My family and I cannot say enough good things about Travel Care Air and Global Jet Care. The professionalism and skill of their staff are unmatched. In winter 2024, my parents were vacationing in Argentina when my father became ill with biliary pancreatitis and was hospitalized in Mendoza, Argentina. I am a critical care nurse in Chattanooga, TN and my sister is a physician in Charleston, SC. I flew to Argentina to help take care of my father while my sister stayed in the US to arrange medical transport home. After calling several air medical companies to no avail, she called Travel Care Air and Ron answered the phone on a Sunday afternoon and efficiently arranged the transport via Global Jet Care. This was the quickest available medical flight home. On Monday morning, the financial portion was completed. Tuesday morning, the staff flew to Mendoza and after an overnight rest period, they flew my dad home beginning Wednesday morning.
My dad was initially stable for the first few days in Argentina. The hospital there cared for him to the best of their ability, but their capabilities did not equal an academic center in the US. Having seen several pancreatitis patients who were extremely ill during our time in healthcare, my sister and I were concerned that he would decompensate and exceed the capability of the hospital in Argentina. This occurred early Wednesday morning, just a few hours before the flight team was due to arrive. He quickly became febrile, tachycardic, and hypoxic and his central line was infected. His kidneys were also injured from poor fluid resuscitation. The flight team arrived and were concerned that his oxygen requirements were too high to transport him back to the US without intubation. I told them, "You have to get him out of here." I prayed on the floor of that Argentinian hospital for God to save my dad and to get him home, and that's what happened.
The flight team quickly stepped into action. Flight RN Lindsay assessed my dad, placed new IV access, administered tylenol, and convinced the doctor in Argentina to give him a dose of antibiotics as well as an extra dose for her to administer later in the flight. Paramedic Kyle also assisted with my dad's care, but initially he helped calm me down when I was worried that the crew wouldn't be able to take my dad home since he had deteriorated overnight. He told me that their medical director was excellent and that if there was a way to get my dad home, they would find it. In talking with Kyle, I learned that he had previously worked with a flight paramedic friend of mine whose skill I respect, so that also put me at ease. Lindsay had ER and helicopter ambulance experience at a well-respected air medical service in Tennessee so I was confident in her abilities and knowledge. I met their pilots (Josh and another whose name escapes me) and they explained how they would swap pilot/copilot roles throughout the trip. I was confident we were in good hands.
Lindsay and Kyle stabilized my dad such that he was able to be transported from the hospital to the plane via ambulance, then onto the plane and home to the US. They started much-needed fluids en route, gave tylenol when needed, monitored vital signs, gave more antibiotics when due, and were able to wean his oxygen requirements. After arriving at the hospital in Chattanooga, what followed was a 4-month hospitalization and rehab stay and a long recovery. My dad has spoken often about the many "God Moments" that saved him during his illness. A pivotal "God Moment" was the trip back to the US. The whole company, whether a pilot, paramedic, CEO, medical director, or nurse made the transport process happen perfectly. I am convinced that my dad is alive and well because this team transported him home at a critical moment; without them, he would not be here today. Thank you to Lindsay, Kyle, Josh, Ron, and all of Global Jet Care and Travel Care Air for your part in my dad's journey to healing.
