I would not use Alpha Floor Sanding again.
The only genuinely positive thing I can say is that Steve’s workmanship was very good, and when the original finish was not what I had clearly asked for, he did eventually rectify it to a standard I was happy with.
Unfortunately, almost everything surrounding the interations and customer service left me deeply disappointed.
From the outset, I was very clear that I wanted our pine floorboards to remain light and natural-looking and specifically wanted to avoid the orange/yellow appearance pine can develop. The initial finish was not what I had asked for. Alpha later acknowledged that samples should have been shown to me before they went ahead, which in my view should have happened as a matter of course given how specific I had been about the finish.
They did rectify the problem, and I was initially told this was being resolved without cost to me. However, I was later charged an additional £250. I queried this because the £250 I had previously been told about related, as I understood it, to applying a stain, which we did not ultimately use. After further correspondence I paid the money simply because I did not want the situation to drag on any longer.
That experience should probably have been enough for me not to use the company again, but I was so pleased with Steve’s actual workmanship that I decided to give them another chance.
I specifically asked to wait until Steve was available to complete further rooms. Dates were discussed in July and 22 August was ultimately confirmed. Based on that confirmed booking, we removed carpets and gripper rods and prepared the rooms for the work. I also sent photographs of the exposed floors in advance so that repairs could be assessed.
Just two days before the job, I was then told to contact Steve myself regarding the repairs and an updated quote. When I spoke to him, I discovered that he could not actually attend on the date that Alpha had confirmed with me.
At that point I cancelled the booking.
After months of dealing with this company, I was left with very little trust in the information I was being given. There were too many instances where what I had understood, what I had been told and what subsequently happened did not seem to match.
I appreciate that schedules can change and that misunderstandings happen, but this felt like far more than an isolated communication issue. Between the problem with the original finish, the subsequent additional charge, the lack of clarity around pricing, the changing arrangements and finally discovering that the person I had specifically waited for was not actually available for the confirmed booking, I completely lost confidence in the company.
What makes it particularly frustrating is that Steve’s actual floor sanding work was excellent. If this review were based purely on his workmanship, it would be very different.
Unfortunately, a good finished floor does not make up for an experience that left me feeling mistrustful, frustrated and unwilling to deal with the company again.
