An incredible experience organised by Onesius. We got in contact about a month before the trip, asking for an itinerary. Onesius was very organised and immediately proposed different options. He was also flexible when we had to cut a day off the itinerary due to changes in travel plans. It is comforting to have this level of support when travelling to remote and intimidating Papua.
Once we arrived, we were picked up from the airport and every detail was taken care of. We loved the 3 day trek, where we slept at Klise and Ugem, and saw the local village life in the mountains. We are in good shape and would say the trek was of medium difficulty - keeping in mind the porters were carrying all the water and food. Onesius didn't come on the trek himself but sent a member of his family, Hiron, who was a lovely and enthusiastic guide. The supplied food was varied and tasty, all cooked fresh every day. The hotel in wamena was very nice and comfortable, felt very luxurious after sleeping in the villages. We quickly visited the caves and mummy in the north on the afternoon after the trek, which are interesting but not an essential part of the travel program if short on time.
The highlight by far was the pig festival. An entire village, part of Onesius' family, came to life for the occasion. All dressed in traditional attire, singing and dancing, mock fighting and eventually preparing a pig feast, this was an incredible sight. Absolutely do not miss this in the itinerary, never mind the expense.
The cost of the trip is high but Onesius is generous and distributes the money across his many relatives and contacts in the villages - you feel like you are supporting everybody there.
