Over the past months, my son has been supported by Karl, who has become an essential part of our village.
My son first reached out to him in July 2025, during a period filled with family transitions and the pressure of national exams, PSLE. What followed has been a steady and visible change for us both. I’ve watched a child who once carried self esteem, anxiety and more, begin to regain his calmness, confidence and emotional balance.
Their biweekly sessions have given my youngest a safe and consistent space to express himself. Each meeting seems to ground him a little more. My son is learning how to navigate stress, understand his emotions and trust his own ability to cope. The shift has been gentle but is unmistakable. My son is calmer, more assured and more able to handle the demands of this season in his life.
Karl has also guided me as a parent. His insights help me understand what my child is experiencing, and he gives me practical ways to better support my son at home. Karl’s guidance has strengthened the connection between my son and me. I feel better equipped to support my son through this challenging period.
Karl brings warmth, clarity and genuine care to every interaction. His work has made a meaningful difference to my son and to our family. I’m deeply grateful for his presence, his consistency and the positive impact he has had on my child’s well-being.

Thank you so much for this incredibly heartfelt review. I am genuinely moved and profoundly grateful. I want to begin by saying what I have felt from the very first session: your son is blessed beyond words to have you as his mother.
You have stood steady through family transitions, PSLE pressures, and the emotional storms that come with growing up. You have held space for your child with a strength that is both gentle and fierce. There may be no awards, no public applause, and no national headlines for mothers like you, but there should be. You are the quiet heroines who carry the weight of an entire world on your shoulders while still finding the grace to show up, stay kind, and keep going.
Working in teen and adolescent counselling often means stepping into some of the most tender and uncertain phases of a young person’s life. It can be challenging because emotions move fast, reassurance needs to be constant, and trust must be earned slowly. But it is also deeply rewarding to witness a young person find their footing, reconnect with their confidence, and begin to believe in themselves again. Your son’s journey reflects exactly that kind of quiet, powerful turning.
Even in a demanding week, you found time to write this. That alone speaks volumes about your heart. And what your review doesn’t say, but what I see clearly, is that your son’s progress is inseparable from your own unwavering love and presence. You have been his anchor, his safe harbour, and his constant. I simply joined the village that you have been building all along.
Your son’s growth has been a privilege to witness. The gentleness in how he is learning to cope, to breathe, to trust himself again is remarkable. But so is your willingness to learn, to reflect, and to support him in new ways. That is parenting at its most courageous.
Thank you for trusting me with your son, and for trusting me with your own questions, fears, and hopes. It is mothers like you, unseen but utterly essential, who form the true backbone of our country. I am honoured to stand with you in this season and beyond.
With deep respect, gratitude, and admiration,

Thank you so much for your heartfelt words. I am deeply moved and truly humbled. It has been an honour to journey with you, and I want to take a moment to acknowledge the depth of courage it takes to do the work you are doing.
Showing up for yourself in the midst of heartbreak, trauma, and a demanding life is no small thing. The first cut is often the deepest, and facing that pain rather than pushing it away is an act of profound strength. You have done that without denying your reality, and without slipping into a victim story, and that speaks volumes about who you are.
Week after week, even with everything on your plate, you have chosen to show up. You have given yourself permission to slow down, to feel, to question, to grieve, and to reclaim pieces of yourself in the process. That is not just healing, it is transformation, and I feel privileged to witness it.
Thank you for trusting me with your story, your vulnerability, and your hopes. The safe space we create is built on your bravery as much as my presence, and I am grateful to be part of your journey towards wholeness and peace.

