Went on an amazing Icelandic horseback riding tour with Thor hestar. Let me start by saying that if you’ve never been on a horse before, you’ll be fine. My Honey had never been on a horse before and he had a great time. Also, these are Icelandic horses, they’re way more docile than standard horses, these horses were sweet as could be, AND they were lower to the ground.
Our experience started out with us getting to spend some up close and personal time with the mares and new foals. There were scritches and pats and loves for all the horses.
Next we got assigned horses based on experience (my Honey, never having been on a horse in his life, got Pinocchio, who was a gentle baby). We then got a lesson in how to hold the reins and control the horses (this gave us the opportunity to connect with horses). *let me add a note here to wear appropriate shoes as this is a horse farm and there is the very likely possibility that you will encounter their droppings, also there are flies that bite, so long sleeves and pants are also a good idea.
Then we went on a ride across the Icelandic countryside. It was beautiful and peaceful and all of the adjectives that you can think of that lend themselves to a transcendent experience with a majestic creature and amazing views. It felt like one of those moments that lasted forever but also that you never wanted to end, like you were connected to the pulse of this land of fire and ice.
For those of you who are all about the pictures, there were plenty of photo ops and the gait of the horses and their docile personalities made it very easy for me to take pictures along the ride. Also the guides made stops where they took pictures for you. This was something that people of ages and abilities would enjoy.
