Unplanned, we saw the sign driving by & popped in. Awesome guide Asha made it fun as she explained the history. Great lady, we shared many laughs. We did the fermented shark & black death shot - a once off bucket list item we never dreamed we do in a cave!

Beautiful scenery and experience stepping in to part of Iceland's past and learning about the history of life there 100 years ago. Well worth the stop for a fantastic time! :D

Ca 100 Jahre alte. Primitive Behausungen, in den Stein gehauen. Beeindruckend!

Reply from Caves of Laugarvatn 2026.05.11
Hi Marie, thank you for the feedback.

To clarify, the full experience always takes around 25 minutes. This includes the walk to the caves, a guided talk filled with fun facts about how the family lived and survived here, and free time to explore or ask our guides questions. Not sure how you managed to do all that in 10 minutes!
Regarding the price, 2,000 ISK is very low by Icelandic standards, it barely gets you a coffee and a cinnamon bun at most places. We also do not charge for parking, while many other sites in the area charge around 1,000 ISK just for the car. Here, your entry fee covers a guided historical adventure and the maintenance of this unique site.
We’re sorry it wasn't for you, but we wish you a great trip in Iceland!

You are welcome to contact me if you have any suggestions at kristofer@cavesoflaugarvatn.is

Best regards.

The owner Kris was exceptionally welcoming. It's not overcrowded at all and right in the Golden Circle area. He and his brother are preserving a true gem of icelandic history. It's a real experience to hear the story of the caves over candlelight with fermented shark and icelandic spirit for however dares to try. You can really feel the peacefulness of this place that made people live here with their family. Completely worth it 10/10!!!

Thanks a lot for the kind words! It was a pleasure having you. We’re glad you felt the peace and history of the place, and of course, that you survived the shark! Safe travels, Kris.

Well worth a visit and only a short distance off a main route. Very friendly and informative guide, full of interesting details about the house built into the caves and the families that had lived there.

This place was a refreshing experience while driving around the golden circle. Tucked away between the folds of layers of lava, this old cave house looks like it could be inspiration for children's story book illustrations. The brothers, owners and operators are very welcoming and helpful. I took their recommendation for restaurant nearby Lindin restaurant which did not disappoint.
Reply from Caves of Laugarvatn 2026.05.12
Thanks for stopping by! Glad you liked the 'storybook' vibes of the cave and found the recommendation for Lindin useful, it’s definitely one of our favorites too. Safe travels on the Golden Circle!
