My experience here has been terrible. I had a retainer fixed here, and it broke shortly after. No big deal, that’s fine. When I went back in they prepped me before the appointment to say it was a temporary fix. Also okay. A little annoying, but I do expect that they want money.
The biggest issue is that they have zero respect for their clients and their time. There were massive wait times for scheduled appointments both times, they did not take good notes, or keep my records. I ended up leaving and asking for a refund as it seemed the ortho wasn’t going to show up.
What is the point of having scheduled appointments if a person waits in the lobby for 50 minutes after scheduled time? Then wait times in the room after that on the first appointment.
If it takes hours of wait to get into a scheduled appointment, there is an issue. I know in medical you can get away with it, but I don’t accept the result.

Shady practices. They told me they accepted my insurance over the phone (I have very good insurance with full coverage). When I arrived for my appointment on a Friday afternoon, they told me they had been unable to verify my insurance, and asked me to pay $596 out of pocket. I asked why they hadn’t called to inform me ahead of time: They told me they had recorded my phone number incorrectly. I gave them my correct phone number and asked if I could reschedule an appointment for a later date, after they had verified my insurance. They took scans of my ID and insurance card, and rescheduled me for the following Sunday. They said they would run my insurance immediately and call me if there were any problems. They never called me, but I did receive a confirmation text for my appointment on Sunday. I arrived to my appointment on Sunday only to be told that they had never actually ran my insurance, and now they would be unable to because it was a weekend. Again they asked me to pay $596 with the promise to reimburse me “after they got the insurance breakdown.” At this point I had traveled 45 minutes both ways twice. I think they were banking on the fact that I would rather pay out-of-pocket than be inconvenienced again. I left and do not plan to return.
As an aside, while I was there, I observed several other patients checking in at the front desk and appearing surprised by their co-pay amounts. Based on that, and other reviews, this seems like common practice for them. I would avoid!!
I am writing this review to notify future patients about Dr. Elizabeth Park. I was advised to get a crown for a small cavity. I sought a second opinion, and another dentist said a simple filling was sufficient, and a crown would be unnecessary and damaging. Otherwise, I had an excellent experience with wait time, my dental cleaning, and the other staff members.
Expert Dental Tribeca – I Never Write Reviews, But This Experience Deserves One
I am not the type of person who writes reviews, but my experience at Expert Dental in Tribeca today was so shocking and disappointing that I felt the need to share it.
Two weeks ago, I went in for my very first visit after listing Expert Dental as my primary provider with my insurance and receiving a reference number to confirm it. When I walked in, I was honestly amazed. The office is beautiful it really looks and feels like the Four Seasons of dental offices.
During that first visit, after taking X-rays, Dr. Choi told me I possibly needed four root canals. I was then walked over to someone who created a treatment plan, and I was told I needed $11,500 worth of dental work. Of course, I was shocked and emotional that’s a lot of money, and I simply don’t have that. The woman helping me tried to comfort me and told me to come back the following week to meet with the endodontist to confirm whether root canals were truly needed.
So I did exactly that.
My follow-up appointment was on Monday, November 24. The endodontist examined me for less than 10 minutes and told me my teeth were fine, and that I only needed regular fillings — no root canals at all. I left happy and relieved. The front desk scheduled me for my fillings to start on December 3rd and told me the doctor would work on three fillings that day.
Fast forward to today, December 3rd — and the entire experience was HORRIBLE from start to finish.
It began with the front desk asking me again if I added Expert Dental as my primary. This was the third time I’d been asked. Luckily, I had the information saved. Then suddenly, I was told I had a $4,000 co-pay. Excuse me? My insurance covers fillings. This was never mentioned to me before.
I was asked to sit down. A different woman called me in and told me the doctor was now recommending a crown and an “onlay” which is why I supposedly had a co-pay. I told her that last week the endodontist said I only needed fillings. None of this was explained to me before, so of course I was confused.
They brought me to a room to speak with Dr. Choi.
And that’s when everything truly went downhill.
Dr. Choi was rude, impatient, and dismissive from the moment she walked in. She acted bothered that I was asking questions — questions I had every right to ask, especially since the endodontist spent less than 10 minutes with me and told me something completely different the week prior.
At one point, she even looked at her watch and tried to claim we had been talking for 20 minutes, saying, “It’s 9:20 now.” That was an outright lie. I was brought into the room at 9:10, and she came in minutes later. We had barely been talking for 5 minutes when she said that.
I felt completely disrespected, dismissed, and honestly discriminated against, simply for wanting to understand what was going on with my own mouth. Everyone learns differently, and any professional especially a dentist — should have patience, empathy, and the ability to explain treatment clearly.
Dr. Choi displayed none of that. She acted like someone who had a rough night, didn’t want to be at work, and had no patience whatsoever.
At that point, I decided to leave and take my business elsewhere.
For such a “fancy” dental office, you would expect to be treated with care and respect but that was absolutely not my experience. The office may look like luxury, but the treatment I received today was anything but.
