and flexibility (and also the remarkable trout dip).
Not a real elk hunt. It's about expectations. If they had been honest with us and said we likely wouldn't even see an elk then I wouldn't have been so disappointed (no one in our camp saw one, the outfitter only harvested one elk this entire season). When we expressed our frustration, our entire group was cursed and ridiculed. I have hunted elk for years; I know what the habitat looks like that has had elk living in it--they are not a subtle animal. There are extremely few elk living in this vast wilderness, and not for years. I know because we rode and hiked for miles from sun-up to sun-down looking (almost 11 miles on foot first day, not to mention miles on the horses). This is why our guides had no idea where to look for them. There was definitely evidence of wolves, with them howling all around us.
They market the hunt as a 'bugle' hunt. Our cook (Kenny's mother, who was lovely and an excellent cook) said she hadn't heard elk bugling in years, due to the wolves.
If you are going for elk, then read only the elk reviews (not horse trip reviews--if I had gone just for a horse trip I would have been happy). Check the Better Business Bureau. Look at the harvest statistics for this unit. And ask the outfitter exactly how many elk they have harvested the last couple years (they told me they didn't know how many last year). All the evidence will reveal that this is not a good place to harvest an elk. I wish I'd done my homework.
Outstanding!!! My son and I went on the Continental Divide trip this summer. The crew was amazing. They treat you just like family from the minute you are personally picked up from the airport. Rode close to 100 miles (went on a side excursion fishing trip we will never forget) over 7 days. It is safe to say my son and I will be reminiscing about our trip for years to come.
