Great value, outstanding service
We purchased a grab one deal for 3 nights at this hotel and couldn't have been more impressed. The room on the second floor was enormous, with two queen beds, an armchair, dining table and chairs, bench with sink and a separate nook for suitcases. The bathroom was a little dated but again was large and roomy, with a double vanity and a surprisingly good shower. There was also a huge triangular bath in a separate room overlooking the racecourse, alongside a generous balcony with a table and chairs. Everything was spotlessly clean. We ate from the hotel restaurant room service menu twice during our stay and the food was excellent. Breakfasts were also great with a good variety of hot and cold options. What really made our stay though was that every staff member we interacted with, from reception, to food service to cleaning staff were outstandingly pleasant and helpful - even down to packaging up some belongings we forgot and advising us how to arrange for a courier to collect them! This was exceptional value as a deal but we wouldn't hesitate to stay again in the future, even without a deal.
Perfect stay.
Wow. This place was amazing. We could walk to the shopping area and lake. Close drive to the Redwoods. The room was perfect, huge, warm and sunny with a lovely spa bath. The staff friendly, the food delicious, beautiful atmosphere. View out over race cause was great to watch horses training and people walking their dogs. Would definitely stay again.
Great stay
I stayed as a lone female on a grab one deal for a bit of mid week rest and recoup after a difficult time. It was a lovely stay. I have stayed previously and noticed the big step up in service, rooms and restaurant from the prior owners. The room had been heated for arrival,, towels large and fluffy, staff helpful and friendly and professional. The brekkie was delicious and the bed enormous and super comfy. They also accommodated my request to arrive early and get my hot pools tickets before I checked in, so I got to spend extra time there too. Overall a big thumbs up and will be back soon.
Value For Money
We had a lovely stay and will definitely be back. The large window overlooking the racecourse and lake made the room feel so peaceful, and soaking in the bathtub while enjoying the view was the perfect way to unwind. The beds were unbelievably comfortable—it honestly felt like sleeping on a fluffy white cloud. The room service meals and breakfast were both delicious and exceeded our expectations. While the accommodation is a little dated, it was spotless, well maintained, and fantastic value for money. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will definitely be staying here again.
Stay somewhere else, there is so much choice here!
Booked directly with the hotel which is part of the Rydges chain. There are a large number of motels and hotels in Rotorua so the pricing is fairly competitive, especially in winter, and this one had reasonable reviews. It is on the road that leads out of town to the main geyser area which was handy as I had booked a tour for the day after I arrived for my two night stay. The hotel is a large 4 storey block possibly built in the 70s or 80s as it is quite dated. There is a central atrium stretching up to the 4th floor so the communal areas are quite light and bright but this also makes the acoustics shocking. My room was on the 4th floor and was very spacious, but like the rest of the hotel, very dated. There was a small white wardrobe, and a table with 4 chairs, all quite worn. There was a fridge and kitchen sink but no utensils were provided other than cups and glasses. I could have asked for some but didn’t bother as I am only staying two nights. The WiFi was poor and went down completely over night on my first night and was not restored for several hours. As the TV needs the WiFi in order to function this was doubly annoying. My room had two kings size beds. The bathroom had a shower over a small bath, with a burgundy plastic sink and sink surround, again quite worn. But the water strength was the best thing about this room, the cracked tiles gave cause for concern. The room had a large radiator but also an air-con/heater unit which did not appear to be working although the radiator kept the room warm enough. There were handy plug sockets next to the bed. There was an iron, kettle and hairdryer but no safe. There were large signs in the car park warning people not to leave valuables in the cars, this did not inspire confidence! The biggest issue for me was noise. The rooms were not soundproofed, I could hear every word of conversations between other hotel guests as they made their way from the lift to their rooms and they were quite noisy. Unfortunately one of the very noisy families with young children were staying in the room next to mine and again I could hear every word of their conversation. The sound of doors opening and closing noisily continued throughout the night so I hardly slept on the first night I was there which was a Saturday night. Sunday night was quieter but not by much. I am sure there are better hotels in Rotorua for a similar price and would not stay here again.
1 night stay, enjoyed
Loved my stay. Stayed here for 1 night. Nice cheap price. Paid $35 for 1 night of parking which is alright for central auckland. Checked in and got told we were getting a free upgrade which was awesome. On floor 14 with amazing views of the sky tower. On check out they let us leave our car in the parking for an extra 2 hours as well which was awesome. Nice room, lovely staff. Overall a great stay will definitely be back.
Is this the best of Picton?
Sadly, it appears that the hotel choice in Picton is very limited and to be honest maybe the Edit Picton was the best of the lot. This was one of the first hotels we stayed at on our dream of a lifetime trip to South Island, New Zealand. We arrived to find that our two rooms (requested beforehand) were not close, we were told that breakfast was not included, and in general, the staff seemed too busy, not welcoming or helpful.
Fawlty Towers in Hanmer
Tried to book a table online here for a meal. That proved impossible so phoned them and after correcting the person that answered the phone six times re my name and the time I wanted to book ( he got it wrong 3 times) I should have been warned about what was to come. It took one and a half hours for our very odd meals to arrive!!! We got the impression that the food was being cooked off site and somehow couriered in. The person waiting our table didn’t know what the specials were or even what a Pinot Gris or a Sauvignon Blanc was. We should have left after an hour but the whole experience had become so Fawlty Towers that we stuck it out waiting for the next disaster.

