Enjoyed Sailor. Went on a Friday for lunch so no French toast. Enjoyed the deviled egg and the Caesar salad is refreshing, but the dressing is pretty sharp and acidic if you like a creamier version. Just fyi. Really enjoyed the burger, in my top ten in NYC. Great decor and service. Want to return and try the French toast and their dinner.
The ambiance is pretty good, but that's about it. Food was fine, that's not the issue. We went there around 4.30pm and were told to get some snacks and drinks by the bar and that we would be seated around 5pm for dinner. When 5pm came, they told us that there was a misunderstanding and we'd have to get dinner at the bar. Totally unprofessional and unexpected. Also the service is painfully slow, despite the fact that we were at the bar. Overall, I doubt I'd come here again, even though I really wanted to like this place.
I gave this place two tries because I know that even a great restaurant can have an off night, but both times I left feeling ripped off. The dishes are pretty underwhelming and very expensive for what you get. I even tried the roast chicken that the servers raved about, and all I can say is that I make a better roast chicken than that and I'm not much of a cook. Plus the space is cramped, and the second time I dined here, the woman next to me let her toddler run wild all over the place, running into people and throwing cutlery around, and no one said anything to her. The staff seemed to just be counting the minutes until their shifts were over. There are way better restaurants in the area -- on the block, even! Don't waste your time or money here.
I went for brunch on a Saturday (with a reservation) and it was wonderful. The french toast, Turkish eggs, fries, and special Negroni were all delicious! Plus the staff was kind and attentive. Since the space is small, I would try to get a reservation. I can't recommend this place enough!
Beautiful restaurant nestled in Fort Greene, it makes for a cute spot to grab a drink with friends, with a $9 house white/red (Riesling this time for white) offered. Had a welcoming and upbeat server, but the service was general slower and not rushed, 2.5hr for our meal. I was excited as the dishes sounded unique and promising but a lot of them fell short:
The egg tonnato didn’t have much flavor, the herb oil only adding a slightly grassy taste. I was excited for the hiramasa crudo, but it was bland and one note, even the mild pomelo overpowered the fish because of how little flavor. Fried anchovies were tasty and paired well with sage but the portion is so small for the price.
What went well: sea bass was very well cooked, very soft, flaky, well flavored. Was under salted but I could add that myself. The pork was also well cooked, tender, generous portion of meat that paired well with the cherry. We finished off with the burnt caramel tart, which had a good flavor although the texture was on the softer side. I don’t think the creme fraise really complemented it, but still tasty.
There were some good dishes and Sailor is a vibe, but the price point and what we received I’m not sure if I’d return for a meal.
Had brunch at Sailor and immediately understood why people are obsessed with it. The space feels warm and genuinely loved, not manufactured. We got the french toast for the table, which disappeared almost immediately and fully deserved the hype. The burger was excellent, the migas were packed with flavor, and the whole menu felt thoughtful without trying too hard. We did eventually get kicked out for a staff meeting, though to be fair they very nicely offered to let us continue at the bar.
We went for brunch and the food was very good (4.5) - we ordered the French toast and the burger and really enjoyed both. Normally, I care more about the food and don’t mind a slightly below average service, but the service was pretty poor here. The burger came out 20-25 minutes before the French toast, without any explanation. Thankfully we just shared the burger, otherwise it would have been very cold if I had waited to eat until hers arrived. Then, when a French toast plate finally came, it was served to the table next to us (who arrived / ordered at least 10 minutes after we had). The server realized it, looked shocked and didn’t say a word to us. We had finished the burger and fries before the other dish was served and nobody there acknowledged a thing. They also forgot my coffee, but brought it shortly after we asked again, so that wasn’t a big deal.
I had read about poor service here, but like I said, that doesn’t typically deter me, but I guess it’s accurate in this case.
We still had a good time / meal, in spite of the service but not sure I’d rush to go back.
Service is hit or miss (rude servers and slow to prep food) which is puzzling because it really brings down how upscale the experience could be, but oh my god the brunch is unbelievable. I live 5 minutes away and have to physically restrain myself every weekend from ordering the French toast. The burger is also fantastic but varying degrees of fantastic depending on the day. I wish sailor was more consistent in the service and food quality department, I’d certainly go a lot more often, but whatever, that French toast is worth it.
A neighborhood favorite of ours! They opened up their outdoor seating for the first time this year yesterday, so it was a pleasure to sit outside during golden hour and enjoy a delicious meal. The Negroni Sbagliato hits the spot every time, as does their Caesar and French fries… but the Swiss chard app, crudo, pork chop, and braised sea bass blew us away this time. Fantastic quality food, service, and experience (as always)!
