Beware of this place. Check online before going: “Patients of Philadelphia dentist urged to test for HIV and hepatitis, Smiles at Rittenhouse Square closed”. My husband used to see the former owner of the practice and kept seeing Dr Chopra. Last time he went there was on March 2026 and then on May we saw on Instagram the news coming out about this issue. Nobody contacted us, we just saw it on the news by chance, and we were extremely scared. The dentist was cutting corners by reusing materials that should have been discarded after a single use, just to name an example of what she was doing. She was charging a good amount of money for the procedures and even then she was trying to get more money by deceiving the patients and their trust. We even had to pay to our insurance for the HIV and hep B tests. We feel there is no protection for the patient and no punishment for the dentist. God forbid we don’t pay for a procedure, and everything that happens afterwards. But when this woman disregarded her patient’s trust for her own advantage, we had to pay for our own medical expenses and we had to live those days waiting for the results.
I went here last year because the reviews online were so good. They must be fake. After getting the NOTICE FROM THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT ABOUT MY POTENTIAL EXPOSURE TO HIV AND HEP B AND HEP C, I am DEEPLY disturbed by this dentist. I already had a very bad experience at this office. Dr. Chopra insisted I get a crown and that it was URGENT. She was extremely rude, rushing through the visit, acted annoyed when i asked questions. Told me I needed to have an UNNECESSARY procedure done. I did not trust her opinion and went to another dentist who confirmed it was not necessary. Deeply disturbed by the letter I received from the Philadelphia Public Health department stating Dr. Chopra had severe sanitation violation and now need to be tested for the risk of HIV, HEP C, HEP B she put me at risk for.
I wasn’t going to leave a review but after getting the email attached below I am. I went to SOTS twice- first for an intake and then for a cavity fill and deep clean. The overall energy from the dental assistants was lackluster. They didn’t communicate clearly and were very cold/awkward. The dentist herself communicated with the assistants poorly; I sat in one of the rooms (separate from the main area where she was working on filling cavities etc.) and could hear the dentist shouting for one of the assistants. I then learned when getting my cavity filled that this was a common occurrence. She filled my cavity while calling out to the assistant’s instructions for me and other patients. I was really disappointed when during my cavity she asked an assistant for something and they did not know where it was located. Also, the rooms we were in were disorganized, with materials in areas I felt they shouldn’t be. I do not plan on returning, especially after the DOH email.
Go there at your on Peril. This place should be shut down and everyone involved should be held accountable!
“ Dear Recipient,
The Philadelphia Department of Public Health (PDPH) is sending this notification because you or a minor you care for received dental care at the Smiles at the Square/Smiles at Rittenhouse Square dental clinic, located at 255 S. 17th St., St#2507, Philadelphia, PA, between April 2025 and May 2026.
We recently learned that instruments were inadequately cleaned and sterilized during this time frame, and single-use medications may have been used on multiple patients. Although we are not aware of any transmission of illness due to these lapses, it is possible that this may have exposed you to infections.
As a precaution, we recommend that you be tested for hepatitis C virus (HCV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). See the attached notification letter for more information, testing recommendations, and locations.
Sincerely,
Philadelphia Department of Public Health,
Division of Disease Control”
The staff is very nice and helped fixed my filling a previous dentist messed up. I got an appointment here very quickly when I originally booked. If you are looking for a dentist in Philadelphia, as a person who has seen a lot of dentists due to teeth issues this is one of the best practices I’ve been to and I would definitely recommend.
Friendly people at the front desk but I didn’t trust the dentist. She seemed like she was more interested in trying to sell me a $3,000 sleep apnea device than listening to what I was trying to explain about my sleep apnea & what I wanted to do. Also the questionnaire is insanely long & asks really random questions like “Are you a touchy/sensitive person?” What does that have to do with my teeth?? I genuinely would like to know because I’m so confused what that has to do with my teeth?

Thank you for your feedback. I’m sorry the consultation came across that way, as it was never our intention to make you feel pressured or unheard. Sleep apnea appliances are unfortunately expensive, especially since we do not work directly with medical insurance, which is why we try to be very upfront about treatment costs from the beginning so there are no surprises later.
The initial CBCT scan was taken at no charge to properly evaluate your airway and facial structure so we could provide an accurate diagnosis and discuss appropriate treatment options. We also discussed alternatives, including expansion therapy, even though that is not a treatment we currently provide in our office. Our goal was to educate you on the available options, not to force you into any treatment.
Regarding the questionnaire, I understand that a question like “Are you a touchy/sensitive person?” may sound unusual or unrelated to dentistry. The reason it is included is to help us better understand a patient’s physical sensitivity, comfort level, and possible dental symptoms. It can also be part of screening for issues such as a constricted chewing pattern, clenching, grinding, tooth wear, or sensitivity. These questions help us plan care in a way that keeps the patient as comfortable as possible during treatment.
We respect that every patient has different goals and preferences regarding their care, and the decision is always completely yours. I do appreciate your feedback.

I visited Dr. Chopra for wisdom teeth removal. I was pretty nervous going into it and she did a wonderful job making the experience stress-free. She frequently checked in with me over the following days to make sure everything was all good, which I appreciated.

I don’t typically write reviews, but this practice truly stands out. Overall, a high-quality experience.
Smiles on the Square is well run across the board, with a welcoming front desk and a staff that is consistently professional and kind. I recently moved to Philadelphia and needed dental work, and I’m glad I found them. There is no doubt Dr. Chopra will be my dentist for the foreseeable future. I needed an extraction this year, and Dr. Chopra clearly explained the procedure, recovery, and next steps, including implants, which made the process far less stressful than expected.

I had a great experience with Dr. Chopra and her team. Everyone I interacted with was knowledgable, skilled and kind. I got a deep cleaning, tooth filling and 2 wisdom teeth extractions and it was all completed quickly and painlessly. The office has a great view and a calm and efficient atmosphere.
I’m generally afraid of going to the dentist so I’m particularly grateful for the high quality care and attention I received. I highly recommend this practice!
