Hidden Gem
Boundary Hill Lodge will forever hold a special place in our hearts. My wife and I spent 2 nights here at the beginning of our 11 day self-drive safari from Arusha to the Serengeti. Being just outside of Tarangire park, the Bradt travel guide recommended Boundary Hill for economical yet luxurious lodging. We found both to be true. The lodge has quite a dramatic location and the staff were all amazing. The view from room 1 is absolutely breathtaking with the entire valley below filling the wall of windows. There is a similar view from the restaurant as well. The staff were available for all our needs: carrying our luggage, walking us to and from our room, washing our car, even providing us with hot water for tea. Everything was taken care of for us. Jerry the lodge manager was especially accommodating. His English is excellent and we enjoyed chatting with him very much.
The lodge is fairly remote. The shortest route from Arusha passes through the rather unknown Radinel Wildlife Management Area. If you're self-driving, you'll need to request directions to the lodge and I'd recommend allowing plenty of time for this drive to ensure you are not arriving at night. We were advised it would take 2 1/2 to 3 hours from Arusha. It actually took us 4 hours due to a couple hiccups along the way. Firstly, the ranger at the gate for Radinel WMA was not aware of our arrival and no permit had been pre-arranged for us. We had to wait at that gate for about 30 minutes while he contacted the lodge and sorted out the details. Thankfully there is an amazing viewpoint there with 360 degree views. Secondly, we got stuck in a sand pit on our drive! Luckily the lodge had sent a car to look for us, and the car was following us when we got stuck. Those two men were like angels sent from God at the exact moment we needed them. They dug us out and towed us out. I don't know what we would have done without them since we hadn't seen any other vehicles on our way.
We were surprised to discover that due to covid, we were the first guests to the lodge for nine months! The staff were understandably very happy to see us and gave us the full "Be Our Guest" treatment as if we were in Disney's "Beauty and the Beast". This was especially the case while eating at the restaurant. The food of which was the best I had for our entire trip. While the attention was a little overwhelming at times, it did make us feel very special. We are hopeful that tourism will soon return to normal as we would love to see the lodge packed with happy guests.
Our room was very large with a huge wall of windows to enjoy the dramatic scenery below. The rooms are designed for natural cooling. This is achieved with screened openings above the windows. While I'm sure this is great for most of the year, having arrived at night in the winter season, we were greeted with a chilly wind cutting through our room. Jerry assured us the wind dies down each night and it did. We requested an extra blanket for the bed and with that found the room to be quite comfortable.
A couple things could be improved at the lodge. While the lights in our room were available 24/7, we were told the power outlets in the rooms do not work. Perhaps this will be fixed in the future. The staff were happy to charge our devices for us during the day, but because they rely on solar power we were at the mercy of the sun. Also, there is no WiFi. We were encouraged to unplug and enjoy nature. Which is great, but being independent travelers we rely heavily on being connected in order to communicate with hotels, arrange taxis, etc. Luckily, we were able to get a cellular signal from our room, however not from the restaurant.
If self-driving, be aware that you cannot purchase a permit for Tarangire at the nearby Boundary Hill Gate. Upon entering the park there, we were told to drive an hour to the airstrip to purchase our permit. Driving to the airstrip and back ate up our entire afternoon game drive. We did encounter a large herd of elephants along the way which was amazing as they encircled the vehicle on their way across the road to the lake. Also be aware these permits are single entry only. When driving through the park the next day we had to purchase a new permit, this time at the main gate as we exited the park.
The highlight of our trip was our visit to a Maasai village. Having learned that there were many Maasai living in the area, we asked Jerry if a visit could be arranged. He assured us there is a nearby village that is accustomed to welcoming tourists and arranged for our visit. When we arrived, the entire village greeted us with a welcoming song and dance. This was the experience of a lifetime. We were overwhelmed with joy by their song, smiles, and beautiful culture. After dancing among them, we we were invited into a house to ask questions by way of Jerry as translator. Having the opportunity for such an intimate conversation was amazing. They told us about daily life, family and cultural customs, celebrations, their houses, dress, and songs, all of which are rooted in traditional roles and respect for each other, especially their elders. Our final question was what they’d like us to share with those back in the US. The tribal elder told us for much of his life he had only seen white people in pictures. Likewise, most white people have only seen Maasai in pictures. He hopes more will come to visit them, to be welcomed as friends and to learn about their culture.
A place not to be missed
We had a wonderful stay in BHL during our recent visit to Tarangire National Park. Huge rooms, exotic feeling, comfortable beds and unbeatable view everywhere you lay your eyes at. Jerry and the team are genuinely friendly. With the 10 mins of our arrival at the lodge we feel like we are visiting old friends/ family of ours. We slept with the sounds of the animals around us and woke up with the sunrise, birds chirping and even elephants trumpet. The night drive program they run is truly magical as well. We saw tons of actions around the WMA area. Hope we’ll be able to make it back there soon again.
Wonderful place!
The lodge is very remote, placed on a hill. We were quite tired when we finally got there, but then you walk into the room and stand in front of this view. Just amazing! You see animals roaming around in the plain below. I got up at sunrise to see the plain come to life and everything being basked in pink and purple light. Would have loved to stay there longer than one night. The rooms are in good shape but it's not a luxury property. The food was great, too! Inspired by local kitchen and cooked very well. Still remembering that soup! Staff are very friendly and helpful.
If you love to be in a stunning place without expecting a 5 star lodge, this is the place to go! Simple and gorgeous!
Luckiest Gal Alive ...
My first two nights in Tanzania were at Boundary Hill Lodge. I was completely blown away by the lodge and felt so incredibly lucky to stay there. The setting is spectacular overlooking the grasslands of Tarangire National Park. Eight rooms, each with a huge private balcony, are arranged so that none are visible to the others. I slept so well and woke to glorious birdsong that got progressively louder as the sun came up. The room was spacious and sparsely elegant with a full bath downstairs – hard to imagine a better view from a loo. We had two days of amazing wildlife drives from the lodge seeing more animals than I hoped for the whole trip. The vista was iconic with elephants resting under umbrella acacia. The lodge was a welcome retreat after a long day. The common area where meals are served has wonderful patios and views. One afternoon we watched a herd of Cape Buffalo moving through the valley below us. The staff took wonderful care of us, the food was very good and the South African wines excellent. The lodge is designed to be at one with its environment both architecturally and functionally. It relies on solar panels for electricity and water is not abundant. Travelers looking for spas, saunas and heated pools may be disappointed and I wouldn’t recommend it for those with mobility issues (bathroom is downstairs). For me, it was perfect. I have been to some fabulous places in my 65 years and Boundary Hill Lodge is tied for first with Big Sur’s Post Ranch.

