They were knowledgeable about gluten free here, even though there's no mention of it on the website or menu. They will use plain rice for the rolls and have gluten free soy sauce available, which they bring in a different color container, so you don't mix them up.

Stopped by on a road trip from Ontario Canada to Midwest.
Ordered agedashi tofu, caterpillar roll, dragon roll, rainbow roll, unagi maki. Also a California roll and a chicken donburi. Both of ours came with a miso soup and a salad.
The agedashi tofu skin was sort of gelatinous, even where it wasn't in contact with the sauce (see image). This applied to all tofu pieces. The broth was tasty.
The cucumber in the unagi maki hand roll was limp, the seaweed was damp and hard to chew through, and the unagi was soft, but not in the sort of melt in your mouth way, maybe more related to quality or thawing process. The unagi sauce was tasty, including in the other rolls.
Walked in for my online order, and a doordasher took my order! I was working so the time crunch definitely existed! They got it out for me in 5 minutes and even got me extra soup & salad for the stress. To customer service, to the food it was great! The atmosphere as well was very warm, great welcome in for my first time. Definitely coming back and referring all my guests at the hotel to come

I love Akebono, it's my go-to for ramen and their sushi is usually pretty good. However, I ordered sashimi on Sunday night and got food poisoning from it. The red tuna tasted fine, the white tuna was really good, and the salmon tasted fine but the red snapper tasted off. I was down for the count for a good 36 hours. I hope this is just a one-off, but I'm not sure I'll be coming back for sushi, which is a bummer.

Place is beyond racist towards thee so called blk Americans, the TRUE indigenous beings of these lands. I was waiting almost 30mins straight for an order then I walked up closer to the kitchen area because the service was horrible, then the Japanese man w the bald head usually always by the kitchen, I slightly tapped him on the arm for help and he completely un-acknowledged me like I wasn’t even there all because of my skin tone. This is a restaurant that only really cares about Caucasian service and it needs to be addressed immediately before more individuals like myself, start to! Get it together! Racism is ridiculous and anyone who goes to this restaurant your not better than anyone!
This was my first sushi experience in the Des Moines area years ago, and it has remained a favorite. Food and drinks are wonderful, the atmosphere is laid back yet elegant, and prices are reasonable. While they have many authentic choices, the Iowa Roll is fun if you're looking for something unique!

If I could give this place more stars, I would. Best sushi I've tried since moving to the area. The staff is so personable and attentive - our server also gave phenomenal recommendations and was super accommodating. I seriously can't recommend this place enough. We will be back!