Grand Lovely Hotel
Firstly, this is an historic hotel, it's not brand new modern.. But we thought it was lovely, our room was big, clean, comfy bed, TV, WiFi, excellent location.. We wished we could have stayed longer. I get that there is no air-conditioning and the floors squeak, but like I said "it's an historic hotel".. Want a modern hotel with all the sleek, modern, brand new etc etc , this isn't really it.. But it's not mouldy, stinky, or unpleasant at all..

Truely a wonderful and comfortable stay
We had a truly wonderful stay during our visit in March. From the moment we arrived, everything exceeded our expectations. The rooms were spotless, beautifully maintained, and incredibly comfortable, making it easy to relax and feel at home. Housekeeping did an excellent job every day, keeping everything fresh and immaculate. The staff were one of the highlights of our stay. Very warm, welcoming, and always ready to help with a smile. Every request we made was handled promptly and professionally, and it genuinely felt like they went above and beyond to ensure we had the best possible experience. The overall atmosphere of the hotel was calm, inviting, and well-organized. It was clear that great attention is paid to detail, from the cleanliness of the facilities to the level of service provided. We really appreciated how seamless and stress-free everything felt throughout our stay. We left feeling refreshed, well taken care of, and already looking forward to returning. Highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a comfortable, enjoyable, and memorable stay.

The Best Marigold Hotel
If you want the Best Marigold Hotel experience well this is the place for you. ( for those who have seen the movie you will understand) If you don’t, then don’t even consider it. Look elsewhere please. Once a very grand place, now it’s tired, and in need of so much work. It could be restored to something magnificent, with its impressive front entrance hall and restaurant. We had a big room, but that’s where the positives stop. It gave me the impression when walking the corridors, that I was in an old nursing home or hospital. An attempt has been made at some improvements, but unless someone has a truck load of money, this is a lost cause as the place is huge. I can not believe it is part of the Rydges chain! Maybe the other rooms on higher floors have been renovated, ( can’t believe some of the ratings I read here ) but for us, it was awful. Maybe there is better rooms somewhere. I gave a star for the cheerful, helpful, polite young lady at reception, and the free drinks we got as Rydges members, and the good quality bathroom products.

A very refreshing stay with view, weather and fresh air
A very nice place with very friendly staff. The villa we got (242) is fully equipped with all facilities including dish washer, washing machine & dryer, a wonderful chimney that made our stay more and more romantic and very cozy. 3 bedrooms well designed and very spacious cabinets. Huge jacuzzi too. The view was breathtaking. A wonderful golf course, alps mountains, many lakes. The walk around in the pine bush is unique. Details up safety are to be highlighted. Great stay and highly recommend all year through