Beautiful, simple lodge and location
My family (parents, wife, 2 sons 11 and 12yrs) recently spent one night at Boundary Hill Lodge. The only complaint we have is that it wasn't enough time. This is a wonderful, low impact lodge that ends up providing a big impact on guest well being. The rooms are spacious and elegant, the staff is friendly and helpful, the food is great, and the location is spectacular. Another plus is that, being just outside the Tarangire park boundary in a Wildlife Management Area, it is possible to do night game drives and morning/evening walking safaris. Our drive back to the main road took us through the WMA, which was almost as full of animals as the park.
Stunning Location and excellent Staff
A truly magical place perched on Cliffs on the edge of tarangire National Park. The views from the room, even the toilet, and from the restaurant area are stunning. The staff, led by the very capable manager Jeremiah, could not have been more helpful or friendly. Whilst we were there we undertook a couple of guided walks in the conservation area bordering the park, and I would highly recommend this as it is a change from sitting in a vehicle all day. We also went on a night drive, with lights used to spot wildlife, where we saw a very good range of nocturnal animals. The place was very comfortable but I loved it’s wild feel.
This place definitely has a wow factor and would be very good for a special occasion.
Remote, Stark and breathtaking beauty.
Boundary Hill lodge was a stunning example of integrating into the environment and not overpowering it. My family was overwhelmed but the views and rugged beauty.
When we arrived and got out of our dusty truck were welcomed by the entire staff and offered warm towels and drinks. I don't know how to explain the rooms. They were everything you would want them to be.
If you go and I highly recommend you do make sure to go for the nature walk. Zebras and Giraffe stroll with you!
Food is good and a very capable artist is on the staff.

