I have driven probably a hundred times on the M1 road, reportedly the busiest highway in Johannesburg, and would from time to time, and when the opportunity allowed, take a quick glimpse at the heavily-treed golf course alongside. It is only now after a Fathers' Day lunch visit that I have been able to enjoy this splendid and iconic recreational venue. This location just off the busy M1 also makes the Killarney Country Club easily accessible via the Glenhove off ramp. At the Club's 1903 Terrace Restaurant, we were warmly welcomed by our waitron, Gracious. We were treated to a sumptuous buffet lunch with the main dish being lamb on the spit, grilled chicken, balanced with a mix of vegetables, potato bake, spicy rice and Greek salad. The lamb was deliciously succulent, with hints of crispness from the braai. The grilled chicken, too, was very good, and even the pieces of breast were tender. There was live music to entertain us all the while. We closed the meal off with a desert of hot malva pudding topped with a steaming helping of custard, followed by a welcome cup of tea. We enjoyed very good value for money, in a beautiful setting. Looking out over the 8th hole putting green, there was so much of the golf course and its beauty to enjoy, from the golfers to the dams, as well as the variety of birds on and around the dams.
