These guys are amazing! We went on a windy day and the ocean was really rough. Instead of turning back, these guys pushed through and went beyond our expectations to find a whale. When we finally found the whale, they waited for the perfect opportunity and we ended up swimming so close with the baby-whale with her mum just beneath us. We will never forget this!

Sortida 15/09/26, tarda.
A whale tour with 12 people = a lottery. Regulations allow 6 swimmers per guide and boat, and Tama Tours takes 12 split into two turns. On a tour of about 4 hours, where much of the time goes into finding the whales and waiting for the right moment, one of the two groups is left with almost no chance. This time it was us. After almost 3 hours searching for the perfect moment, we finally found a mother and her calf resting at the surface. The other group went in first, and we waited on the boat for 50 minutes. When we could finally get in, the whales had already moved on and it was all a rush. They chose the groups themselves without asking anyone, even though we had all paid the same. When we complained, the guide's answer was that it was the cheapest tour and "well, now you know". The vast majority of companies in Moorea work with a maximum of 6 swimmers, and for good reason. We saw it for ourselves with two other companies, and the experience was completely different: calm, no turns and truly enjoyable. Only book tours with a maximum of 6 swimmers and no turns.
IF YOUR DREAM IS TO SWIM WITH WHALES, DO NOT BOOK A TOUR WITH MORE THAN 6 SWIMMERS OR ONE THAT SPLITS PEOPLE INTO TURNS.
I'm sharing our experience with Tama Tours so this doesn't happen to anyone else. It was one of the worst experiences of our lives.
In Moorea, a whale tour means searching for the whales, watching their behavior and, if it's safe, swimming towards them. This isn't a zoo: they're wild animals and every day is different. Sometimes you see them on the first try, sometimes you swim and have to go back to the boat. It all takes time and patience.
Regulations allow only 6 swimmers per guide and boat. With 6, everyone gets to live the experience. Tama Tours takes 12 people and splits them into two groups of 6 who swim in turns. On a 4-hour tour, one group will almost certainly miss out.
After almost 3 hours of searching, we found a mother and her calf resting at the surface. The first group had the experience of a lifetime, and we were really happy for them. We waited on the boat for about 50 minutes while the captain kept saying "5 more minutes and we switch", but those 5 minutes never came.
When it was finally our turn, there was hardly any time left and the whales had started moving. We jumped in 3 times, swimming fast and desperately, all rushing and stress. At one point I slipped and fell in too early. They gave me a dirty look and nobody helped me back on board; I had to climb up however I could with my fins on. We never saw them, they were too far away.
Rushing doesn't work with whales: you need calm and the right moment, the exact opposite of what we got. The way this tour is organized, it's a lottery depending on your group.
They chose the groups themselves. Nobody asked who wanted to go first, even though we had all paid the same, and nobody offered the second group a lower price. When I told the guide it wasn't fair, he said it was the cheapest tour and that's how it works. I said I'd rather pay more for a better experience, and he answered: "Well, now you know." He also told us we hadn't seen whales because of our "bad vibes". You can't say that to someone who has travelled halfway around the world to fulfil their dream of swimming with whales. That night I was in tears.
To be fair, we don't question the professionalism of the guide or the captain, and we know this is nature: sometimes you see them and sometimes you don't. The problem is the organization. Putting 12 people on a whale tour doesn't work.
We know this because afterwards we did two tours with two other companies, both wonderful and with a maximum of 6 swimmers. On the first one we saw whales twice, and it was an incredible experience. We're so happy we got to live it: we finally felt what we had come all this way for. On the second one we didn't see them because they kept moving, but we still came back happy. We tried calmly, swam looking for them, heard their songs, and it was beautiful. With Tama Tours, the problem wasn't not seeing them: it was the poor organization and the way we were treated.
The vast majority of whale tour companies in Moorea, I'd say 90-95%, only take 6 swimmers. That alone shows this tour doesn't work with more people, and running it with 12 is simply not viable.
My advice: ONLY BOOK TOURS WITH A MAXIMUM OF 6 SWIMMERS AND NO TURNS.

I'm sharing our experience with Tama Tours so this doesn't happen to anyone else. It was one of the worst experiences of our lives. That's why my most important advice comes first: IF YOUR DREAM IS TO SWIM WITH WHALES, DO NOT BOOK A TOUR WITH MORE THAN 6 SWIMMERS OR ONE THAT SPLITS PEOPLE INTO TURNS. How these tours work and why group size matters In Moorea, a whale tour means searching for the whales, watching their behavior and, if it's safe, getting in the water and swimming towards them to see them up close. This isn't a zoo: these are wild animals living freely, and every day is different. Sometimes you see them on the first try. Other times you swim, don't reach them and have to go back to the boat. And some days you see them several times. All of this takes time and patience: you have to find them, observe them and wait for the right moment to get in. The new regulations don't allow more than 6 people in the water per guide and boat. With a group of 6 swimmers, everyone gets to live the experience. Une expérience incroyable avec TAM ! 🐋🌊
Danke an TamaTours!
We booked a private whale tour for 4 people and had the best day! Our guide and captain were so well informed and helped us have the most incredible encounter with two humpback whales. We would go back to Mo’orea just to do this tour again!
10/10 experience!!

Maururu
Amazing experience! Team were professional, friendly and funny. Highly recommend this tour 🙏
