VERY poor customer support, false FAQS, unnecessary product
Think companies should realize that although most people do have a cell and computer to use with online companies, sometimes if a problem might be urgent i.e. Technical problems with ordering or package not arriving or being incorrect you DO need some type of phone support or at least live chat not just email or AI chat.
If a company prefers not to make it public as they want you to use their online FAQS or chat box first, they should at least have the option to call YOU if you want because the problem will just take to long to type or as in HR case they only have an AI chat or you don't want to wait for emails as you want to order but find out that you can't get in touch easily (they state that they have a text option, but I can't use it on my text app on my IPad as the texts from that can only go to another Iphone and it's to tedious to type (and hard to dictate) on the IPhone. My phone company Vis'ble doesn't usually make this public knowledge as they don't list their number but they WILL call you. Another The Clean Skin Club also makes their phone number hard to find and encourage emails but they DO have their phone number somewhere on their website so you know you can call if need be (as I said, companies don't have to encourage calling but just have it available.)
But other than the difficulty of communication this is the MAIN reason for the bad review. First instead of listing the FAQs where you can find it easily, the first thing you see is the "quiz" which takes a long time to fill out, and then after you fill it out, they tell you the cost and how many meals you got BUT THEY DO NOT TELL YOU WHAT YOU ARE GETTING (at least for the first order.)
IF you go back to the home page and scroll way, way down (which is why I didn't check the FAQS first as is my want) it DOES say that you can choose your meals, but why not the first time? I wanted to use them with the first time discount, but as they made it so difficult to try to contact them I gave up. My problem (except for the fact I wanted to give them my money was not so urgent) but what if someone didn't get their order or an ingredient was missing in something they were preparing, so that is why their difficulty in contacting them is important.
People should not be using these delivery companies, although these food companies have too much packaging affecting the environment, and unlike when I was young when only Banquet, Swanson or if you wanted to splurge Stouffers, were the frozen food companies you NOW have a plethora of frozen food choices now as well as prepared salads and your grocery's delis, there is NO reason to use most of these companies which is why many go under and this one SHOULd also.
Love
Pros:Awesome hard-working people and teammates, solid leadership, explosive growth, great culture, CEO is super transparent, a very well-oiled machine. Cons:No 401k match, that's about it
I mean, it's fine...
Pros:Work is easy if tedious Cons:Company communication is poor at best, with a distinct lack of organization among roles
Great place to work
Pros:budget for in-person get togethers, great team, good communication Cons:Goals are exciting but perhaps vague
Some Good/Some Not So Good
Pros:Unlimited vacation, free food, decent pay Cons:Culture was mixed...not a lot of happy leaders
Work you to the bone with no reward
Pros:Kind coworkers (not leadership) Grocery benefit Cons:This company is the definition of working you to the bone with no reward. Their strategy is to work employees to the bone, and then force them to leave and then interview for new employees. Rinse and repeat. Their compensation and compensation increases are lower than industry average, but they expect you to be a superstar. Even if you work harder, you won't be rewarded. Working overtime is the expectation. Once you learn that the work life balance is poor, and that leadership has poor attitude towards their employees, you leave, or they just discard you like a meaningless employee. They care more about the company bottom line than treating their employees well. Thanks for the hard work, here's nothing.
Upper Management Floundering, Toxic Culture Emerges
Pros:Good benefits and company perks. Good teammates (though most are gone now). Remote life. Cons:CEO + upper management's personal interests have tanked the once-positive company culture. It's disappointing to see Hungryroot stray so far from the values it began with. Morale is in the gutter after layoffs of loyal, important employees and their workloads have been divided up among the remaining staff with little to no process or direction. There is little to no diversity, which is strange for a NYC-born and based company claiming inclusion and transparency. Advice to Management:Get aligned and stick to something. Make retaining your employees and restoring a positive culture the top priorities.
Good salary and benefits… that’s about it
Pros:Remote work, good work life balance, salary and unlimited PTO. Cons:Poor leadership, lacking in vision, clarity and kindness. Advice to Management:Do the work to foster an environment of true collaboration and teamwork. Listen to your employees.
Every changing vision
Pros:Coworker are hardworking, intelligent individuals Cons:Upper management doesn’t have a clear company vision. Workload across departments is not sustainable
Hungryroot Honest Review: Not Worth It
Hungryroot Honest Review: Not really worth it.
1. I did not see a savings in food costs
2. Found the sauces and dressings to be either bland and one note, or just super heavy on a particular spice/flavor. Not balanced at all, makes it less than ideal.
3. Tried several different drinks in the form of protein shakes and smoothies, I liked 1 and that was the one that was just like drinking thick orange juice.
4. The snacks are very hit in miss. Some do taste really good, some taste terrible and some based on what they are made from and taste like, while not bad, should be forced to have a name that represents it correctly. I understand, it is a substitute for something, but it has to at least taste like that thing to carry the name.
5. Sometimes the meat was not representative of the pictures. Such as flat, squished 2 ounce salmon tail or shank fillet being sent when hot smoked salmon portion (different cut, with skin on) was ordered.
6. I did like the amount of fresh'ish vegetables. It was a really good quantity. I say fresh'ish because it's pre-cut and sealed.
