Having previously had a bad experience with our main bathroom and downstairs WC (with a different company), we were slightly nervous of how our ensuite project would go, even though we'd had a personal recommendation about how good Lewis and his team were.
Our faith in the recommendation we'd had, soon proved to be justified.
From the first site visit, we can only say we were very happy with both the pre-installation and the installation service. The finished ensuite, which was enlarged from how it was, and included, joinery, electrical and plastering works as well as the plumbing and tiling (all coordinated by Lewis and his team) was finished to a high standard that has exceeded our expectations. Jack (Lewis's) "main man' on site has provided us with a top quality finished installation.
At the same time as our ensuite project Hartleys also installed a new hot water cylinder and associated plumbing - that work also went well.
Would definitely recommend Lewis and his team and as and when the need arises, we will certainly be calling Lewis again.
Had Harley's out for an emergency repair. The initial response time was excellent but the subsequent repair was extremely poor. Having had a different company out to service the system they found live wires incorrectly connected and incorrect parts had been used to complete the repair. Do not recommend using this company.

Hi James,
Thank you for your feedback.
As this is the first time we've been made aware of this issue, and given that the work was completed over six months ago, could you please forward us more details to our office? We’d appreciate any documentation or evidence you have so we can review what materials may have been used incorrectly.
Looking forward to hearing from you.

Unfortunately, my experience with Hartleys Plumbing & Heating York was extremely disappointing. I contacted them for a quotation to install a new bathroom — not a straightforward fit, so it required proper time and consideration. Lewis came out to assess the job but was at the property for less than five minutes. He didn’t take a single measurement, wrote nothing down, and simply listened briefly to what I described before leaving.
Before he left, I asked when I could expect the quotation. As he walked away, I had one of two thoughts: either he was so experienced he didn’t need to take notes or measurements — or I was never going to hear from him again. Unfortunately, it was the latter.
I followed up multiple times and spoke with Kate in the office, who was courteous and clearly doing her best. She repeatedly apologised and assured me it was being chased, but the quote never came. Eventually, she admitted she didn’t know why he wasn’t getting back to me and didn’t know what else to say. I pointed out that a basic level of professional courtesy — a simple message to say he wasn’t pursuing the job — would have saved considerable time and frustration.
What he may see as acceptable is, frankly, both unprofessional and discourteous. While he was avoiding the job, I was stuck waiting to receive his quote so I could compare it with others and move forward. Because I didn’t have all the quotes I needed, I wasn’t able to schedule the work — and by the time I gave up and started again, other plumbers’ availability had changed. A simple quotation process turned into months of unnecessary delay.
If there were aspects of the job that made it unsuitable or off-putting for him, that’s entirely understandable — but a professional should be able to explain that openly. That kind of conversation gives the customer clarity and shows respect. Avoiding it altogether only highlights a lack of emotional maturity, and suggests that despite the branded vans and outward appearance of scale, the business isn’t yet equipped to handle the demands of larger, more complex projects.
I later discovered the company was formed in 2022 and that Lewis would have been 22 at the time. Great for being young or ambitious — but with growth comes responsibility. If you want to be taken seriously as a professional business, you need to demonstrate reliability, communication, and self-awareness. None of those were present in this experience.
Based on this, I wouldn’t feel comfortable recommending

First class service attended earlier on the due date. Lewis refitted the pipes to new. The guy prior was not a plumber but a butcher who worked for MFI and built the kitchen very badly. If and when I need a Plummer I have this company on my contacts. Thanks Kate for your assistance snd once again thank you Lewis the Plummer.