Amazing Place and People!
We spent two nights at Boundary Hill Lodge while visiting Tarangire National Park. This place is so beautiful and magical. The views are spectacular as the lodge is built on a bluff overlooking the region -- each room is uniquely designed around the bluff and includes a deck where the sunrise and the night sky are yours to see. We instantly loved the staff who took great care of us. The food was delicious and we dined in a beautiful place each morning and evening. I highly recommend Boundary Hill Lodge to you.

Magic Spot
Our family group stayed at BHL for 3 nights while visiting Tarangire National Park. Jerry and his team made us feel welcome and nothing was too much trouble. The setting is amazing and we were able to watch elephants and giraffe from the dining room while eating our breakfast. All the rooms are private, have wonderful views and each of them is unique. This is a magic place to come to and experience the African bush.
A perfect place
I was overwhelmed. Such a beautiful space on a little hill overlooking Tarangire National Park. The house we stayed in had a full frontal panoramic window, as had the bathroom. You could see giraffes walking the savannah from your room. At night, you hear the hyenas. It‘s magical, really. We had diner by the open fire, three courses. We‘re vegetarians and weren‘t sure if that‘s a problem, but the diner was literally SO good! The whole staff was super nice and we felt so comfortable there. It‘s quiet, peaceful, you become part of nature. Altogether all I asked for and more.
Loved this Place!
This was the last lodge we stayed in on our 14 day safari. They saved the best for last!
Such a unique, beautiful place and definitely off the beaten path. The view was stunning with the wall of glass. I went to sleep staring at the starry sky and awoke to a beautiful sunrise. The food was excellent and the staff was friendly. Loved this place!
Stunning View
We stayed at Boundary Hill Lodge our last night of a 14 day Safari. It was definitely our favorite. The view from our room, balcony, & bathroom was amazing. Watching the sunrise while showering was a first for me. The food & service were excellent. The night drive was so exciting. The driver took us off road. He followed animals & kept the light on them until they took off. We saw so many fascinating critters. Each room has privacy & a magnificent view of the valley & mountains. Very romantic.

Fantastic views!
The views into the conservation area! The sunrise! The floor-to-ceiling windows! The property is in so much harmony with nature! What's not to love? Jerry and his crew made us feel very welcome which made for a very pleasant stay. We enjoyed the sunrise and sunset walks that the staff took us on.

Exclusive and special lodge
We are a Danish family of 4 adult persons. We stayed one night at Boundary Lodge in connection with a safaritrip. The lodge is located on the top of a montain and has a fantastic architecture. Through the big panaromawindows in our room and even from our washroom , we had a great view over the conservation area. . There was an outdoor shower and bathtub, so you could really feel connected with nature. The staff was extremely friendly, and the food was really good. The next morning, the staff escorted us, as we had a walk outside the lodge. We saw animal traces of leopards and buffalos. The lodge is only a short drive from Tanrangire national park, where we spent the next day watching the elefants. .
The views were out of this World.
We stayed in room 1 at Boundary Hill Lodge for 1 night during our 6-day safari. The views from the dining area, the rooms and even our toilet were absolutely out of this world; we woke up to animals over the savanna below. I'm pretty sure I could hear hyenas laughing in the morning, however, my husband begged to differ. The privacy is different to everywhere else we stayed, as we walked to the room with our Masai guide we didn't see any other room.
Love how the rooms are built into the rock with hyrax running around. As you drive away and look back you can see the separate bungalows spread out across the rock formation.
Thanks to the lovely team for hosting us and creating a memorable experience, Boundary Hill is a very unique lodge and nothing like we have ever stayed at before and absolutely loved it.
Avoid!
We visited with family. It is very out of the way. There is hot water in the shower but it’s an outdoor shower only. The hot water turning on is not intuitive. There were rooms with toilet outside the room. No curtains in the room. Great views! Staff is wonderful but don’t feel safe as you cannot call anyone in the night if there is a problems. Meals were great! Staff is great! Issue is location, bugs in rooms, poor configuration of rooms, not feeling safe. Avoid!
Mest unikke Lodge i Tanzania