Working with Karl has been an incredibly positive and transformative experience. From our very first session, it was clear how deeply he listens, communicates, and genuinely cares about his clients. He creates such a warm, safe, and judgment-free space where I feel completely comfortable sharing my thoughts and emotions. Even though our sessions are virtual, he seamlessly bridges the distance — it truly feels as though we’re in the same room.
What stands out most is his attentiveness and the thoughtful way he interacts and provides feedback. He doesn’t just listen — he hears me. Every session leaves me feeling understood, validated, and hopeful. I always walk away with greater clarity and a renewed sense of purpose as we continue our work together toward a better, more balanced version of myself.
I also deeply appreciate his dedication to his field. It is evident that he stays current with the latest therapeutic techniques and thoughtfully integrates them into our sessions, which makes the experience feel both grounded and progressive.
I wholeheartedly recommend Karl to anyone seeking a compassionate, skilled therapist who provides a truly safe space to explore emotions, uncover core drives, and grow toward healing and self-understanding. His professionalism and genuine care set him apart — and I’m deeply grateful to have him as a guide on this journey.

Thank you so much, Dr Arun, for your incredibly generous words. I am genuinely humbled. It is an honour to walk with you on this journey, even though you are in the USA, and we are twelve hours apart and separated by an ocean. Your commitment to the process, despite the time difference and your demanding schedule, speaks volumes.
I have to say, your surgeon’s precision shows up even in your feedback. Every line feels like it has been thoughtfully sutured together with care and intention. I will do my best to keep up with that standard, thankfully without the need for any scalpels.
What I especially appreciate is how your review reflects something important that many people overlook. Not everyone seeks therapy because something is “wrong”. Sometimes people, like yourself, are functioning well but choose to invest in their growth, insight, and emotional clarity. Your example beautifully shows just how beneficial therapy can be even when there is no obvious crisis. It takes wisdom and courage to make space for inner work before pain forces it.
Thank you again for your heartfelt recommendation. I am honoured to be part of your journey towards clarity, healing, and balance. And here is to continuing our work together. One time zone, one insight, and one carefully stitched metaphor at a time.

Karl, first and foremost, is a sincere, caring and compassionate individual - qualities I believe are fundamental for this type of work. Beyond that, he is a highly qualified therapist with ample experience. This combination creates a supportive space; an opportunity for healing.

Thank you, K for taking the time, and more so, for finding the strength to put words together in the middle of what you’ve been carrying. That in itself is no small thing.
When we’re in the fog of anxiety or depression, even a single sentence can feel like climbing a mountain, so I read each word of yours as an act of quiet courage. Writing something heartfelt in that space is not about reviewing a therapist; it’s about reclaiming voice, hope, and meaning, one word at a time.
Your reflection reminded me why I see therapy through a salutogenic lens, not about what’s wrong, but about what allows life and health to keep moving towards wholeness. Sometimes that movement is barely visible, yet it’s profoundly alive.
I’m deeply humbled by your words and even more by the moments we could still find space to smile, sometimes even laugh, amidst the gloom. Those moments don’t cancel the pain; they remind us that life, in its quiet wisdom, keeps creating little openings for light to come through.
Thank you for trusting me enough to share that space for bringing your courage, honesty, and even your humour to the room. Healing, I’ve learnt, often begins in those small, imperfect moments of humanity.

As a fellow therapist, I can say that Karl provides a truly safe and non-judgemental space. He fosters a respectful and open environment where feelings and thoughts can be freely explored. What stands out most is the genuine interest he shows in each person’s journey, gently supporting you in developing new and healthier ways of thinking.

Dear David,
Thank you so much for your kind and thoughtful words. They mean a great deal especially coming from a fellow therapist. People often say therapists make the worst clients or patients, but you were definitely the exception!
It was such a joy to work with you, and I felt truly humbled. You are such an accomplished therapist yourself, yet you trusted the process, which made things so smooth that I could almost afford to be the lazy therapist. As I always say I do absolutely nothing (my back is bad and I’m the dumbest person alive!), my clients do all the work.
But as you know, I do care deeply and genuinely and I simply remain present and curious. And I am definitely ready to walk the last mile with you. Grateful for the trust and the journey we shared.
Warmly,
Karl

