I had no luck in the Butchers finding new glasses, the Bakers had been the same. I should've seen it coming really. It's not easy when Vision Express and SpecSavers are distant and less discounted than other opticians, possibly..
But if you're in the Crook, County Durham area and you need glasses, forget the Butchers and the Bakers and visit Walkers .
A professional, skilled, fun and friendly local team. I've had frames and lenses through mail order from the US and EU. Ordered as the styles are more appropriate for me massive heed and love of Morecambe & Wise, not necessarily, in that order.
Walkers were able to recoat lenses VE and SS wouldn't handle and Walkers did a grand job. My advice, support this business and stay local.

I had a lovely experience at Walkers Opticians in Durham today. A lovely lady named Julie helped me change my preconceptions on independent Opticians. She answered all the questions I had.
I came away with a lovely bright pair of glasses which reflected the way I was feeling. We looked at all the options for the prescription I have. Yes they were a little bit more expensive but the offered a good range of prices and the bold colours I was looking for.

Had a awful experience with vision express recently- booked an appointment with them travelling an hour to get there (Durham branch) paid to park my car (over £3 )walked half a mile across across the city from the parking area ,to be told on arrival that there was no optician there to do my eye examination!
“It is what it is “ said the male assistant who obviously couldn’t have cared less ! So a full morning off work wasted !
Rang up vision Express to complain, and was booked in at their Hartlepool Branch about a week later ( I didn’t want to go back to the Durham branch because of the terrible attitude of the members of staff ). I arrived there for my midday appointment and was kept waiting without any acknowledgment for about 20 minutes by the 2 women who worked there, and not even told to take a seat
When I was finally taken to the eye examination room I was told that the machine for part of the eye test procedure was not working ! And without an apology ! (They didn’t even know when it would be working again) So they had let me come through for nothing - no message from them to tell me not to attend or rebook for another appointment- so just another wasted journey costing me time and money! - I walked out feeling both angry and disgusted with them.
I Rang up vision express complaints department again and told them in no uncertain terms what I thought ! ( I never received any further response or an apology from them and they just blanked the situation and complaint )- Vision Express used to be ok place to go to ( and I had been a customer with them for over 25 years) but you can definitely tell that standards there are falling , and the way that they operate now is truly appalling !
So still needing my eye test and some new glasses I decided to give Walkers Opticians a try - what a difference - it was like going from night to Day ! The super nice and helpful Gentleman Optician did a very thorough examination on my eyes and I felt very confident and comfortable with his ability.(plus all the equipment there was working unlike Vision Express! ) and I was happy with the time and care taken.
when choosing my glasses afterwards, the very charming lady who attended could not have been more helpful, with no sales pressure at all - and I selected 2 pairs of top Italian designer frames for half the price from what I used to paying at Vision Express!
So to say I was very pleased would be an understatement !
To conclude, - I was very impressed with Walkers Opticians, the quality of their products and standards of service and I most definitely 100 % recommend them ! And will certainly be returning to them again !
