We were there on Sunday April 26th, for a Private overnight. We decided to do the guided paranormal tour that morning. Our tour guide was Kayleigh (spell it however you want to)! The tour was great. She was a fantastic tour guide and told us several things that we didn't know. If you're up that way for a private overnight, I would suggest doing the paranormal tour, and take notes. Also the overnight ladies, Brandy and Jess are the best!

Took the 90 min historical tour/really well done Whitney
This is the real deal, so be prepared for history and open to what you will witness Be sure if you decide to take paranormal night tours that include the 4th floor. For us, it was knowing what transpired since the 1800’s into present day. Hard to imagine how patients were treated in comparison to medical technology available. There are burial grounds that we later learned—-one is hilly mound behind the institution. There is no elevator, so be sure you can handle old staircases and take water to stay hydrated for 90 minutes. “Portal to Hell” -Episode 6 confirms what we were told on the tour in daytime. That even pushed these professionals to be amazed when interaction using their equipment and psychic. When this opened to public it was housing 250 patients, when it closed it was 2500 with 1:65 ratio of nurse to patients. Our tour guide, Whitney was trained by their longest employee.
Easily one of the best tours I've ever taken.
I knew this would need to be part of our WV itinerary as soon as this place's existence became known to me while I was planning a possible trip. Just the name is enough to grab you but it certainly delivers.
The thought of doing a paranormal tour intrigued me but I was also interested in the history. We arrived at 2:20 and were informed the paranormal tour wasn't starting until 4. Did we really want to wait until 4?! The very nice man provided descriptions of all of the tours and the paranormal one just sounded so interesting that it didn't seem like a real debate.
We bought tickets and were considering how we would kill time but it turns out, they have a very interesting museum about the place's history on the first floor that someone entertained my ADHD ass until 3:55. It was incredible.
As if that couldn't get any better, the tour was absolutely fascinating. We were taken throughout the museum and our guide, Brad, was impressively knowledgeable about the place, answered every question in exquisite detail. The only disappointment was that instead of experiencing anything paranormal, we were just told stories about things other people have experienced. Don't get me wrong, this was captivating but I was hoping to experience something for myself which I did not.
An absolute must visit if you are interested in this kind of shit and are anywhere remotely in the vicinity.
I was talked into doing the VIP tour and it was worth every second. Greg was an incredible tour guide. Not just smart and funny, but very considerate of every person in our group. Seeing everything inside the hospital was so interesting and the atmosphere of it was very solemn and historical. I loved it

Museum portion was very interesting, we went on two tours , the 4 floor historical which I highly recommend. We learned a lot from Nick who guided us through all 4 floors of the main asylum explaining various historical facts and stories, The second tour we did was of the Criminally Insane building which was an intimidating prison like building, Jeremiah who took us on our second tour was a character and I could tell he was deeply invested in the lore and facts of the asylum overall learned a lot from him aswell, I don't know when I will visit next but thanks to Nick and Jeremiah I'm deeply interested in a return visit for other areas we didn't see. The ladies at the gift shop and ticket counter were also very friendly sadly I didn't catch any of their names

We were not sure what to expect when we approached this 19th Century fortress. The Asylum offers several different tours. If you really want to understand the undertaking of the founding of the State of West Virginia and their purposeful approach to help those in need of mental heath and sanctuary take the 90 minute historical tour. There is more to this place than the vivid pictures your mind creates when it hears the name. It is both beautiful and tragic simultaneously. Jon was our tour guide. Hevwas top notch. Not only is he a vast wealth of knowledge but he brings his personal experience about this place as he grew up locally. Cant recommend taking a tour rnough.

I didn't expect much going in, thought just another old building. I was so wrong! The history of this place was very interesting plus the paranormal aspect was interesting plus the guide Kaylee was very knowledgeable and she had her own proof. I not going to say more you just need to come and check it out yourself. Trust me it will not disappoint.
