Service: 3/5. The waitress is the due collector for one drink per menu and just met that expectation. Overcrowded to a degree that people behind me had to ask to move my chair.
Music and musicians: 5/5. The in-house band includes virtuosos for oboe, trumpet, trombone, bass guitar.
Atmosphere: 1/5. The staging area is so small that solo artists don't have space/route to walk up to the front; the venue is ill-shaped acoustically speaking: bar sound/chatter overshadows the band leader's introduction in-between songs, and the speakers over-emphasize the brass instruments. The overall experience is akin to driving a Lamborghini engine (the band) inside the body of a Toyota Corolla (the venue's acoustics). Look into the future and actually design a venue that provides a reasonable acoustic experience to all patrons.
Village Vanguard, chosen after agonizing over many jazz clubs in New York. I made a reservation online, and if you tell me the name of the reservation, I will show you where I am. You could order drinks and enjoy the performance. Photography and video recording are prohibited during the performance period. It was great to see a high-quality jazz performance.
I attended Dave Douglas’s show during the first Friday set.
At the end, I wanted to buy two CDs, but unfortunately I didn’t have any cash, and the only alternative was Venmo, which I cannot use because I’m not from the USA.
I left the Village Vanguard to get cash and came back hoping to buy the CDs, which I really wanted.
When I arrived at the door, the guy controlling the entrance told me it was not possible to go in just to buy the CDs. I explained that I would wait until the end of the set so I could buy them. He told me he would not let me in under any circumstances.
I then asked if I could give him the money and have him bring me the two CDs. He replied that he would not allow me to buy the CDs in any way. He was rude for absolutely no reason, even though I did everything I could to buy the two CDs before returning to my country.
A historic venue and a great performance — all ruined by a guy working the door who himself did not deserve to be at the Village Vanguard.