I started counselling with Karl earlier this year, after having worked with several counsellors in Singapore and other parts of the world. What I appreciate most about Karl is the empathy and mirror he brings to our sessions. He does not molly coddle me or trauma bond with me but shows me my truth, in the kindest and most non-judgemental manner. His own life journey as a missionary, law degree and constant investment in his training and education results in him bringing depth to our conversations. We worked together using EMDR therapy which helped me face my childhood obstructions in a beautiful way. He uses personal experiences and reflections to help me understand situations better and unlike most counsellors, does not use his professional boundary to create a wall between us to hide behind but is open and vulnerable even in sharing his own limitations which helps me open up and express myself freely. His humour, kindness and straightforward attitude helps me learn about myself with acceptance and kindness. He has helped me understand myself better, become a better partner but most importantly learn to express myself without any underlying guilt. My partner and I also had our first session together and the way in which Karl helped us understand each other and communicate left us both feeling much closer and stronger after the session. I look forward to meeting him every week and feel growth in every interaction.

Dear Sarah,
Thank you for your heartfelt review. I am humbled by your courage and openness in this journey. For me, therapy is not about rescuing but about standing with someone as they discover their own strength, their hidden resources, and those sparkling moments that deserve to be celebrated.
Professionalism in counselling is never about building a wall to hide behind. Boundaries are there for safety and clarity of roles, because our ethics stress above all the importance of trust, non-harm, and genuine benefit for the client. My task is not to make anyone feel small, but to offer a safe space where growth can happen.
I was fortunate to learn from teachers who showed me that empathy is not simply being “nice” but being kind, honest, and present without flinching. That is why I continue to train extensively in EMDR, MEMI, IFS, , Brainspotting, SE and in the approaches of people like Gabor Maté, Bessel van der Kolk, Peter Levine, and Stephen Porges. Trauma work has been transformed by their research and wisdom, and it feels only right to keep learning so that those who suffer receive the best we can offer. Everyone deserves that.
Thank you again for allowing me to walk with you in this process. Your openness to face the difficult places and to grow from them is deeply inspiring, and I hope your words encourage others to find their own path of healing.
With respect,
Karl deSouza

Dear Edwin,
They say some are men of few words yet a few words, when genuine, can speak volumes. Your review, though brief, carries encouragement and hope for many.
In much of Asia, shame can feel like a shadow that follows us closely. It thrives in silence, secrecy, and the fear of being judged. Yet shame cannot survive in the light of openness, honesty, and compassion. Therapy creates that distance a space where shame loses its grip because it is met not with judgement but with understanding.
It is not common for Asian men to come forward for therapy, and even fewer share their journey openly. That is why your words mean so much. They will give light and courage to others who may be unsure whether to seek support to remind them that therapy is not only for when something is “wrong,” but also for becoming a fuller version of themselves.
Thank you for entrusting me with that space, and for allowing your few but powerful words to speak hope into the lives of others.
With respect,
Karl deSouza

Karl changed my life! Yes it may sound prosaic or cliched- however therapy by the right professional really does help. Went to him because I was crushed by the events of my divorce. Through exploration of common themes of trauma and through EMDR therapy I've emerged stronger than ever before.
Do take note that therapy requires work, sometimes very hard work from both parties. However if you are willing to put in the time and effort, as I did, you will find no better person than Karl to help you through your tough times.
Till then friend, I bid you adios!

