This was first time ever hiring a moving company and it was my absolute worst nightmare, starting with the fact that I got a price for $3400.00 dollars over the phone and then when the moving subcontractor showed up, one of them was going over the paperwork with me while the other guy was secretly taping up empty boxes and counting them as more fees without my permission or knowledge, before I knew it I had another $2,000 additional to my original contract, so not only did I had to leave something I had to go back to another state and rent a U-Haul because they were trying to rip me off, I just couldn’t believe that a professional moving company would allow these guys to come into your place and start doing so many things unethical and unprofessional there was no conversation about any extra expense before they started doing the work or getting my approval for the extra additional expense, so after going back and forth for about an hour we finally agreed to moving forward with the big items. Then they were supposed to deliver my furniture 9am on Saturday the didn’t show up until 6:11pm . I have multiple pictures and videos of how these guys operate and it’s a scam to rip you off when they know that you’re in a tight schedule. But I’m filing a complaint with the better business bureau I don’t think they should be in business and most definitely pulling scams like this isn’t the way to do business at .
Up until this moment I was happy with the way my plans for my move were turning out they came on the day as expected which I was very nervous about but it happened. I was happy with the guys that came and packed and loaded my stuff. At this moment I am unsure when I am going to get my items delivered as my stuff is still sitting somewhere in Maryland and its coming to Fl… cannot get an answer as to what the process is except “ I will get an update Monday” but yet they are concerned with sending me my invoice for a final payment…… Can I get my stuff first or at least an answer in when my stuff will be coming ?? Communication with staff since booking has been very shifty not a helpful as they were when they were trying to get me to sign contract.
After doing moves with the military for 25 years, I can say that David Thornton with American Van Lines provided the absolute BEST service we have ever experienced in our move from Texas to Pennsylvania. He was always available and communicated regularly during the process of transporting our household goods. He also hired first class packers and loaders at both locations. If you need a driver to organize your move then David Thornton should be your first choice! An A+++ experience.

I'd give less than zero stars if I could. The entire process was a nightmare - capped off by the truck being 10 DAYS LATE TO ARRIVE. Know how hard (and expensive!) it is to move across the country without your stuff for 10 days? The customer service was HORRENDOUS. People were rude, uncaring, unresponsive, unwilling to help - just pretty nasty in general. They charged a fortune and offered to comp us a measly amount for the "inconvenience". It was truly one of the most distressing events of my entire life.
The driver was a nightmare to deal with - zero compassion or understanding. From the first conversation to the end of the transaction he had an attitude. He literally had me in tears.
None of the movers spoke any English at all. So when I told them to not touch certain boxes, they just nodded - and then moved all those boxes anyway. Including our air mattresses so we spent the first night in our new home sleeping on the floor.
No one would provide me ANY answers. Where the truck was, what happened to it, why is it taking so long? They had no satisfactory answers and just kept repeating the same thing over and over - you're scheduled for the 14th you're scheduled for the 14th you're scheduled for the 14th. No help, no apology, no answers.
I finally got the name of a supervisor who said she'd personally check in with me - and never did.
I have PAGES AND PAGES of interactions I could retell, but I'll save you all the time. DO NOT USE AMERICAN VAN LINES.

So far so good!! Customer Service is top notch! Our rep Rick Peveler went above and beyond going through a detailed list, scheduling follow up calls and answering all of our questions! They have a great BBB rating and I addressed various reviews. Also addressed the use of subcontractors which they don’t use. Everyone used start to finish are employees of the company, no 3rd party vendors. I’m excited and relieved all st the same time that our move is in good hands! Rick, thank you again for everything!

If I could give zero stars, I would. This company is a textbook example of moving scams and bait-and-switch tactics. I wish I had read the reviews before booking because my experience matches all the horror stories. Moving is already a stressful and emotional time, and you expect your movers to alleviate that stress—not make it worse. Unfortunately, this company did the opposite. The initial sales process was smooth and convincing. They assured me that box estimates were included in the quote and that everything would be handled. I even paid extra for full packing service, thinking it would simplify a big move. That was a huge mistake. Communication was nonexistent. Eighteen hours before my scheduled move, I called for an update and was bounced between four people before being told my move was delayed by three days. After pushing back, they rescheduled and promised 3–4 movers would arrive Saturday or Sunday. The next day, I got a call at 12:30 saying movers would be there in an hour. When they arrived, the subcontractor immediately said the job was underestimated—and there were only two movers, not four. After five hours of hard work, they told me they wouldn’t load anything unless I signed an addendum for an extra $6,500. We were essentially held hostage. To make matters worse, we discovered that although the quote included packing two dressers, it didn’t include the three suitcases of clothes from those dressers. And even though we paid for packing, the boxes they packed weren’t included in the shipping cost estimates. This felt like outright fraud. They lure you in with a great salesperson who claims box estimates are automatic and included—then trap you with hidden costs. The final cost jumped from $5,805 to $12,800—a staggering 120% increase. That’s not a small mistake—that’s a deliberate tactic. The only positive? The two subcontracted movers were professional, kind, and worked incredibly hard despite being caught in the middle of this mess. --- Bottom line: Moving is stressful enough without being exploited. This company uses misleading quotes, poor communication, and high-pressure tactics to squeeze more money out of customers. If you’re searching for a reliable moving company, avoid this one at all costs. Read the reviews, protect yourself from hidden fees, and don’t fall for the bait-and-switch.
