HIGHLY RECOMMEND for all things!
I have 2 kiddos that have done it all here! The coaches, cheer program, hockey, and figure skating programs at this facility are all amazing. Love coach Veve, coach Morgan, coach Alicia, ice Coach Stephanie,…. hockey coaches Jim, Phillip, Matt, Spike, and TJ, and the list goes on. The classes and teams we have been involved with are structured very well and it is very clear that my kiddos have progressed appropriately. This place is basically our second home with all the things we sign up for—We love our Midwest family and are so grateful for the effort and time put back in to all athletes ♥️
Side note: facilities are getting upgrades and it’s amazing!!
Honestly, I hate leaving bad reviews, but every time I leave Midwest, I find myself overall displeased with the experience. I only use the ice rink at Midwest and do not know the quality of the gym.
The staff does not do anything about parents crowding the entry to the ice. I cannot step on or off the ice without at least two parents blocking the area to film their child(ren). The entry should be left clear for skaters to enter/ exit safely, I should not have to dodge parents, there’s so much seating available!
Next, the ice. I went this afternoon for a public skate. I had the goal to practice some basic figure skating elements and wanted relatively smooth ice. I stepped onto the ice and it was so choppy. The desk staff let me know they opted to not Zamboni the ice as the tournament prior to the skate ran late. While I understand games run late, the ice was unacceptable for skating. It would not have hurt to delay the skate 10 minutes to cut the ice, everyone pays $10.00 with the expectation of fresh ice at the start of the session!
My last, smaller gripe is that the skate guards aren’t the most attentive at times. A lot of inexperienced skaters seem to not follow the flow of the rink / run into figure skaters in the center ice when they’re practicing.
The only saving grace I will say, is that one time my partner had a minor injury and the front desk staff was very compassionate and assisted them properly. The front desk staff member even called a few days later to check in
As a whole, I don’t hate Midwest, I just wish the staff would enforce safety rules and maintain the ice we pay for. It is a very bad look for the rink to not provide a safe, quality experience.
The kids had fun at open gym. But word of advice to this company - don’t put a worker out there who hates kids. The guy overseeing the open gym was making up a new rule every 5 minutes and yelling at the kids very harshly. It’s hard for them to understand new rule after new rule. Maybe add signs or arrows telling the kids were they can and can not go.
We had a birthday party; they had other gymnasts using the gym for practice and telling the (party) kids to get off the trampolines so they could train. Not super cool to pay for gym time for 6-year olds and have a coach and gymnast tell them to get off the trampoline during the party so they could practice.