Dear Dr Brendan,
Thank you for your generous words and for taking the time to share your experience. I’m truly heartened that the work felt meaningful and that you’re feeling stronger. You’re absolutely right, therapy is collaborative and can be hard graft at times, and your commitment made all the difference.
While I can’t discuss any specifics, I want to affirm the courage it takes to face painful chapters and to keep showing up for yourself. Confidentiality and privacy are at the heart of this work, yet I’m grateful for your willingness to share so openly and generously.
I’ll also admit I’m relieved this is written rather than spoken in person otherwise I’d be left blushing and not quite knowing where to hide with such kind words!
Wishing you continued steadiness and growth as you move forward.
Warm regards,
Karl DeSouza

Karl is kind, humorous, and deeply empathetic. His non-judgmental approach in therapy has helped me greatly in my healing journey. He holds space for me during my most vulnerable, raw, and difficult moments. I would have not gotten through the first few weeks of my trauma without his unwavering support. He gently guide you to uncover your fundamental beliefs system, and provides you with different perspectives to ponder. He has taught me to heal, to advocate for my own needs, and most importantly, to see hope, peace, and joy when I could not see it.

My husband and I have been with Karl for many years now. He has helped not just us, but all our relationships with family and friends.
Karl brings in a pure curiosity about you that really helps you open up. I have been to a couple of other therapists before him and usually some personal bias seeped in which made me uncomfortable. Karl’s genuine non-judgemental outlook helped me talk about anything under the sun. Especially the things I was ashamed of. He is so very gentle in his understanding, and is ALWAYS kind to you even when you are not being kind to yourself. When I first met him, therapy for me was mainly problem solving but its has transcended now into a tool for wholistic living. It has become a way of understanding myself in connection to almost everything.
In his sessions I have always found my needles of pain in the haystack of life. No matter how old or forgotten they are found and worked on wonderfully. He has given and continues to give me tools to understand and handle situations and hold my emotions without any shame at every stage.
The bond between me and my husband has become so much stronger with these practices. Where earlier there was helplessness and issues, there are now possibilities and deep conversations with so much understanding of the other.
What earlier felt like surviving, now feels like living and enjoying my life.

Dear TJ
Your words truly moved me—thank you for your generosity and trust in sharing them. Coming from someone as insightful and intelligent as yourself, your reflections carry a deep and quiet strength.
What you’ve expressed so beautifully is that marriage counselling isn’t only for couples in crisis—it can also be a path for those who wish to grow, connect more deeply, and build a life that feels lived rather than endured. Not everyone may need therapy, but everyone can gain from it. That, to me, is a powerful truth.
Your willingness to engage in the process—not just for resolution, but for transformation—is something I deeply admire. It’s been a privilege to support you and your husband as your marriage counsellor, and to witness how the space we’ve created together has opened up more understanding, compassion, and possibility between you both.
Thank you again for walking this path with such openness. Wishing you continued depth, tenderness, and joy in all your relationships—especially the one with yourself.

Dear Lysander,
Your words are like a warm cup of tea on a rainy day—comforting, honest, and just the right temperature. I’m deeply grateful for your kind reflections.
At Listening Ear, it’s never about quick fixes or perfect answers (I’m afraid I left my crystal ball in the wash), but about walking alongside you as you uncover your own clarity. It has been heartening to witness not just your courage, but also your sharp wit and your remarkable ability to find moments of laughter even in the midst of pain—both are quiet strengths in their own right.
Thank you for letting me be part of your journey. It’s a quiet honour I don’t take lightly.

I have been seeing Karl for many years. Even though our sessions are conducted online, remarkably, they have never felt distant or less effective. Karl’s attentive nature and ability to create a relaxed atmosphere allow us to explore our thoughts more deeply while guiding our conversations in a meaningful and productive direction.
As a physician, I greatly appreciate Karl’s dedication to staying up-to-date with the latest therapeutic techniques. His expertise includes EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing), Somatic Experiencing (SE), Dynamic Attachment Repatterning Experience (DARe), Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT), and the Gottman Method for Couples Therapy.
Karl’s understanding of trauma, particularly how childhood attachment wounds impact the nervous system, is exceptional. His approach is forward-focused and resolution-oriented, consistently rooted in salutogenic and strength-based principles. Rather than giving advice, he empowers me to tap into my own resources and strengths to find clarity and healing.
Each session with Karl leaves me feeling heard, understood, and relieved, as we continue making tangible progress. He fosters a safe, judgement-free space where any topic is welcomed with openness and compassion. Having experienced his skill and dedication first-hand, I have no hesitation in recommending him to anyone seeking genuine healing and growth.

