The team at Essex Meadows was absolutely wonderful. Following my 87-year-old mother’s hip fracture, the nursing staff provided excellent pain management and displayed incredible patience. The physical therapy team was top-notch, getting her up and moving confidently within just a few weeks. Additionally, the administrators were amazing, guiding us through the complex transitions of senior care with ease. We couldn't have asked for a better place for her to heal.

When I arrived at Essex Meadows from Manhattan a little over 4 years ago, I wondered how much cultural life I would enjoy here. I’m happy to say it’s been great: lots of theater, musicals, opera, and wonderful museums to visit. And the quality is terrific with many professionals from New York City and Boston. Many trips are planned to these activities, but we also enjoy events here on campus. Never a dull moment! Judy S. - Resident

In this place there is a wide variety of people--from different backgrounds, with a depth of knowledge in their special field. When I start a conversation with someone, I never know where we will end up--usually on a topic that I wouldn't have imagined. They each have different perspectives on what they're doing now and what they have done in the past. It's an education that is limited only by my lack of curiosity.

My mom is in the final week of a seven week stay at The Health Center at Essex Meadows. She was independent prior to her fall and needed total care with two people assisting her upon admission to Essex Meadows. The care she has received there has been phenomenal! Everyone we have encountered is caring, compassionate, and professional. This care started from the first conversation with the admission coordinator prior to her arrival and continued through her stay. The patient coordinator at the front desk always has a bright, welcoming smile! They’ve accommodated every need from her gluten free diet to her physical needs with nursing care, occupational therapy, and physical therapy, to care coordination behind the scenes by their great social worker! They also have an AMAZING recreational therapist who has gone above and beyond ensuring she was engaged with activities she enjoyed. I’ve had several meals there and the food is excellent! There’s a variety of options at every meal and they’ve all been delicious! The dietary staff is also wonderful! As a nurse, I’ve been extremely pleased with the caring environment in The Health Center. The facility is bright, clean, and is decorated for each season! The staff truly treats the residents like family. No one is ever rushed. The staff is also kind to each other! They take time to have a conversation with residents and their families. I’ve often seen them give residents a hug which is so needed when people are alone and separated from their families. Thankfully, she is well enough to return to her home. Many thanks to everyone at the Essex Meadows Health Center! We will miss your smiling faces!

We moved to Essex Meadows when caring for a house and grounds was getting to be too much for us. Now we can sit back and watch all the work being done without lifting a finger. Furthermore, at Essex Meadows, we have found that exercise classes, at multiple ability levels, as well as individual training when desired, are available and very manageable for us. Since the exercise is right here in the building, we actively participate.

I like the comfortable environment and positive nature of people at Essex Meadows. A few of my favorite activities are the winter walks on trails of the property and adjoining preserve; swimming in our indoor salt-water pool; and attending weekly current events discussions led by a director who is well-prepared with challenging questions and up-to-the-minute news topics. As a relatively new resident, I find one of the best ways to get to know people is over a meal. The dinners here are delicious with lots of choices served by a great staff. Sandy M -- Resident

Essex Meadows surpasses all expectations you may have of any aspect of a retirement community. This has been my Mother's happy place for 18 years where I visited regularly, and I think of it more as a luxury cruise ship. The staff (all staff) are courteous, professional and attentive. The property is meticulously maintained and fully featured. Activities of every nature (external and internal) are going on all the time. The food is outstanding, as good as any restaurant I've been to. The residents are happy, active and a joy to engage with. When needed, the health center is, by my estimation, state of the art and expertly run. If there were a sixth star for exceptional, Essex Meadows has earned it and I thank them one and all (on behalf of my Mom) for setting the bar so high.

BEWARE; Our family's experience with Essex Meadows; certain staff had a history of repetitive bad behavior with residents - in order to manipulate emotions and physical well being for staff members advantage. My husband and I love the Essex Meadows location on a 104 acres with walking nature trails and 10 minutes from the marina where we keep our boat. The community also provides us with numerous options on campus such as my water aerobics class, weekly concerts, sing-a-longs in the pub and various game and discussion opportunities. Essex Meadows is home to many artists and art lovers. Being included in this group, I have enjoyed serving as a volunteer member of the Art Gallery Committee by visiting local art exhibitions and associations, and conducting online research to help select artists for changing gallery exhibits. These selections have included water colors, oil paintings, photographs, drawings and much more. Thus, our Art Gallery is yet another creative outreach initiative that connects Essex Meadows with the local community by bringing the community here to us; a really rewarding way to expand our mutual horizons. For its moderate size, the library here at Essex Meadows is amazing, offering readers daily newspapers, magazines, CD’s, puzzles and abundant non-fiction and fiction choices including mysteries, biographies, history, etc. All is managed expertly by our resident librarian Sarah Nisenson assisted by other resident volunteers. I thoroughly enjoy my ongoing volunteer role checking in returned books on the library computer. Diana B. – Resident

I’ve been visiting my mom at Essex Meadows for the past few days, enjoying some of what she loves here… Walking paths with access to extensive Essex Land Trust trail system... A few cherry tomatoes from her community garden bed... Napping with the cat on the screened-in porch… Varied, tasty dinner menu with daily specials and attention to special requests… Lovely, landscaped grounds for a relaxed evening stroll. I have to say I’m jealous of the lifestyle!

As I walked back from the Essex Meadows Preserve, I pondered how fortunate we are to be a 1/4  mile walk from  extensive woods (900 acres!) - where I was treated to one the most abundant and extraordinary Mountain Laurel blossom displays ever - and at the same time - being aware that at just over ½ mile in the opposite direction we have a drug store, liquor store, restaurants, fitness center, fresh fruit and vegetable stand (in season), plant nursery, and meat market! This is all quite remarkable - to say nothing of the camaraderie and entertainment at Essex Meadows itself without having to go anywhere! Nikki L. Resident

I came to Essex Meadows in 2020 from Long Island, my lifetime home. When I lost my sister & many of my friends, I knew EM was THE place to move into. I have met so many nice, fun intelligent new friends here. I have a lovely apartment, yummy food, lots of activities. Where else can you sign up for a dinner cruise on the Connecticut River, being served lobster roll & wine , plus trips to theaters, musical performances, in house bridge, art classes, billiards, plus new croquet & bocci courts. EM is a warm welcoming place with a truly wonderful staff. Nancy T, Resident
