Starting from the beginning: the representative who helped me book my service was amazing. Mary answered all my questions with confidence and genuine warmth. She was incredibly personable. Her customer service was truly 10/10.
Day of the move:
For context, I was moving out of state from Houston, relocating items from my one-bedroom apartment and office into a PODS container parked in my complex’s lot. I had booked a two-person crew for two hours (based on past experience where that setup was sufficient).
Unfortunately, the morning of my move, the elevator in my building broke. I immediately contacted the operations manager at Square Cow Moovers (SCM) to ask if an additional mover could be added to help with the stairs. Although they couldn’t send another mover, James (the operations manager) was extremely communicative, professional, and kind throughout. Again, 10/10 for customer service.
Around 12:04 p.m., I received a call letting me know the movers were 20 minutes away. They arrived closer to 12:40. Normally, I wouldn’t have minded, Houston traffic is no joke, but I later learned that billing starts when the crew leaves their post, NOT when they actually arrive or begin moving furniture.
Once the movers arrived, they came upstairs to assess what big items needed to be moved: my king-size bed, L-shaped couch, and vanity desk. After signing the documents on an iPad, they got started right away. Inside, they worked efficiently, wrapping the couch and bed quickly and handling everything with care. Because the elevator was out, they had to carry everything down THREE flights of stairs, which I recognize made the job much harder.
After about two hours, they had ONLY finished the larger pieces, and I still had a significant amount left in the apartment. I asked for an estimate on how much longer it would take, and one mover said, “It shouldn’t take that long, maybe another hour.” I agreed to continue and pay the extra cost.
Unfortunately, after that additional hour, there was still a lot left — two TVs (which they appeared to forget, as I later found them placed in the bathroom), a bike, and many moving bags. While one mover seemed to be working steadily, the other was much slower, which was frustrating given the added time and cost. I eventually stopped the job once the total cost exceeded my original estimate by more than $230!
After they left, I went down to inspect the PODS container and immediately realized how poorly it had been packed. In my pre-move instructions, I was told to leave out comforters to wrap fragile items like TVs, but the movers didn’t use them. One of my TVs was standing upright on the floor of the container, completely unsecured, almost guaranteed to break during transport, while another was prompted on the side of the container. On top of that, the POD was packed so inefficiently that there was no room left for my remaining items. I ended up spending HOURSSS unpacking and repacking everything myself just to make space, and in the process discovered a huge amount of wasted room toward the back of the container, clear evidence of careless loading!
I immediately called James, who only refunded the cost of the extra hour, which I appreciated. However, that didn’t make up for the stress and lost time. Because I was moving out of state and had planned to drive overnight, this delay and extra PERSONAL LABOR pushed my departure back until 1 a.m., forcing me to spend additional money on hotels during the drive.
Overall, this experience was extremely disappointing. While the customer service from Mary and James was exceptional, the actual moving service fell far short, from the poor time management to the careless loading and packing. I had really high hopes for Square Cow Moovers based on their customer service prior to the movers, but unfortunately, I wouldn’t hire them again or recommend them to family or friends.
