Dr. Tony Shen and his staff are the top of the top in treatment and patient care. I would give them 10 stars if I could. From the first appointment to the year anniversary of my double hip replacement surgeries…they are incredible. I’m so appreciative. I wish that I had made this decision sooner. From the initial appointment with Doctor Shen to the hip replacement everything ran like a well oiled machine. He was professional and his staff were amazing as well. I would recommend Dr. Shen to everyone I know for all their orthopedic needs.

My knee replacement was a long time coming. I had complete confidence in Doc Shen and his staff from first contact. All are responsive and very attentive. I knew what to expect and was instructed how to proceed.

Dr. Tony S. Shen, Ashvini Galagedara, Office Manager and PA Kaitlyn Merhen are all top notch. Dr. Shen is the best of the best. He answered all my questions and has excellent bedside manner. Ash is always attentive and quick to answer all questions, emails and phone calls. PA Kaitlyn was very caring, talking to me right before surgery. The recovery nurse was excellent. The Hospital for Special Surgery is the best hospital for Orthopedics. I had both hips replaced in 2024 and it was easy. I was walking around just 6 hours after surgery. I highly recommend Dr. Shen and his team, and I already have.
Needed a knee replacement and chose HSS, specifically Dr. Shen to do the procedure. Best decision! HSS was so welcoming and comforting. They were punctual to a tee and their post surgical care was GREAT! If I’m doing a review, it is impossible to leave out Dr. Shen’s office manager and surgical coordinator, Ashvini Galagedara. She is easily and by far the BEST assistant on the planet! Ashvini was so communicative and helpful throughout this whole process! She responded promptly (every time) with any and all questions/concerns I had. She still is there for me and this is six months post surgery! I wish I could give more than a 5 star review!
This is my second review for Dr. Tony Shen. A date for my TKR surgery was scheduled. The expert, professional and compassionate care I have received from Dr. Shen has been outstanding. He is a highly skilled surgeon who performed a very successful TKR on my left knee a little over six weeks ago. My new knee is flexible. I am able to perform all household functions independently. I am back to driving. I can walk a mile unassisted and I am 81 years old.
Dr. Shen does not rush you and he listens to you. His staff is also very welcoming and friendly in a professional manner. Ash is especially helpful and kind. I highly recommend Dr. Tony Shen.
I had polio as a child and in past 20 years my right leg has been getting weaker and in worse alignment and effects of post polio causing problems. I had arthroscopic knee surgery in 2005, foot fusion in 2014 and in past year my knee instability from hyper extension and valgus knee made even walking a risk. I went to a Dr in NC who rejected knee replacement and hinge knee replacement and told me my only option was a knee fusion ( never being able to bend my knee again). My husband felt contacting HSS was a last option for treatment. I made an appointment w Dr Shen in December 2023.
He explained that he felt a hinge knee replacement would stabilize my knee and said he would present my “ complex case” to a panel of HSS doctors in January 2024. They agreed that hinge replacement would help me. I had my surgery in May. Throughout this process, Dr Shens office ( especially Ash) have been so supportive and always ready to provide guidance and sending paperwork for insurers, other doctors, etc. Ash is so responsive and professional to any request.
Dr Shen takes time to explain everything in detail and to encourage and answer questions the patient has. You never feel hurried or discouraged during appointments and even personal phone calls. HSS is the best hospital I’ve ever been in— they are a smooth operation and the staff are very attentive and proactive. God bless Dr Shen, Ash and HSS for their care and expertise to help their patients— especially to patients who were told “ there’s nothing that can be done” to help you…
I was referred to Dr Tony Shen by my retiring orthopedic surgeon, and after we met, I knew immediately that I wanted him to perform my total knee replacement. Dr Shen was very caring and in tune to my pain and needs. He has one of the best bedside manners I have come across. He will spend the time explaining the process, listening to your questions and responding to your concerns. My recovery from the surgery was much quicker and less painful than previous knee surgeries. Dr Shen is a great surgeon, and I am honored to recommend him to friends and family because I know they will be in great hands.
I was referred to Dr. Shen when my orthopedic surgeon had a medical emergency. I had just completed the pre-assessments for hip replacement surgery, and Dr. Shen and Ash were able to schedule my surgery within a month so I would not have to redo the testing. Dr. Shen took the time to speak with me about potential solutions and outcomes: we spoke for longer than I ever had spoken with my previous surgeon in multiple (combined) visits.
My right hip replacement surgery could not have gone better: I was comfortably on my feet in days, and completely pain free for the first time in years. The surgery and my recovery went so well that we scheduled my left hip replacement for exactly two months later.
The entire process has been awesome. Ash was able to get me scheduled for x-rays, testing, surgery, and follow-up in the most efficient manner I have ever experienced with any medical facility. Dr. Shen’s office runs very smoothly, and the entire staff is pleasant and accommodating. Big shout-out to Ash and Shyh, both of whom made me feel like family on every visit.

If the results had not been as successful when Dr Chen replaced my left knee, I would still feel the same because deep down I know I received the best of care at all phases of the treatment.
In 2014, I incurred a sports injury to my right knee, x-rays indicated that I had lost a considerable amount of cartilage in my medial compartment. In 2022 x-rays showed the complete absence of cartilage in that same section. The lateral compartment had healthy cartilage and I had no pain in the patella femoral compartment. I soon visited with two orthopedic surgeons in two different Hospitals one wanted to do a total knee replacement and the second surgeon wanted to make the decision in surgery.
I was not satisfied that they were offering the best treatment option for my partial problem. I new that HSS was the "gold standard" in orthopedics. I was highly recommended to Dr. Shen on the basis that he will do minimally invasive surgery if appropriate. My first contact was ASHVINI GALAGEDARA she was so compassionate and comforting, and I knew then that I was making the right decision. On April 1st I had my first consultation with Dr. Shen. The first question he asked was "where is the pain" I pointed to my menial section. He said that is often the best diagnosis of where the problem is. After x-rays and further knee manipulation he confirmed that I would be an excellent candidate for partial knee surgery.
Dr. Shen performed the surgery on April 25th 2024 using the Mako protocol . In non-clinical terms my menial section was a "mess" with a lot of loose material floating around. He took his time and did the custom implant and now I'm doing the rehab. Dr. Shen is not only a gifted surgeon he is also a skilled communicator. I had a question prior to surgery and he called me to answer, with patience, my questions. Dr. Bertrand was the anesthesiologist in the OR and all I can say is I woke up feeling terrific. I apologize for the length of my review. But when you see Dr. Shen you can see that he is part of a culture that elevates every professional with HSS.
I had a partial knee replacement in February 2024. After a problem with my original doctor Dr Shen stepped up and agreed to perform the surgery. His office manager Ash was just fantastic putting together everything that needed to be done in a short period of time. Dr Shen reached out twice to me in the first 24 hours to see how I was doing. I’m very happy and fortunate that I was able to get Dr Shen.
I had an excellent experience with Dr. Shen and the head of his office staff, Ms. Ash. I am 66 years old and Dr Shen performed a robotically assisted total knee replacement in January of 2024. I appreciate that he went into surgery open-minded about some aspects of the treatment so that my operation was the best scenario for the condition of my knee and surrounding bone. After surgery Dr Shen checked-in with me regularly, and his office responded quickly when I had questions. My recovery has gone well and after 8 weeks the level of pain is minor knee stiffness and muscle soreness and it feels better and stronger every day. I highly recommend Dr Shen for knee replacement surgery.

I saw Dr. Shen today after a hip fracture and replacement and knee injury on a vacation in Europe. He has an easy smile and is an excellent communicator, without medical jargon.
