We had an amazing experience learning how to surf with DJ! He was very thorough and knowledgeable and we definitely felt safe heading out in the ocean. We had no anticipation of being able to catch a wave, our goal was to just stand up, but both my husband and I were able to surf a few waves. Highly recommend DJ!!

He was patient, clear with his instructions, and really took the time to make sure I understood the fundamentals. DJ’s positive energy kept me motivated, even when I wiped out. We had an exceptional surf lesson with DJ for our three kids (13, 12, and 10). While our kids are comfortable in the water, they didn’t know how to surf, and DJ had them up and surfing literally on their first attempt. He was a great instructor and the kids loved the experience. Highly recommend!!

He tailored the lesson perfectly to our skill levels, providing personalized tips and feedback that helped us all catch some waves (even me!). Surfing is my favorite activity to do while visiting Maui! During our last trip, we took two surf lessons with Dj. Both times were fantastic. Everyone in our group caught multiple waves and did great with Dj's guidance. Dj is an incredibly encouraging and patient teacher and is a JOY to be around (haha, get it?). Super professional, great communicator, and all around wonderful human. We felt safe, had a fun time, and will be booking more lessons with Dj next time we visit. Book a lesson, you won't regret it.
I highly recommend Joy Ride Maui as a “Must Do” for your Hawaiian vacation. DJ helped make our trip to Maui all the more special. Our teenage boys were naturals but their parents “not so much.” He was kind, patient, and ridiculously knowledgeable as to when we should start to paddle and how to stand up. I don’t hesitate one bit to recommend DJ and Joy Ride Maui to our neighbors and friends as soon as I hear they’re headed to Maui. We’ll definitely be back!!
DJ is absolutely fantastic. I’ve surfed a little previously but he was quick to spot how to improve my paddling and wave reading and was incredibly patient and encouraging. He’s such a welcoming guy and is not just a great surf instructor but also very knowledgeable about other things to do on the island. Highly highly recommended!
