We’ve been to a LOT of wine tastings. Though this one may appeal to some folks, we found it too removed from traditional tastings to be very useful or enjoyable to those looking for a serious wine tasting experience.
This place was loud and too bustling to clearly hear the host or others in your party - much less conduct a thoughtful evaluation of a given wine.
The place is overly driven by technology. Though climate controlled wine dispensers have become fairly common, the addition of dozens of computer tablets has gone overboard. Rather than tasting and discussing a wine with a person, you’re going head to head with a program. What YOU see, smell or taste in a wine has been replaced with what someone else’s opinion - programmed into a computer program - is “right” and YOUR impressions of a wine’s qualities is “wrong” - and needs to be corrected. 1984 anyone? Clockwork Orange?
Though the food pairings might have been thoughtful, the noise level in the place made it near impossible to hear what was being said.
While some people were trying to be part of a wine tasting and food pairing learning experience, others - who had finished their scheduled tasting - remained and freely dove into to the tasting samples like hovering vultures. (Completely ignoring the toothpicks and diving into cheese trays with grasping fingers.)
Finally - this establishment has no bathroom(!) It “shares” a one-holer bathroom with the busy restaurant next store. This makes for an uneasy and cramped wait for your turn in line at the shared toilet.
Though the staff if friendly and helpful, this experience is more a raucous cocktail party than a place to seriously taste wine. If that dynamic fits your mission, more power to you, but we won’t be back.

Dear Val,
thank you for visiting us and for taking the time to share your experience.
Allow me to add a detail that helps to better contextualize your visit on October 4th: it was the Feast of San Petronio, the patron saint of Bologna. The festive atmosphere and the unusually high number of visitors inevitably made the environment livelier than usual. Under normal circumstances – as confirmed by over 500 positive reviews – Bottega Botlé offers a calm, welcoming, and attentive setting.
We’re sorry that, on that particular occasion, you weren’t able to fully enjoy the experience.
Regarding the use of tablets, we would like to clarify that they in no way replace human interaction. Technology, as many of our guests point out, is an integral part of the Botlé experience, designed to offer an innovative way to interact with wine and its stories, always accompanied and guided by one of our specialists.
On that special festive day, we sincerely regret not having been able to convey the true spirit of Botlé at its best.
We truly appreciate your kind words about our staff and hope you’ll visit us again on a quieter occasion, to fully experience our wine tasting journey and share with us, in the best possible way, our passion for wine and gastronomy.
Warm regards,
Gaetano Lanza and all the staff at Bottega Botlé

Gentile Val,
Ci spiace!

Bottega Botlé is an incredible experience. My family and I are very novice to medium wine enjoyers. The staff was incredibly friendly in explaining how to try the wines, the balsamic vinegar, all the snacks, and even some of the liquors! The staff took a bottle of liquor off the shelf so we could try it! Anyone visiting Bologna should come to try this hidden gem. Allow 1-1.5 hours to get the full experience!