Dear Dr Ragini,
Thank you so much for your generous and thoughtful words. I’m genuinely touched by your reflections and honoured by the trust you’ve placed in me over the years.
Coming from someone as highly trained and experienced as yourself, your feedback carries special significance. As a physician, your insight into both the science and humanity of healing adds depth to every conversation we’ve shared. What I find especially admirable is your openness to growth—even in spaces outside your own field of expertise—and your willingness to learn from someone like me, a layperson in comparison to your clinical training. That humility, coupled with your enthusiasm for deeper understanding, speaks volumes about the kind of healer you are.
It’s been a privilege to accompany you on this journey. Your courage, insight, and capacity to engage with the work so fully are what make our sessions meaningful. Thank you again for your kind recommendation and for the trust you’ve extended.
Wishing you continued clarity, strength, and a sense of quiet restoration as you move forward.
Warmest regards,

I’ve had the privilege of working with Karl as my for the past eight months, and his guidance has made a profound positive impact on my life and relationship with my husband. What distinguishes Karl is not only his professional expertise but the genuine compassion and unique perspective he brings to his practice, informed in part by his background as a missionary. This experience enriches his client-centered approach, fostering a connection that feels deeply human and empathetic.
Karl has a remarkable talent for clarifying complex emotional challenges, bringing them into focus with insight and practicality. His innovative way of thinking helps clients navigate difficulties with renewed clarity and purpose. Whether in individual sessions or couples counseling (both of which I’ve found transformative), he cultivates a safe, nonjudgmental space where growth becomes tangible.
Sessions with Karl never feel transactional; instead, it’s clear he genuinely cares and invests wholeheartedly in helping people thrive. He consistently goes above and beyond to tailor his strategies, ensuring they align with your unique needs and goals.
For anyone seeking a counselor who blends wisdom, warmth, and an authentic commitment to your growth, I cannot recommend Karl highly enough. His ability to merge professional skill with heartfelt advocacy for clients is rare, and I’m deeply grateful for the positive changes he’s helped foster in my life.

Dear Bharati,
Your words mean more to me than I can express, and I am truly humbled by your kind and generous reflection on our work together. It has been a privilege to witness your growth over these past eight months—your dedication, courage, and openness have been nothing short of inspiring.
You are an incredibly intelligent, strong, and self-made individual, and the effort you have put into this journey is truly commendable. What stands out even more is your humility and willingness to embrace self-reflection and growth, which can be especially difficult for someone in a high position. It takes immense strength to remain open to learning and evolving, and the way you have engaged in this process with sincerity and grace is deeply admirable.
Healing and transformation require not just guidance but also the willingness to engage fully in the process, and you have done so with such confidence and commitment. The way you have approached both individual and couples counselling reflects your deep strength and determination to foster meaningful change.
As a marriage counsellor, creating a safe, nonjudgmental space where both individuals and couples can find clarity and healing is at the heart of what I do. Knowing that marriage counselling has been valuable for you and your relationship reaffirms the deeper purpose behind this work.
Thank you for your trust, for allowing me to walk alongside you, and for your kind words that remind me why I do what I do. I have no doubt that the resilience, wisdom, and clarity you have cultivated will continue to guide you forward in life and in love. It has truly been my honour to be part of your journey.

