I am incredibly disappointed with my experience at this office.
I went in for what I believed would be a routine crown. About a week after the crown was placed, the tooth fractured underneath it. I returned to the office, and the crown was reattached, but the tooth fractured again the very next day. I have now been referred to an endodontist for a root canal.
Looking back, I can’t help but question whether this tooth should have been crowned in the first place. I feel that my tooth was not properly evaluated before the procedure, or that I was not fully informed about its condition and the possibility that it might require a root canal or fail shortly after treatment. If the tooth was already compromised to this extent, I believe I deserved an honest conversation before moving forward with such an expensive procedure.
To make matters worse, I was made to wait in the office for hours while I was already dealing with pain and stress. At no point did I feel that anyone showed genuine empathy or concern for what I was going through.
My experience with Dr. Bonnie Wen was also very disappointing. I felt that she was heavy-handed during my treatment, and the overall experience was far more uncomfortable than I expected. Combined with everything that happened afterward, it left me with very little confidence in the care I received.
What made the experience even worse was how my concerns were handled. Instead of showing empathy or trying to help resolve the situation, I was told that I “only paid $1,000” because insurance covered the rest. That response was incredibly dismissive. The treatment cost approximately $3,000, regardless of whether I paid part of it directly or my insurance paid the remainder. Those insurance benefits were still used on a treatment that failed.
I was also told that because I signed a consent form, there was essentially nothing I could do. That response made me feel like my concerns were being brushed aside rather than taken seriously. A consent form should not be used to dismiss a patient who is simply trying to understand why a procedure failed so soon after treatment.
I understand that complications can happen in dentistry. However, I expected honesty, accountability, compassion, and a genuine effort to make things right. Instead, I have been left with pain, the need for a root canal, additional expenses, countless hours dealing with this situation, and a great deal of frustration.
Based on my experience, I cannot recommend this practice.
There's a reason why this place has so many bad reviews. I normally don’t leave negative reviews, but after what happened to both me and my father, I feel that people deserve to know our experience.
About 15 years ago, I saw Dr. Bonnie Wen for a tooth that was not causing me any pain. After the treatment, that same tooth began hurting badly. The pain continued until I sought treatment from a different dentist, who redid the work. After that, the pain completely went away. Based on my experience, I have always believed that something was not done correctly during the original treatment. The entire experience was painful, stressful, and left me with very little confidence in the care I received.
Unfortunately, my father’s recent experience has brought back those same concerns. He had a crown placed, and about a week later the tooth fractured underneath it. He returned to the office, the crown was reattached, and the tooth fractured again the very next day. He has now been referred to an endodontist for a root canal.
As someone who went through my own experience with this office, I can’t help but question whether my father’s tooth was properly diagnosed and whether he was fully informed of its condition before the crown was placed. That is my opinion based on what happened. What upset us even more was the lack of compassion afterward. Rather than acknowledging how upsetting the situation was, we felt our concerns were dismissed.
I understand that no dentist can guarantee a perfect outcome and that complications can happen. However, after my own experience years ago and now seeing what my father has gone through, I no longer have confidence in the quality of care provided by this office.
I cannot recommend this practice based on the experiences my family has had.
I highly discourage anyone from coming to this clinic. I had a standard filling done here by Dr. Bonnie, and it has been an absolute nightmare.
For nearly a month after the procedure, I was in persistent pain and couldn’t eat properly. I returned to the clinic every single week to get help, but Dr. Bonnie dismissed my concerns. Even though I explicitly told her the pain felt deep and internal, her only solution was to repeatedly shave down the surface of the tooth. There was zero progress, and she failed to address the root cause of my pain.
I finally had to go elsewhere for a second opinion, where it was confirmed that the filling was done too deep and had caused nerve damage.
The lack of thorough diagnosis and the refusal to actually listen to a patient is unacceptable. This whole experience has been incredibly painful and frustrating. I will never return to this clinic.
The staff are unhelpful, don't use common sense and this office does not operate in way that provides the best care for their patients. I live on the mainland but have an 86 year old mother with dementia who lives on the island and needs to have a tooth removed. I was trying to coordinate getting the necessary referral, x-ray and documents needed to get my mother the care she needed after Dr.Uehara referred her Maui Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Even after explaining the criticality of our situation in which my mother has no capacity to do this by herself on the island, the staff in this office just kept putting up road blocks such as fill out this form, you can't pick up her x-rays, "admin fee"...You'll have a better time calling the IRS for help with your tax prep than dealing with these folks.