I will not be returning, and I hope sharing my experience helps others make an informed decision.
Dearest Dental Reader (and yes, that’s a Bridgerton pun),
I suspect, dare I say, unethical billing practices. A shame, as the staff is so nice.
I have one piece of advice: if you come here and find yourself staring at a blue and white paper detailing hundreds or thousands of dollars worth of dental work: get a second opinion.
You’ll pay far less for a second opinion than you will for what they might prescribe. There’s a reason you sign those sheets: you may not need all that work.
In my case, I ended up paying a lot of money (and eventually getting 3 root canals) before running my procedures by two other dentists, one in the city and one out of state, who I’d seen before. I paid for those visits because I was curious; both said they would not have prescribed me the original procedures. In the end, it’s your own decision, and I own mine. But a little extra time could have saved me several thousand dollars.
After that, however, and for minor operations: the office is pretty, front desk staff are nice, and the endodontist is excellent.
But again: get that second opinion. Don’t be like me, who nearly cried in the waiting room but eventually signed myself up for a lot of debt.
I’ve been seeing Dr. Ma and Theresa for my annual dental visits, and every single time, they remind me why I trust this office so much. Theresa gives the most gentle, thorough cleanings — I always leave with teeth that feel sparkling and fresh. Dr. Ma is incredibly thoughtful, taking time to explain everything clearly and giving helpful, personalized advice on how to care for my teeth and what to watch for to keep them healthy for life.
The administrative staff is just as wonderful — always friendly, welcoming, and genuinely helpful with scheduling and questions.
Make certain if you are in an emergency dental situation you do not go here! I wish I had read the reviews more thoroughly, but I was in pain. I was offered an emergency root canal that would have totaled $6,000. I started down this road only to get a second opinion a week into the process and learn that my tooth was so damaged that an extraction was the only option. Expert Dental only refunded me a portion of the procedure even though I had to start over. It’s a profit driven place with predatory practices! Do not go here!!!
This is a detailed review for anyone with a DMO plan considering Expert Dental. I wish someone had written this before I went, because it would have prepared me for what to expect. I went to the Tribeca location.
Summary:
- Do they take DMO? Yes but you must list them as your Primary Care Dentist (PCD) with your insurance before your visit.
- Should you go here for a basic cleaning? It gets the job done, but it felt rushed. If you have PPO insurance, I’d go somewhere else.
- Should you do major dental work here? With my personal experience, I would recommend getting a second opinion before agreeing to anything expensive or urgent.
- Is it “factory-like”? That description in another review matched my experience. The office is stylish but felt fast-paced and busy.
Detailed:
- What’s the difference between DMO and PPO offices? With traditional PPO insurance, insurance companies often scrutinize and sometimes deny procedures they see as unnecessary, because they’re the ones paying. With my DMO plan, coverage was more limited, which meant a lot of the proposed treatment would have been my responsibility. Because of that, I felt like I had to be my own bill auditor: reading every line of the treatment plan, asking what each code meant, and double-checking whether it was really needed. Based on my experience, I would strongly encourage other DMO patients here to carefully study and question any large treatment plan before agreeing.
- How do you get just a general cleaning covered? I I have a DMO plan, which has been difficult to use because few dentists accept it. Expert Dental does accept DMOs, but make sure: 1) You call your insurance before your visit to designate them as your PCD. 2) You call the office to confirm your appointment (ZocDoc times may not match their real availability). Otherwise, you may end up with unexpected charges.
- How is the cleaning or hygienist visit? The hygienist was polite but the cleaning felt very quick at around 20 minutes. They did not floss at the end, which most offices normally do. It was fine overall, but not the most thorough cleaning I’ve had.
- Do you have a more complicated dental need? This is where I think people should be more cautious. DMO plans usually have very limited coverage for major procedures. This means patients often pay out-of-pocket, so you really need to understand the costs and recommendations.
- I received two different treatment plans in the same visit, with significant price differences. One plan included a $500 CBCT scan, even though I had only had a regular X-ray. They also recommended a root canal retreatment and a porcelain crown, which surprised me because previous dentists had not expressed the same level of urgency. When I looked through the treatment plan, I noticed some areas where ADA codes were missing, which made it unclear what certain charges corresponded to.
- I’m not a dentist, but from what I researched afterward, several recommended items are known to be higher-cost procedures in general dental practice. This made me want to slow down and get a second opinion, which I highly recommend other patients do if they’re presented with a large plan on the first visit.
- The office has treatment coordinators whose job is to go over costs and financing right after you see the dentist. This is normal in many dental offices, but it did feel more sales-oriented than I expected.
- If you’re told you need major dental work:
- Take pictures of the treatment plan and X-rays.
- Get a second opinion esp if it’s your first visit or it feels urgent.
- Ask for ADA codes for every line item.
- Take your time — you can always schedule later.
- This can easily save you thousands of dollars.
Hope this transparency and honesty helps.