Trauma! A word I deeply misunderstood.
I always assumed trauma was for war veterans and victims of abuse. I didn't realise that I experienced trauma every time my mother wasn't available to me in infancy or when my dad was away at work during childhood. They were both great parents and I was brought up in a house of abundance. Even in a situation like this I never imagined there would be so much trauma hidden.
It surfaced in the form of food addictions etc, which are commonly accepted by society as "over eating". Doesn't sound very scary until your doctor wants to shove tubes into you to check if everything is ok and even in a situation like this you can't stop having that second dinner at midnight which is deep fried and full of sugar.
Karl has helped me identify and equipped me with tools which has given me the confidence to cope with this. It wasn't as boring as I make it sound. His approach was friendly, in fact the first thing we connected on was food😅
"Just because it's a serious problem, doesn't mean we have to talk about it with a serious glum face and allow it to define us." That line changed the way I look at myself. He showed me that I could deal with my trauma without having pity for myself.
1st step was hard as a man. I was struggling with maintaining the conventional and in my situation expected image of a man. I had to be emotionally tough and always available to take on responsibility. Going to therapy didn't match this image. I was scraping rock bottom before I had the courage to take up therapy. I hope no one else has to before they do.
Ps: Writing this also reminds me of my appreciation for all that you've done for me and there are so many more like me:)
Thanks Karl! I truly mean it. I am here today and you have a big part in it❤️🙏🏼
🙏🏼

Dear Chiraag,
Wow—your words bring such a huge smile to my face! 😊 It takes incredible strength to reflect so honestly on your journey, and even more to share it so openly. I can’t begin to tell you how much I appreciate your courage, your insights, and, of course, your brilliant sense of humour! 😆
You have always had the wisdom and resilience within you; all I did was help you shine a light on it. The way you’ve embraced self-awareness without self-pity, tackled deep challenges with curiosity, and even redefined what it means to be “strong” as a man—that is real strength. 💪🏽 And let’s be honest, finding humour in the process? That’s a rare gift! You didn’t just “do the work,” you did it in a way that makes you an inspiration to so many others who might still be hesitant to take that first step.
As a trauma therapist, I love the fact that you have chosen not to let trauma define you. Instead, you’ve stepped into a place of growth, empowerment, and authenticity. You are dancing your own dance, to your own rhythm, and that is something truly powerful. “You are not the darkness you endured. You are the light that refused to surrender.” ✨
And yes, I absolutely agree—just because something is serious does not mean we can’t regulate and smile through it. Healing isn’t about staying stuck in the story; it’s about reclaiming your own narrative with courage and joy. Keep walking your path with the same kindness, strength, and wit that make you uniquely you.

Karl is an exceptional counsellor with the ability to understand and breakdown situations. He knows where to pause clients and brings awareness to the situation. He draws from great examples and experiences making it easier to understand the situation. He has a high level of empathy but is also realistic in his assessment even if it may be tough to hear - he is patient while delivering this insights. Lastly and most importantly I feel very safe and secure while speaking to Karl allowing vulnerability and as a result more receptive to feedback. Amazing experience and highly recommended.

Dear Rishi,
Your words truly mean so much to me, and I deeply appreciate the trust you have placed in me. But more than anything, I want to honour you—your depth of thought, your sensitivity, and your incredible ability to engage with life’s complexities with both intelligence and heart.
What stands out about you is how effortlessly you carry your depth—you have profound insight and emotional awareness, yet you make it look so easy. There are no airs, no pretence—just a genuine openness and humility that make working with you such a privilege. It is no small thing to allow yourself to be vulnerable, especially in therapy, where facing difficult truths requires immense courage. The way you step into self-reflection with sincerity, curiosity, and quiet strength is truly rare.
As a counsellor working in marriage counselling and couples counselling, creating a space where clients feel safe and supported is something I deeply value. Knowing that you have felt secure enough to be vulnerable and receptive to feedback means everything to me. Vulnerability is not just an act of trust—it is a testament to your resilience and willingness to grow. As Carl Rogers said, “The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change.” And Rishi, your ability to step into that space of self-acceptance and growth is truly inspiring.
I have no doubt that the path ahead for you is one of clarity, strength, and deep fulfilment, and I feel privileged to have been a small part of your journey. Thank you for your kindness, your trust, and for being exactly who you are—you are a gift to this world.
