We designed and built our home in Dunedin in 20011.
Coming from the UK we wanted full central heating with a radiator in every room but were wanting to install an “eco-friendly” system.
We chose an imported European system with solar-heated stored water and a back-up hopper-fed pellet boiler and an “intelligent” controller.
Unfortunately, after five years we looked for an alternative boiler because the pellet boiler was causing us problems:
• wastage of pellets in the burn-down sequence due to the controller constantly calling for heat for a just few minutes and then not, typical of the Dunedin climate, but not cost effective.
• buildup of tar in the burner box and flues due to resin in the pine pellets needing a weekly shut down and cleaning, not fun in the winter months.
We decided we needed an alternative boiler.
On recommendation we called on Neil Riddoch at Highlander Heating.
Neil installed a Grant diesel oil boiler, oil storage tank, and replacement inner flue.
I handled the DCC planning stuff, designed and built an interface between the Grant boiler and the “intelligent” controller, and helped with installing the oil storage tank.
The whole process went smoothly, I enjoyed working with Neil who is a professional, knowledgeable, and experienced heating engineer.
We now have a reliable and trouble-free central heating system supported by an annual inspection and service from Highlander Heating.
