The most unprofessional staff I have ever met!!!
I work in this field of SUD AND MH and I used to take pride in saying so, but this experience was deeply disappointing. From dirty bedrooms with bugs, to being served the same food three days in a row, to not accommodating my religious and medical dietary needs related to my autoimmune disease, the level of care and attention here was unacceptable. On a positive note, there were a handful of compassionate, well-educated clinical team who went above and beyond to fill in the gaps when others could not, whether that meant making a phone call to family or handling a simple request. Again, there were very few who understood the pressure of this field, your community consisted of people who have PTSD,ANXIETY and SUBSTANCE USE DISORDER. I would honestly say 70% of the groups included some type of video or cartoons. How condescending to the adults who took this serious. Probably because all of our lives are worth saving, so to be treated and spoken to like children just infuriated my frustrations. All of us came in there for different reasons, the battles we fight with in ourselves is a difficult battle, a battle where we have surrendered takes strength and resilience. I had a wonderful small group of women, who were to be my support and I’m so grateful for. Some of the men there were kind and respectful and the others I did not feel safe around. Inappropriate behavior was never redirected and staff took no part on educating them about respect for others in the community. Even so, the overall experience was disheartening.
Patients were fighting, trespassers were entering the building, and drugs were being brought in, yet little seemed to be done to address these serious issues. Even routine matters, such as searching belongings or confirming discharge dates, were handled poorly. I had to constantly advocate for myself, which is difficult to do while trying to recover and regain strength. The program also felt highly disorganized and lacked appropriate structure. Several of the clinical leadership decisions seemed shaped by experience working primarily with children, which made the activities feel infantilizing rather than therapeutic. Instead of meaningful outside meetings or structured group sessions, we were often given bubbles, sidewalk chalk, or movies to watch. Recovery should feel supportive and respectful, not like being treated as a child.
My therapist Theo, helped me understand and breakdown my recent “fall from grace” and gave me feedback that I have taken with me, so I can continue this journey of life in the healthiest way possible. I wanted to only mention my therapist because I felt as did so many others. She was the pillar of strength in her role as a therapist and that EMPOWERED US in ways we weren’t quite ready to for ourselves.