DO NOT USE DENTAL CARE OF MAUI! I had the very unfortunate experience of being a patient with these so called “professionals”. I unfortunately had to reschedule my appt for a crown twice because I contracted covid and was extremely sick. I was very sick for over a month. One reschedule was done by phone when they called the day prior to my appt. I told them that I had Covid and had to reschedule. They did so 3 weeks later. The second time I rescheduled with them was when they texted me a day prior to my appt. I texted them back stating that I still was very sick and would have to reschedule again. I received no text back with a new appt nor a phone call. Then app: 1 week later, I received a letter from the dentist informing me that they are dropping me as a patient and suggest I take my business elsewhere!! I mean, who the hell does business like this?? ,No professionalism ,understanding or a shred of empathy shown whatsoever to a patient who was extremely sick , yet still kept in communication with them regarding my situation. I guess they didn’t believe me , but I will not stand by and let a terrible practice such as this one go on and continue to conduct business like this and treat their patients this way! I NEVER DO REVIEWS… Even if I had a bad experience at restaurants , stores etc.. I just normally let that stuff go. BUT THIS??!! NO WAY!! How dare you drop me as a patient and send a humiliating letter when I kept in touch with you on both occasions about having the Covid virus and be treated like this!! Well I’m much better off now without this deplorable dental practice and have found a much much better dental provider who knows how to provide REAL empathetic, respectful understanding and courteous services to their patients during difficult times. SHAME ON YOU DENTAL CARE OF MAUI! Now I understand why your reviews and rating is mediocre at best. I wish I would have read your reviews before going to you!!
In the one interaction I had the misfortune of experiencing with this business, they were very rude. I was outside their establishment for maybe 5 minutes, when they rudely told me to leave and claimed it is private property. I understand there have been a lot of houseless people in the area lately, so all I can think of is that they are sensitive to extra people hanging about, but I am not and think it's very clear. Definitely not interested in checking this place out further.
Should have been a routine dental visit, but 8 months later I still have dental/health issues because of Dr. Bonnie Uehara.
Since my initial visit I have spent thousands of dollars in subsequent treatment because of Dr. Bonnie Uehara incompetent and negligent dental work.
This dentist is a nightmare. Unprofessional and untrustworthy. Avoid.
I am here on vacation and had an issue with a tooth. I happened to get an apt right away (cancellation) and they were amazing. Dr. Bonnie talked to me about all the concerns, pros, cons, etc. The staff was also so amazing and kind from the front staff to the dental technicians. Highly recommend!!
Worst dentist on Maui. My husband and I were loyal patients of this establishment for over 10 years. Even though neither of us were fond of the doctor, because he is rude and curt with no bedside manner, we still kept going. My husband called to reschedule an appointment and the person that answered said sure, I'll check with the doctor and call you back. Instead of a phone call we received this exact text:
Aloha,
This is Dental Care of Maui. We understand that you have a very busy schedule. Unfortunately we cannot afford to continue to care for you because we reserve appointment times specifically for you. Please seek further dental care elsewhere. We are removing your scheduled appointments. Good luck in the future.
Can you imagine being fired from your dentist because you called to reschedule an appointment!? Unprofessional and rude, honestly they did us a favor.
came in with my grandpa for an appointment he had at 10 AM, we didn’t get in a room until 11 but everyone that came in after us was being taken in before us. The dentist assistant we got spoke spanish which made my grandpa feel comfortable due to him having trouble understanding english this is why I always attend appointments with him. we waited about another 20 min before we got to see Dr. Bonnie in which she didn’t even acknowledge me or apologize for the wait , no gestures. She’s speaking to my grandpa although i’m answering questions to her and yet would barely look at me then once our dental assistant came back , Dr. Bonnie had told her she’s gonna go over what needs to be done and have her explain to us in spanish. I told her I understand and speak with no trouble in english and she could just explain it to me with no issue. She then made it seem like that wasn’t a good option and insisted on the dental assistant to explain. She looks over at the paper of my grandpa insurance and says “he has good insurance it’ll be covered go ahead and give them an estimate” then walks away. X rays and an exam were needed to be done but only one x ray was done and no exam of his mouth was even seen. She then proceed to tell me what needs to be done and when asked where we had gone previously i told her we used to go in lahaina for his dental and she then replies with “oh that stinks for you guys” and continues. No sympathy from her and just felt belittled when being talked to by her. worst dental experience not just for my grandpa but for me as well and disappointed. the best service were from the girls in the front and our dental assistant which i would like to thank for welcoming us. as for Dr. Bonnie , you stink.
