This was an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime experience and one of the highlights of our trip to Iceland.
What made it so special was that we were the only group on the lagoon. Paddling quietly among the icebergs with the mountains and glacier surrounding us was an unforgettable experience. It felt remote, peaceful and unlike anywhere else we’ve ever been.
We were fortunate with the weather, but the whole operation was exceptionally well organised. All the equipment was clean, good quality and easy to use, and the dry suits kept us comfortable. Our guide, Thomas, gave a thorough safety briefing and clear instructions, which made us feel completely confident on the water.
From arrival to departure, everything ran seamlessly. The scenery was breathtaking, the organisation was first class and the experience itself was simply phenomenal.
We would highly recommend this adventure to anyone visiting Iceland.
UNBELIEVABLE. A once in a lifetime experience. An earthquake in southern Iceland last night must have triggered activity up here on the east coast and flipped, cracked and disrupted a ton of icebergs. Anything blue or (dark blue almost black) you wouldn’t typically see because it is older and deeper. All the white parts are what you usually see on the surface (which might be only 10%of the iceberg). And the blue we saw today will very soon be turned to white as it melts etc.
There was even a waterfall coming off an iceberg (which shouldn’t happen). Presumably when that iceberg flipped, it scooped up a bunch of water that then sat on the new top of the berg, and there was so much volume that it was continuing to spill as a waterfall. It was silty water like the lake, not clear like from freshly melting ice.
One of the later pics shows an iceberg that flipped 90° and you see the white on the left (that used to be the top) and blue towards the middle, progressing to a deep blue/black where the ice is hundreds of years old at least and previously under intense pressure. That slowly extrudes air from the ice, this less white color).
Our guide (Thomas - who was awesome) was in a constant state of amazement as he had never seen anything like all of that before. All of that unique stuff we saw… was not here yesterday. Visibility was very limited, but added to the adventure and the mystique. And we were the only 5 people in the lagoon. Truly an amazing experience.
Thanks to Tamás for all the information about the glaciers and the safety instructions. It was a nice afternoon with almost all the weather-variatuons Iceland can offer 😁 Hint to the management: The Basecamp is not so easy to find. Maybe a flag or a sign at the road crossing and the parking could help 😊
Bisher das Highlight meiner Islandreise. Absolute Empfehlung!
