I am writing regarding incorrect information I was given by the butcher at Summerhill Butchers when I raised concerns about halal meat and animal welfare.
I was specifically told that all halal meat in the UK is stunned before the animal’s throat is cut and that it would be illegal otherwise. Having since researched the matter properly, I now understand this is not true due to the legal religious exemption in place within the UK.
I find this extremely disappointing. A butcher, of all people, should know both the source of the meat they are selling and the legal requirements surrounding slaughter methods. Customers rely on your knowledge and expertise to make informed choices, particularly on sensitive animal welfare issues.
Whether this was ignorance or misinformation, it is unacceptable to provide customers with factually incorrect information on such an important subject. I would strongly suggest staff ensure they fully understand the regulations and sourcing of the products they are selling going forward.
Seriously not impressed especially for the price. I bought their last rack of lamb ribs today because they had no cutlets, cutting the rack down I could smell it was on the turn and cooking proved it. £24 in the bin.
Recently purchased a fantastic bit of Sirloin Beef from Gibsons Finest Meats, just off the A127 Basildon. Not my first purchase but equally as impressive - butcher is great and the produce is fresh and reasonably priced. Would recommend !

Great meat and pies are brilliant but if there is any scotch eggs left after I've been you're in for a treat they're the best
These guys before they closed and moved was superb. They have relocated to Summerhill. Passed by a few weeks ago. Witnessed people leaving the queue including ourselves. Service was slow and people jumping the queue. Such a shame as quality is superb but needs to sort out its customer service.
Without a doubt the highest quality and choice of butcher products. Have been a customer years, they never disappoint. Great staff too.
Bought 2 12.5oz ribeye streaks there today....was without a doubt the best meat I've ever tasted, wasn't cheap but you get what you pay for and it was the highest quality steak I've have ever eaten and I wont be shopping anywhere else now!