7. I was ok with the 2 ounce meat portions per person, my husband who works a very physical job was not.
8. I did like that there were several options to chose from in each category.
9. I did like that they have specialty diet options for plant based, gluten free etc.
10. I did like that they include recipe cards.
Really supportive and positive, even if not perfect
Pros:The culture is really strong and supportive. Everybody is very open-minded and receptive to new ideas and ways to improve. Everybody genuinely cares about each other and the work that we're doing in the world. There aren't the all-too-common toxic politics or blame games. I feel accommodated and supported in the ways I need to do my best work. Cons:It's a lot of work. There's way more to be done than there's time to do. Pay is good, benefits could be better, especially the 401k match. Even though it's a remote-work culture, there's still a nexus of people in NYC that can create some FOMO.
I wanted to like hungryroot
I tried hungryroot since a great Merchant Offer appeared as one of my credit card benefits, and saw mostly good reviews. The good for me was delivery arrived on time, healthy food options are abundant, veggies arrive looking fresh, and plenty of veggie options. Also, convenient meal options that don't take long to prepare, and it's fun to try new things.
The cons for me were the veggies don't last long, so we'd have to be consuming them all right away. For example, asparagus was part of a dinner. We made that dinner within a few days of receiving our first delivery, and the asparagus' best by date was still 10 days away, but several stalks already went bad (tips wet and gross) so had to throw some away. Also - the asparagus were extremely thin, which we like when sauted or steamed, but the recipe was to roast them at 450 degrees for 25-30 minutes. They turned to hard sticks.
Another example is we currently have shaved brussels for a southwest meal. Their best by date is 2/4/24, but by 1/31/24 they are starting to turn color and I doubt we'll be able to use them.
Another con was they have an item on my "delivered" list, but it wasn't in the box. That was incredibly easy to fix, go online and select item, choose help, they have an option to add $6 to my wallet. The bad news is that's not a refund, it's a discount off of a future order. And I'm canceling, so losing that $6.
Another con for me was the very first meal they recommended was pasta with vodka sauce. Okay, sounds great. But between ordering and me receiving the delivery 5 days later, I see they have a RECALL on vodka sauce for specific lot numbers! I don't think the one received was part of the recall, but still created some anxiety before even getting any food.
We received grapes, and I thought oh these are nice, let's check out the supplier. The first thing on their website is their LISTERIA recall. Not on grapes, but on other types of fruit. Later I also saw that on hungryroot's website. Hopefully we weren't affected by either recall, but still makes me wary of the suppliers hungryroot chooses.
Another con for me was several items that sounded interesting were out of stock.
I did skip our second delivery to give us time to try all the things from our first delivery, which was easy to do, then just canceled before the second delivery.
I think it's a great concept, but I think I'd use it just as a here-and-there for certain things, but most of those things I can find cheaper and fresher at local stores. But here-and-there doesn't equate to the $65 minimum charge, $70 minimum for free shipping.
I'm sure there's a niche of folks who would really like this service. I'm glad we didn't pay the full $120 price for our one and only delivery.
Best job I’ve ever had
Pros:Great passionate people behind a great cause. The environment is fun and benefits are good. The CEO and management care about their employees happiness as much as efficiency. Cons:Ever evolving and fast moving. As long as you are great at what you do and can learn quickly, you’ll do well here. But you need to be willing to evolve and grow with the job. Advice to Management:Better health care coverage for dependants
Autocratic CEO pretends he cares about his people
Pros:Grocery credit, some legitimately smart and kind people Cons:-constantly changing vision from above -just let go 15% of staff (25 people), including some of the only real adults at the company -layoffs targeted those who ask smart questions and rewarded team members who blindly follow the poor leadership -84% of those laid off are women -little room for vertical growth, especially for non-digital team roles -false promises for future promotions and comp increases -no 401K match Advice to Management:Listen to your people, stop using “3rd party approval” as a reason to justify inequitable practices, stick with a vision
Poor Leadership at the Top
Pros:Good base salary, generous parental leave, talented teammates. Cons:Lack of honesty and accountability from executive leadership, seemingly random changes to direction of company. Intentionally deceptive business practices for the customer. Poor benefits, and little room for growth. Advice to Management:Listen to feedback given by employees instead of just trying to remove or gloss over negative feedback.
Messy and chaotic
Pros:Benefits and grocery credits are nice Cons:Negative and honest reviews have been flagged for removal recently. Too many egos allowed to run rampant. Double standards and favoritism are prevalent. Unchecked racism, sexism, and discrimination. If you care about your mental health, run away from here. Advice to Management:Required bias and DEI training. Practice the transparency you preach. Pay and reward your employees fairly.
Fantastic people and culture
Pros:The people really are the best and the culture is the best for a fully remote workplace I’ve seen Cons:All remote so less face to face opportunities
Nice People, disorganized company
Pros:My work is contract, and fairly regular Cons:The turnaround expectations are often unrealistic
it's a job
Pros:people are great and I love my teammates fully remote flexible time off (actually) Cons:overworked, work/life is slightly better now. a lot of burnout no career growth or promotions unless you know how to suck up to execs pay is mid and there are no raises unless you get promoted. no bonuses- only director level and above are bonus eligible no 401k match. don't let them tell you it's in the works!
