Poorly Managed and Left to Decay – History Left to Rot
I’m honestly heartbroken to write this review. I’ve stayed at The George Hotel in Piercebridge several times over the years and once rated it five stars. Sadly, it’s now a shell of what it used to be. The hotel feels poorly managed and completely neglected. What was once a proud, historic building full of character and stories has been left to rot. Cracked walls, rotten doors, peeling paint and that unmistakable smell of damp and drains hit you the second you walk in. The once-beautiful island garden now looks like an overgrown jungle, with weeds taking over and no sign of care or pride. Inside, the furniture is worn, the carpets stained, and cleanliness is a serious concern. Food standards have dropped drastically — bland, overpriced, and poorly presented. It’s hard to believe this is the same place that once served hearty, quality meals in such a lovely riverside setting. It’s truly sad to see such a historic landmark — tied to Dick Turpin, the Roman fort, and the famous grandfather clock — left to decay like this. The George Hotel deserves far better stewardship than it currently has. Until management changes and proper investment is made, I couldn’t recommend it to anyone.
Was staying locally for one night and booked into The George for dinner. The staff were under a lot of pressure but we got good service, decent food at a great price, and lots of fuss for our dogs. Despite the problems being experienced we were well looked after and we left full and happy. Thank you to everyone for the welcome, service and food.
Ryan,Norman,Julie and Jenna are the most amazing team who provided, with other staff the very best service any guest could ask for.Whatever we required it was met with such pleasant response and immediate result. Between them they gave us the very best holiday we have ever had and we have travelled world wide.It is the wonderful unique hotel combined with staff who really cared that made the holiday so outstanding.
I would say to guests who are not happy...You only have to ask.
The George is in an awesome setting by the river near a roman settlement and steeped in fascinating history. It is a huge very old building and listed because of its amazing structure. The hotel has been furnished beautifully in keeping with the era it was built. The bedrooms are luxurious and all different with the most amazing curtains and furnishing.
We can truly recommend a visit to anyone who likes something different and absolutely amazing. David d
Nice place…. Unfortunately food let it down
Afternoon tea birthday treat for 4 … looked lovely when it was brought to the table unfortunately underfilled sandwiches, a choice of 2 fillings prawn or chicken, over baked fruit scones, staff not very attentive, asked for a tea refill and 15 mins later had to go ask again, overall experience I wouldn’t do it again, luckily I had a Wowcher experience as the food wasn’t worth £111 never mind the £40 I paid
The pub is very cosy and traditional, which is like, the room is very spacious & cleaned to a good standard for the price point. Staff have been super super helpful for our whole 2 night stay, mitigating any issues we had. Location is very convenient to easily get to Kynren if you have a car or course. Provide a nice full English breakfast in the mornings.
No sleep, needs updating
Stayed here about 20 years ago and feel not much has changed. Check in was easy and friendly staff but the bed not comfortable and small for a double. I know comfort of bed is subjective but they are old mattresses. Biggest issue was you could hear everything between the rooms. Conversations, movement, snoring the lot! I had enough by 6am and left. Needs a overhaul and soundproofing, not the best
Wedding meal and over night stay.
I just wanted to say how amazing Nathan and Ryan were on mine and my new husband’s special day. We got married in Darlington and wanted a lovely meal with the small group of people and these two gentleman couldn’t do anything more than help and make everything perfect. Thank you so much to you both and to all staff!!! We booked the cottage after and it was perfect vey big and comfortable. Both the meal for the wedding party and breakfast for us in the morning was amazing. Your venue and views were everything we wanted and more. Thank you very much.
No room at the inn,
Been to this quaint hotel in 2023 as a stop over while travelling to Scotland, beautiful room friendly staff and a very good cooked breakfast in the morning. We decided to use it again, but this time we booked the cottage that is available at the George because we took our 2 granddaughters along with us and wanted to be under the same roof and bonus hot tube. Booked a night for the upward journey and a night for the return journey (halfway). The upward journey, arrived late afternoon, the cottage and staff were great asked for and booked meal for 5pm, food arrived and wow what a difference from our last trip, roast dinner was awful roast potatoes rubbery, veg cold and the colour of it was so uninviting. Breakfast, Monday morning, 7:30- 10:00. We turn up at 8:30, place was locked and nobody home. After 15 mins off waiting outside, a rushed and very, just got out of bed looking man let us in, we ordered breakfast and once again it was disappointing, over cooked and not very appealing. Return journey, rolled up about 7:30pm, went to check in as we had already had a busy and long trip down, firstly the gentleman from the week before recognised us and went to look for our booking, a minute or 2 and a flustering guy promptly said that there was a problem and the cottage had been given away and was already occupied by a honeymooning couple, thus no room available, we were offered a room for us to share but you can imagine 2 teenage girls sharing with there grand parents was not an ideal scenario, we felt we had no choice but to leave and carrying on our journey back to Kent another 5 hour trip. No apology So different to our last visit, Different owners I guess.
